Just found out about Stefi Cohen yesterday. From the couple of vids I saw yesterday I think she is not only a physical specimen but also an expert in technique and explanation. Which I must say applies to this vid as well. I think I learned a lot from this kind sir and I can't wait to apply these principles at my next deadlift workout. I was happy to give it the 97th up vote. Thank you for posting!

Thank you for making it clear,albeit in a roundabout way,that if you can break the floor you can lift it.and so when novices start deadlifting the only focus should be to see how much they can break.and then address the minutiae.

Very useful! My hips tend to shoot so it was helpful to understand how this relates to my suboptimal starting position. I've been so paranoid about over-engaging my back (and potential injury) that I started squatting lower at start position to incorporate more leg/quad involvement, but I think this has actually been to my detriment.

Same! For me it was most noticeable on the heavier sets (lifts like 3x bw) but on lighter ones my form seemed pretty good even starting where I'm not optimal. So he was right in training with the bigger loads to truly get to see what style is best for you

Hi you didn’t say anything about the lats or bracing the core but I have a question how much back muscle is involved when doing conventional deadlift? I know it’s a posterior chain exercise you push from the floor with your quads and then when it’s gets about the knees you push your hips forward using your glutes the lats keep tight so the bar doesn’t move forward

For the deficit deadlift, is it ok to use plates with a smaller diameter instead of a block ? The 15 and the 10 kilo plates in my gym have smaller diameter. So the bar is closer to the ground and essentially you have to reach further down.

Question: What if you are hyper mobile in your hips and hamstrings and it takes a lot to feel your hamstrings pulling?
@yokohamaborn
@yokohamaborn 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe train Romanian deadlifts with decent weight and focus on slow eccentric motion (i.e. slow lowering of the weight) under load for 8-10 reps / set. You'll feel your hamstrings activated (burning) and develop mind-muscle connection over time. Romanians are also great practice for conventional deadlift anyway. But, I'm not Stefi Cohen so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I've always wondered what back position is most optimal and safe I guess. I've seen videos where people have really rounded backs and they are lifting a bunch of weight lol idk is that ok ?
@yokohamaborn
@yokohamaborn 4 жыл бұрын
My humble opinion: it's not recommended for long term back health, but when you see people compete for a 1 rep max, they are lifting a LOT of weight and sometimes form ends up compromised on that lift. Normally your spine should be "neutral" and lower back should not be rounded. Stefi has videos on adaptation and injury that explain a lot about this subject if you look on her page.

Not sure I agree with the accessory selection for "missing off of the floor". There was no mention of halting deadlifts or paused deadlifts and they have much higher specificity then deficit deadlifts or stiff leg. Missing from the floor, assuming the weight isn't just too high, is usually a technical issue; I am not sure I see the use in concentrating on accessories which are basically a different movement from the conventional deadlift, when there are other options that are essentially the exact same movement pattern.
