Fixing broken tie rods.

Fixing broken tie rods on an international feed truck in a real bad spot. Also the D8k transmission pump is being shipped from back east and should be here Friday.

On a side note, fun video, watching somebody else work on heavy equipment in the rough conditions, instead of me, I miss this work, and frankly, really did enjoy the never ending challenges, but damn, did it make me into an old man fast, and I am only 45, and ever joint in my body hurts these days, especially my hands and hip joints and worst of all, my knees... Please note, all is self inflicted, based on the facts that I never just paced myself ,and had to be full throttle all the time so I could get on the next one, money, money, money, money...... Lol. I really don't think I would have lost that much money if I had just calmed down and stayed on a steady pace. It likely, would have been less then $5000 a year difference, neck ,i t may have been $0.00 difference, as it isn't like the the broken down units were going anywhere until I get there, lol... To late now, damage done, folks pace yourself, so you can do this brand of heavy and heavier work, for a life time ,instead of just 15 years.. If your body starts to hurt, slow down, and stop pushing through the pain, with in reason. Plus, when you hurt, it makes things not as fun as the kind is having to share some of its power to handle the pain management aspect of things... This is my public service announcement PSA, for the day..

Dang man, it's always the cheapest parts you can replace on a work rig that cause the biggest headache. A bit of maintenance goes a long long way as well! I always take a bit of anti seize on those threaded ends for tie rods. Makes life ten times easier the next time! Can definitely tell zero maintenance is done on that trucks undercarriage. Those greased ends last a good long time when all greased proper!

Releasing threads-It may sound stupid, but it works, i saw someone on KZbin testing it out, on rusted wheel nuts. It is the candle trick; you obviously clean the visible threads up. You can use a hand held gas torch, heat the area, it does not have to be red hot, when the surface becomes hot enough, the candle will melt, and the capillary action takes the wax into the thread. It is likely you will use it a lot. If you know someone that makes candles, get some without wicks in.

As usual, beautiful scenery and great work! We used to have a Ursus tractor. One time when dad parked it on the yard and switched off, the darn tie rod fell on the ground! Just like in that feed truck you were working on. Luckily it didn't pop out on the highway on his way home.

Warren, ridged will replace that wrench if you pursue it. If they are half the company that they used to be they will also want that wrench to figure out how and why it broke. I was in piping industry for 47 years and never saw one bust like that (plenty of bent/broken handles from putting ‘pull pipes’ on them) but not casting break. Make sure your supplier gets ahold of ridged.

I broke my aluminum pipe wrench 2 weeks ago too and ended up picking up a nice cast Irwin 36” from Amazon for $87 so far so good! Fukr is some heavy lol ! Thanks for sharing hope all is well on your end won’t stop raining here ! 👍

My dad was a pipe fitter for 50 years, he was 6.5 and 300 lbs and I seen him hanging on a Ridgid 4 foot , I never saw one break before.

That is bad luck on that pipe wrench. I've got the same one, and I just this weekend used a 5' piece of pipe as a cheater on it (someone gobbed up a 3 1/2 union with sealant), no problem. I'm amazed you broke it without an extension, you're hell when you're well.

Are you using a 3/8" hose? if so can you step up to a 1/2" IT will make the gun work better when you have the pressure.

I’ve watched this twice now, it was a pretty day anyway ! watching you with the unbroken pipe wrench leads me to ask why you don’t have a mechanics helper (six foot of 2” scaffold tube) on the truck !? this stuff is essential as a lever as rollers(as scaffolding ?) I’ve even seen it used to “quieten” a drunk bricklayer, got to have some !

My father who used to work on farm trucks in South America told me about front ends all wrapped with fence wire to keep the front end together to drive it into town and the shop. Problem was that it took a long time to get all that wire back off.

Dang i did the same thing with my rigid 36 a couple years back it broke in the exact same place while i was spinning some old 2 inch ball valves off some steel gas lines. I got hold of Rigid and had a new one mailed to me within two weeks but i did have my trusty old steel ones in the van to get me finished ... bastards are heavy but they dont break lol glad you didnt get hurt i smashed mine down into my shoulder pulling on it got a nasty bruise.

Warren, when you've got a stubborn pipe fitting like that, don't bother heating it, just lay the pipe on the ground and take a sledge hammer and give the fitting a good beating, then put it in the vise and it will screw right off. Believe me it works.

when i worked in the oilfields we used to change grease color every month to make sure the equip. was getting greased regular like. but apparently no one is greasing anything on that farm. on another note Hippy Camp is a no fly zone for me it's the land time forgot. the last time i was there i was delivering a tractor and heard "dueling Banjos" playing the whole time. i think most people there are hiding out from someone or something it's a great place to carry a sidearm 24/7

The problem is that he does a lot of work in the communist state of California, they do not have reciprocity with Oregon on concealed handgun permits. IIRC, Siskiyou county is one of the few that will actually give out concealed handgun permits. In Commifornia it's illegal to travel with a loaded weapon in the vehicle, the weapon must be unloaded and put in the trunk or some inaccessible location, making it useless. On the other side of the border it's trivial to get a permit and open carry is allowed.

Would be great for watching out for bear but the idiot want to run off all the time. Can't take him anywhere. I like to take a picture of the tag and vin with my phone and you can expand the picture and decipher what the tag says.

Good video mate, not preaching as I see you do a lot of work but Working on earthmoving equipment a long time and antisieze is not a waste of time, probably one of the first things you learn is what you need it on. Tie rod threads, the taper on the ball joint, the nut and the wheel studs for sure.

That happened on my truck so as a temp fix, I grabbed some wire to hold the ball in the socket. The wire has enough give in it to allow the wheel to turn. It works fine for moving it around

Had one like that years ago. Cut the head off of a bolt and welded it to the tie rod end ball. Drilled an oversized hole in the female side and put a nut and washer on loosely to hold it together. Truck made it into the barn.....

I have wire wrap a lot of tie rods up together to get them off the road. Would not recommend driving long distance or 50 mile an hour but works in a pinch to get them off the road way ;-)

working in logging camps all my life i have welded many tie rods up to get them out of the bush and back to the main shop at camp, do be repaired, i weld a 1/8th round bat ro the base of the tie rod and wrap it tight around to hold the ball in, this allows the ball to turn but holds in in its socket, then the truck can be driven 50 to 70 miles back to camp even with a 50 foot loaded pulp trailer, problem was many times they sent the truck to the spur, (rail road siding) to get unloaded, and back to the bush for another load, well they waited for the weekly supply truck to bring parts up..

I'm waiting on the pump for the D8k . We bought it from Ams construction, I have called 3 different people after the order was placed on Monday to give me some tracking information, not one of them has called me back. This is my last purchase from them. I have no Idea where it is. The back hoe transmission is mostly back together, still waiting on a few parts on it too.

so why do u not like never-seize? is it not as good as yrs ago? clear back to the late 70's at the coal companies i worked at, the mechanics used it -when we tore anything apart on the dozer or loader i was running back then. even when i owned my own tractor and trailer, if a bolt or nut came off, the never -seize bottle was the first thing i grabbed to reinstall it. i loved it-except for it getting on me. lol great video. thanks

Set toe with a board against the outside of each wheel extending forward the diameter of the tire. Measure between the boards at the front of the tire and 36 inches (or tire diameter) forward to get parallel and then a bit of toe in. I nailed it so the alignment rack could not align it better.
