I'm watching this video at 3am my time, because I was yet again obsessing over my hair split. Had no clue it was this common, was freaking out I'm going bald. Claudia Hernandez I always notice mine when I’m at the hair salon because I can see the back of my head with their double mirrors. I’m always horrified at how crazy it looks. I have a feeling my cowlick is probably getting worse because I started sleeping on my back a few years ago. Going to try this trick for sure!

I have not been able to wear my hair parted like I used to because of this problem. I only part it an inch in the front and keep checking the back of my hair with a hand mirror throughout the day. I have to use hair gel after washing and Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine hair spray in the back of my hair plus a really fat curling iron. I will definitely try this method. Also problematic is thinning at the temples if I wear my hair back. I didn't realize so many of us have this problem. I used to have so much more hair. I also have been increasing my biotin supplement dose hoping that helps as well.

It's a whirl. Where your hair grows in a Swirl. Some people call it a cowlick. It is a real pain in the butt. I saw a video of a guy taking the ladies hair like you did, but he did a little back comb, sprayed it let it dry and then used a flat iron or curling iron on the teased hair. I tried it and it really helped to keep my hair from splitting. I am a lot older and have fought this my whole life. My husband says I have a bald spot! It's not a damn bald spot lol. Some of us are just born with strange hair growth in the back of our heads. Thanks for the video!

I’ve been wearing a messy bun for YEARS because of this problem. I don’t even like to wash my hair anymore. (Dry shampoo and shower cap showers) because having to brush/comb it when it’s wet trying to find that perfect, magical “fix” is just too depressing. I will literally not go out or just put my hair back up in a messy bun. I have hair loss and hair damage now at my crown because of always wearing it up so it makes it even worse. Seeing this gives me hope. I’m gonna go wash my hair and try it out. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even if it doesn’t work out for me (I’m hair styling challenged) - just knowing I’m not the only one helps.

I’ve been doing some reading up on this and I’m pretty sure it is called a double crown. The hair grows in two different patterns and causes the gaps. I discovered mine about a year ago and I have been so self conscious of it ever since. I’m constantly touching where the split is to make sure it’s covered. I never wear it down anymore but even when I tie it up it still splits!! I think it looks even worse when it splits tied up so now I’m out of options. I thought it was something new that had started happening but I’ve since figured out that I always had it, just my hair was a lot thicker up until now so I never noticed. It is so thin these days it gets me down and I don’t know how to fix it.

I honestly thought that I was balding, too. I was pretty horrified. My hair is very thick from the neck down and it reaches to the back of my knees, but I didn't notice until a few months back that on the back of my head I have this cowlick or double crown that you mentioned. I ignored it, but decided not to anymore because I'm feeling self conscious. What I found is that you can "train" your hair growth pattern. The gist is that after drenching that area of your hair (ideally at night after showering), brush it/part it in the direction that you want it to be, clip it down and let it air-dry. After at least a week or two of doing this, your hair should get accustomed to growing in that new direction. I'm actually going to try this starting tomorrow night and I will document my results. Hopefully it will work.

It’s amazing how tied up our confidence is in our “crowning glory.” I’m certain mine happened after Covid but now I wonder how long I’ve been “confidently” walking around thinking I looked good and everyone else was looking at the river that ran through it. Yikes. I end up putting it up when I don’t want to think about it but all that spraying dries it out as well and hampers growth. Saw Palmetto, in combo with vitamins and collagen seem to help slightly. I never thought I’d be obsessed over something. I’m 71. Sometimes I think I should go short but I’m not sure that would help.

When I was 12, I still remember 18 years later when I first got paranoid about this same exact thing! A boy was standing behind me in the lunch line and said “hey everybody look! Katie is bald!” A few years later, I went to a hair salon and asked her if she had any solutions. She said “honey I’m a beautician, not a magician.” I was mortified! I have 3 of those on the back of my head (technical term is hair whorls, swirls or crowns). My grandma would call them remolinos (I probably spelled it wrong so don't judge me) and I usually fix it by spraying water on my hair and using a hair dryer to manipulate the pattern as I dry it again and that normally fixes it for me. Then I use hairspray to hold it in place.

I have straight long hair that falls down smoothly, except for this annoying piece of hair on top of the cowlick that wants to go in the opposite direction and just stands up like a weirdo all day 😂😅. I have been backcombing it multiple times a day to keep it stuck to the rest, but I definitely need to buy some hairspray cause it won’t last long.

I'm 43 and it just started happening to me. I would use a ton of mini bobby pins to hold it in place but then the split would separate the hair on the right side of my head. Most people think I'm in my early 30s but the bald spot started to make me feel so bad I'd have panic attacks getting ready to go out. I know it sound superficial but I take care of myself (diet and exercise) and my hair made me feel inadequate. I also have very long hair that's actually thick and really curly except that one part. I can't wait to try this.

I’ve only just started to see a gap in my hair and a pink scalp showing through. I have very thick and wavy hair. My thoughts are it’s appeared because my layered hair has got longer so it hasn’t got the same lift it used to have and I’ve not coloured it during lockdown. I’m grey under my blonde. I’m wanting to keep my hair longer and try out my natural grey look too, which is why I You Tubed this problem. Glad to see it’s a common problem for people with thick hair and it’s not just because I’m going grey. Thanks for the video and tips.

Curling tip for you, have a large wide or full length mirror behind you at an angle so you can see the back of your head when you are curling the back, makes a huge difference for me anyway. Plus helps while you hide the cowlick. I have always worn my hair long and not that it is cut to an above the shoulder shag POP goes the cowlick... Super annoying so thanks for your trick. Appreciate it!

True its not a permanent fix, I mean how can you to that? I thought I'd made a bald patch from putting my hair in an updo with comb to cover the area! After noticing it yet again I bought a hat but cant exactly wear hats all the time so this idea is actually an expansion of what I've tried. I think by setting it with the flat iron would make it last through the day. I think drying off your hair in this area with some volumising product might also help it last

26 year old male with fine long hair here. I've got this kind of thing though it isn't as noticeable until I sleep on it. I can see it before I shower in the morning, but even with clean and dried hair it's still noticeable if I shine bright light on it. Worried it might be a sign of balding, but it might not be. Everyone I've asked says it's just my part and it's normal, that I've just got fine hair and that's making the scalp under my parting more noticeable, and I've got the feeling it might have become more visible since I went a few years letting my hair get really really oily and sleeping on it a day or two before washing it multiple times a week. So it's possible I've just damaged my hair somehow and I need to take better care of it. Really hoping it's not a sign of balding, not sure what my chances are since the men on my mom's side of the family didn't go bald, but the men on my dad's side all went bald except for my dad which is interesting. I could be wrong and I could be starting to show signs of balding, which is why when the whole social distancing thing is over and I can go out again I'm booking an appointment with a dermatologist to look into this. If it is something like that I'm going to do my best to stop it and make it look as good as possible if I can't.

waj9876 Hey please don’t despair. I very much doubt your3 going bald. I’m You tubing this problem because I’ve suddenly discovered it during lockdown. I’ve not had my hair cut for 16 weeks. Usually a 4 to 5 wk person. I’m female. I’ve got thick, layered (because it’s so thick) wavy hair and it’s usually a job to see my scalp. But I’ve just noticed a parting on the crown at the back of my head and I’m so paranoid about it. I feel like it’s an old lady bald spot because I’m also letting my hair go grey. But I know I’m not going bald and it’s just my hair parting on my crown, probably showing up because my hair has got longer and I need to find a way to deal with it. Don’t go wasting money on a dermatologist. See your hairdresser first and mention it.
