The reason you don't want to use dielectric grease for the contacts is because dielectric grease is an INSULATOR. You don't want to insulate the contacts, the switch may not work. Now There's Your Dinner!

Taryl Fixes All hey I’ve got a 28hp intek V twin (49M777) with electronic fuel management and it will only run on starting fluid sprayed into the air intake. I took the carb off and cleaned it once just lightly and put it back. Same problem. I took it off again and disassembled it completely, soaked the carb body for half hour in parts cleaner, cleaned all the orifices and sprayed them out with high pressure air. (Even took the bowl, tower, butterfly and nozzle off) Put everything back together, reinstalled and it ran great. Shut it off for the night and tried to start it the next day and I got the same problem again. I checked the fuel tank for debris, there are new fuel lines and filter. The fuel pump sprays fuel like hell, the carb is getting fuel and it smells like fuel when you try starting it but it cranks and tries to start just one or two little sputters but never catches. I’m thinking my electronic fuel management system is screwed. Any thoughts on what the problem may be or other troubleshooting ideas?

I have fixed these switches that have pitted surfaces, by applying some solder, using a small electronics soldering iron (Hakku), that you can buy small and narrow tips (point and spade), which you will need to dive into the rocker box.

I believe I figured out why the thumb switch contacts burn and pit. More often than not the diverter chute motor screw freezes causing the chute to not operate or the chute won't rotate because it or the motor device that runs it is iced up and frozen. Most folks keep trying to get them to operate by holding these switches down while trying to get the diverter or chute to move by switching the thumb switches back and forth. Holding the thumb switches down only serves to cause the contacts to heat up, arc and burn which causes those pits on the switch contact surfaces. If you don't have a place to keep your snow blower dry and thawed out, then you should make sure these electric motor devices and the equipment they operate are not frozen before attempting to operate the switches. Doing this will likely reduce the number of times you will have to make the repair Taryl shows in this video. He is the man and his videos are very informative and will save your $$$$. Thank you Taryl for sharing your extensive knowledge with us.

@@chrome3720 For sure, Used my wife's hair dryer quite a bit thawing the chute and diverter motor screw. Thawing will help prevent the contacts in the thumb switches from overheating and burning. Appreciate your comments.

When it's -20c , theres 2 feet of snow to clear and another storm on the way, the snowblower needs to be the most reliable machine available. My 1980's 1032 Ariens and 1977 1026 Snowflite from MTD, ........ NO CABLES TO FREEZE UP, NO FLIMSY CABLES TO SNAP, NO ELECTRIC GADGETS TO FAIL WHEN I NEED THE MACHINE TO WORK..... SIMPLY A NO FRILLS! consumers would line up outside the store(just like on Black Friday) to get their hands on a reliable machine like this. A no frills machine is the most dependable! Building machines again like this again won't hurt you, manufacturers,.... it will boost your sales!!!! Machines need to be more reliable!!!! Be prouder of your product!! And there will always be servicing to follow... I've been fixin em for over 40 yrs....seen every problem....seen em all

Thanks Taryl. I bought a Simplicity 1222ee it's a single stage with the snowshredder auger teeth built into the rubber paddles. I liked it because it has a Briggs 250cc engine, lights and electric shoot rotation. I did a lot of research before buying this unit and nobody on the snowblower forum seemed to be complaining about any of the components. Well it's only two years old and it would only rotate the shoot in one direction. It's still under warranty but it's a two to three week wait for service. So I used your advice and cleaned up the contacts and bent them to make better contact. Works great again now. However I wish I would have watched your video advice on what kind of snowblower to buy. I think I should have bought a Toro single stage. I have a classic two stage Toro 824 I bought from a neighbor and that things a tank.Thanks for this video it really helped mee a lot..

