It's amazing how much the "Suck for Luck" narrative shows exactly who pays attention to football and who doesn't. For years, everyone said Peyton Manning was keeping the Colts at a higher level than they really were. And when he missed 2011 everyone was shown just how right they were. It was an old team across the board with bloated contracts just waiting to be rebuilt. Despite the injuries, poor level of talent and questionable coaching they still managed to win two of their last three games and lost seven other games by 8 points or less including the last game at Jacksonville 13-19. Meanwhile, Washington was getting blown out in the last game 34-10 at 7-8 Philly. Which one was tanking? If that's all you got for the Colts, maybe it would have been easier to just say they've never been caught cheating.

You have to look at who they've lost to, how they've lost to them, and even certain close wins can be instructive. 2017 is particularly dramatic in the last regard[*]: there were four wins where they came out and played like dogshit until deep into the third quarter before rallying to get game winning field goals in the final minute, with three of them coming at the literal last second. I can almost guarantee you that trend factored into Jacksonville's game plan in January. The Jags came out with a plan and the tools to exploit that weakness, and the Steelers played right into it, which got them into a 21-0 hole after one quarter, a hole from which they could never quite dig out. There's also their first loss of the season, to the Bears. They played down so horribly to a team that's been a Dysfunction Junction for 30 years that they lost in OT. They don't get there if the special teams coaches had worked with Eli Rogers to ensure he could field that first punt cleanly, or if the normally solid field goal protection doesn't break down and give up a block that turns into a Bears field goal. If they had won, the Patriots game in December doesn't cost them the No. 1 seed and they draw the Titans, the one healthy team the entire year that drove the Steelers to play up to the preseason hype. I could go on from here, go into detail about them going 2-2 against the dumpster fire that was the 2014 AFC South, or getting swept by a Ravens team that had been hollowed out by injuries in 2015, but I think the above makes my point well enough. [*Which is a fitting turn of phrase, seeing as they're drowning in behind the scenes drama these days]

As a Bronco fan, I actually think the back paying of Elway and Davis during their 90's superbowl era is more egregious. Both took unusually low contracts (with the promise of back pay) to allow them to sign impact free agents like defensive end Neil Smith while still technically being under the salary cap.
