When you do this just wash the honey comb material with water. This will prevent and asbestos particles being sniffed up by your nose. Yes you'll have to use a face mask as well.

Helped my best friend hollow out his precats and regular cat on his Spyder, sounded sorta weird after that though, had like metal tingy noise, he’s since swapped in a 2zz with a eBay 4-2-1 header for a lotus so currently he’s pie cutting the header runners at the flange to get the correct angle

Did it sound like a piece of ceramic rattling around? Probably a piece of that ceramic cat material. I want to try this on my matrix as it has this header cat.

I wish I had a mechanic inclined friend to help me with my mr2. Mechanic told me I had metal shavings in my oil. I parked it in fear of making it worse. I need to figure it out.

Usually only earlier models. But I would get rid of it anyways. Save your motor. No check engine light either

I life in germany, you cant gut the precat here, you have to have papers for your car and safety check (very annoying paper stuff) I want to get the facelift model. 1. Does anyone know if the problem got fixed 2. Is there any other way then gutting it or switching motors

The manifold sensors are before the pre-cats, so removing the pre-cats doesn't affect their readings. The third sensor is behind the main cat, and there should be no errors as long as the main cat is healthy.

I’m looking to buy a 2003 model and it only has 50k miles. If I remove the pre cat material will I still be able to pass SMOG and avoid any engine codes?

50/50 but you want to do it anyway otherwise you WILL destroy your engine and end up with another engine installed without the material anyway. Also there's aftermarket exhaust systems that pass smog I belive

Dan Nguyen from what I have read it is less common in the 2003 and later years.

@T E it's not really the piston rings, but the pistons didn't have sufficient holes number or holes or they were too tiny for the oil to be picked up.

I wonder how this would effect a smog check..as in would it still pass emissions? I'm guessing you don't live in California.

Not really. I dont know much about kalofornian tests.. But here in germany where all things emission related are handled pretty strict too it would not matter because pre cats are only really usefull while the car is cold, tests however are done when the car has warmed up. There is somewhat of a deviation but here its within tolerances.

It would pass fine as it still has the normal cat, these precats were just Toyota being overly cautious, with the normal cat it will have normal car emissions.

If the cats have asbestos in them then you should be really really careful as if you get it in your lungs 🫁 it will kill you and you need to dispose of it very carefully.

What do you do when an Mr2 is consuming so much oil? You change the oil today, next week is less than half. Any ideas anyone?

The 1zz have oil burning issues. If it’s going through that much start saving up for another 1zz or swap for a different motor

This is a very unpopular opinion but it is not the precat getting sucked back into the engine. Since the mr2 does not have egr (exhaust gas recirculation) Bits of the catalytic converter will just be bloßen out the back. According to professional mechanics the trouble is rather caused by sticky piston rings refusing to extend out because of cracked oil, resulting in increased oil consumption as it will enter the comustion chamber and be burned and decreasing power as the engine can not use the Explosion in the cylinder effectively due to blow off. There are additives to remove the coal from tight spaces that May help. Most importantly is to keep an eye on well lubricating the engine. The engine can still fail in the mr2 even though the precat Has been removed.