Thanks! You saved me at least $40 for a new switch. I broke off the two tabs holding the switch to the frame and one of the tabs holding the top of the switch to the bottom of the switch doing this in 7 degree weather. I recommend using a hair dryer or heat gun on the plastic before trying to pry the tabs. Super Glue works wonders fixing the broken tabs. My switch has a cover that goes between the switch and the wiring harness that helps anchor the switch to the frame with a small amount of wiggle but again Super Glue got rid of the wiggle. A bit of caution at 9:33 you will see the top of the switch in your left hand. In the middle of the top are two spring loaded copper contacts that are only held in place with the dielectric grease. They tend to fall out with vertically putting the top of the switch onto the bottom. I suggest doing it sideways to insure they don't fall out.

I have a fake john Deere 1330se and the chute, lighting and wiring in general has given me issue since the get go. The lights worked for a bit -the hand warmers would litterally melt my gloves so I disconnected all except the chute. I got a voltage regulator new lights as the originals were literally melted. I no sooner change the VR and installed new lights -they burnt out - I quickly disconnected before the lights melted - i paid enough for the piece of crap could not justify have the JD fixer pick up and repair - not worth it - i have had chute problems and i cut the wires and reconnected and it worked - now the damned up/down is gone again - on this site today to see what i can do - will check the wires i cut and if fine will look at the switch - as long as it blows/throws snow i will keep using but am looking at a Honda - your video had me laughing uncontrollably at the end - will definitely look you up again - thanks for the advice

If you sprinkle a little baking side on top of your superglue after gluing a layup, it will dry instantly and rock hard. Works great for little plastic clips. I have heard that it is also an approved method of fixing minor chips and dings in helicopter rotor blades. If it is used for that repair, I know it will work for any of my stuff!

Should be sure not to try to depress the locking tabs on these switches when the temperature is below zero or you may find that the locking tabs snap off. Been doing what Taryl is showing here often and this does work well. Be careful not to lose the springs inside the switch when you separate it for cleaning. What a great video and I've been a huge fan of this fellow's for a few years now. He will save you many bucks. Yes the lights will burn out on a regular basis too. The only reliable thing on this model is the engine but you may need a carburetor or a charging module from time to time.

New Snowblower must have bridge rectifier to run the motors and allow DC bulbs to be used. 15 years ago I mounted an old battery powered 3/8 electric drill on the end of the chute crank and wired it to a DPDT switch. Battery from the Lawn Tractor powers it thru a Season. Sure beats crankin. Rotating blue light on top of the 3 sided canopy. Excellent. 1990's White (MTD) 10.5 HP, 30".

I used this video before and it was very helpful. I think this has to be done approximately once per season. Gets kinda old. I had ordered replacement switches from Simplicity. They wiring harness configuration is different, so they come with a wiring harness adapter. Today, I was set to do this process again, but since I had a couple of the new switches already, I decided to try one of them. It works great, only took a minute to replace with the wiring adapter harness. The profile and feel is different, which makes me wonder (hope) they learned the original design was problematic and came up with something better. Time will tell...

@jhitt79
@jhitt79 7 жыл бұрын
johno2355 with all do respect, it's not a theory, it's fact. Dielectric grease is an insulator and not conducive. If you have a good multimeter, set it to ohms, stick your leads on your fingers. Get resistance? Conductive. Stick them in water. Conductive? Metal, wood, the air etc. See for yourself, if no reading on the meter then it's infinite resistance, or an open circuit. Now put your two leads in a glob of dielectric grease and tell me what you get on your meter. Don't touch the leads together, just stick them in the grease to see if it's any more conducive then air. The grease is to keep crap out of the connection so it's not a bad thing it's just that many people don't understand the purpose and think it somehow makes less resistance in a circuit. The problem with the switch in the video is caused from the crappy metal, it's pitted from arcing.

Hi Taryl, Great video, I have done this several times since I found what them overpriced replacement switches cost. Those little locks that hold them onto the machine are very vulnerable to breaking when they are cold. 18 bucks for that 20 watt bulb. Got to be careful that you don't lose them little springs when dissembling the switches. I found cutting down an emery board that folks use to file their nails with works well for cleaning the contacts of the switch. It would be nice to find a reasonable priced replacement switch that would run both the rotation and diverter on the chute.

