Good list Javi and you almost got to my number one coaching tip with your last point. Communication is by far the most important attribute not just in coaching but in life and not just in games but in ALL types of communication from before and after practice to conversations with the players, the parents to the referees. I’ve coached youth sports for years and I was very successful even when I didn’t have talented teams. On more than one occasion I had someone ask me how I was able to get the players to respond like I did and over achieve and I would tell them it’s because I was always consistent with my message of what WE were trying to achieve. It’s not just about on the field instructions it’s about your every day interactions with your entire team from 1 to 59 it does not matter who they are. You talk to them the same and you treat them the same even though you know you have some that are better than others. I have multiple players right now playing D1 football and even one signed on to a pro contract as a undrafted player. You ask any of them and they will tell you I was the hardest coach they ever had to deal with and yet because of my communication with them even during times that I was destroying them in training, they would tell you that they would follow me off a cliff. When you give them your word to a player, you need to follow through because if you don’t, that is the fastest way to lose not just that player but the whole team and your reputation because players talk and you will be labeled a bullshitter.

On that last point I definitely agree but I’d also say know when to relate info to players. I’ve seen coaches give full speeches to players during the heat of the game and 9 times out of 10 a player will nod and say yes but won’t even really hear you. When it comes to criticism or critiquing of players (especially younger players) keep the feedback simple but effective during the game. I usually go in with more detail during half time or when the ball is out and being recovered because there’s more time for the player(s) to really hear and understand what your saying at that point. Great work coach. More of these kinds of videos 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾

Hey coach Javi, im a new u7 coach at 22 years old. I stopped playing in my second year of u15, and the point you being closer to age of the players than other coaches really made me feel a bit better. all the coaches at my club are 35+ and so its not so easy relating to them with anything besides football. But at least i see that its not just me coaching straight out of school

parias _sky As he said in one of his older videos, just start volunteering anywhere and everywhere. You could volunteer to be a coach at your own park district or any recreational league. Then as you progress, you could start working on getting your coaching licenses. I started volunteering and I want to start getting licensed soon.

Also, something that doesn’t get suggested much...develop your own philosophy. What i mean by that is know what kind of football you believe in and learn about it and what it takes to develop that style of play. Whether it’s the English long and more direct style of play or maybe the more technical Barca style of play. Do you prefer more possession style? Counter attacking? Building out the back? Etc.. in the long run this will be beneficial as you grow as a coach and how you believe players should or can develop under you in your style.

Do you have any advice for a young coach coming in to coach a high school girls team? I’ve never coached a girls team or at this level but my boss believes I have the capabilities to succeed here.
@CoachJavi
@CoachJavi 5 жыл бұрын
Hector Urbina with girls, I’ve typically found that you have to get them to know you care about them as a person first. Think about that when you coach them and in your interactions. You have to be a little less aggressive or hard than you coach your boys because girls want to see that you care about their feelings. It depends on the team, but there is also less arguing with each other. Girls typically blame themselves after a loss and guys blame each other 😂😂 As long as you care and you show them, the coaching part will be easier.

Also i would encourage you to try to help them bond with outside activities here and there. Even just team dinners or an activity. As a Womens college coach I’ve seen clicks and groups form and hurt team chem. So be sure to emphasize that “togetherness” aspect.

Inhad horrible coaches in middle school and highschool. They didnt really care. They just started the kids who had brothers on the varsity team or some woman the know is one of their moms etc. It literally destroyed any chance i had at actually enjoying football to the fullest. It was a horrible experience. And seeing this video just validates how horrible they were. I dont even know how wait. I do know how they became coaches. Because its a small town where they grew up and everyone knows eachother but we were a new family coming into town. So we were looked at like nobodies