No one ever knows everything about anything no matter how much years of experience they have yet Raymond told me that I should look for something else to do beyond repairing power tools & he had about 44 years of experience in the trade when he told me. Even after doing a full course in anything at school ,college or anywhere,you only ever use about 10% of the education on the job & the rest is experiential. When I overfilled my dads Honda HRU217D lawnmower with oil,it kept burning oil then one day just decided to stop burning it as it was burning oil even after I drained the oil out to the full level. There was nothing Honda could tell me other than perhaps worn or damaged piston rings & even someone with many years of experience with Hondas said online. I just left it alone & it stopped burning oil,I just gave it a 6 monthly oil change & valve tappet adjustment today with no problems. I think the crankcase ventilation system still has oil in it or it may have still been a tad overfilled with oil. That dude at the front counter with the diploma is much like my brother Scott !!!!

I'd go with a partially or completely broken key way off the flywheel. Just enough to throw the timing out of sync. I've seen some keys half broken. I'm not certified but, I've been tinkering around small engines since late 60's. From REO Royal to Iron Horse and those "crank starter" were scary if you didn't turn the crank all the way. Those lock pins rubbing on the flywheel was enough to pee a little. I still hate those old electric ones with that extension cord taped here, here and there....And more tape there..... You know what happened ! Unless you're too young to know. Keep the good work guys.

I see several comments asking about dielectric grease on the "contact" of the switch. Listen folks, dielectric grease is an INSULATOR!!!! It's designed to insulate electrical connections and lube seals like o-rings or rubber boots. If you put it on a metal to metal connection and it worked for you, it's because the grease was essentially "scraped off" when the connection was made allowing the metal to metal contact. The grease that was "scraped off" has now been displaced and hopefully doing its job as an insulator from the air (oxidation.)

I wonder if a drop of WD40 applied on the contacts (with the tip of a toothpick) would protect from pitting. I didn't use WD40 when I cleaned my switch contacts. What do you think?
@jhitt79
@jhitt79 6 жыл бұрын
chrisradano I have no idea on that one, because I don't know if WD-40 conducts electricity. I think just keeping the contacts clean would be the best bet. Any grease/oil that you'd put in there has the potential to collect crud.

WD40 does conduct electricity. I still won't use it on my switch contact, just because I don't want to use it on something that small and sensitive. Just wondering if there's any way to protect the contacts, I guess not. My chute switch didn't work properly from day 1, so it wasn't from dirt. Not much dirt in fresh snow, either. I'll probably take the switch apart every season to clean the contacts now. Thank for your reply!

chrisradano I'm not an expert, but I tend to believe the problem is mainly from poor materials in the constitution of the switch.

I got the snapper version another thing that sucks is the design of where the shoot rotates left and right where the black plastic cover is for the chute it always gets frozen have to take black plastic cover off and use a heat gun on it everytime

Is there an easy way to ajust the RPM on the these B&S engines The RPM seems to run very high after a few years of use.

edgenet1 try taking a little strain off the governor spring, if it has one. I've never worked on snow blowers as we don't have them here but have adjusted many mower engines. Go easy, they're very sensitive.

The "geniuses" at JD cease to amaze me. They have to go "high tech" where a MECHANICAL set-up would OUTLAST the machine. My 40+ yr old Honda HS 55 has MECHANICAL chute controls that are STILL working properly! Progress..........ain't it wonderful?

In the beginning he asked about a small engine question. Here the answer. Its a balance problem. One scenario is broken blade adapter, blade slipping, cracked flywheel, etc. Unless you have a steel flywheel you need the blade to help inertia .

I always use on my 12 volt connector applications bulbs ect. I feel, once a good metal contact, it seal out the moisture and road salt. Once I repaired a trailer wire harness connection and turn signal started working just fine. The lady was so happy, she called blinker fluid. LOL

Walter Holbury yes, it's a seal for air, water, salt, etc. but it isn't conducive itself.
