Replacing the fuel vent valve on a 2008 BMW 328i
NOTE: Before replacing the valve, replace the gas cap and reset the check engine light. If the same codes come up. Then replace the valve.
I told my friend to go to Autozone and they will hook up a scan tool and tell you why the check engine light is on for free.
DTC code was P0442 small evap leak, P0440 malfunction with the evaporate emissions system.
I then asked him to go to a good independent shop and have them diagnose what the code is and test the Evap system for leaks, since I do not have the proper equipment to test his car.
Once they determined it was a bad fuel tank vent valve,

I said, I never replaced one but I can try.

Have a 2006 325i and she wouldn't start easily after fill up. This was the perfect fix...if you want to test the purge valve before you buy it you can test it bye removing the valve as they show and then try to blow thru it...you shouldn't be able to. If you can then its definitely bad. Thank you sooo much! I had no idea where to start, saved me cash and you made it easy!!!

Yup, that is a canister purge valve that allows fuel vapor to be pulled into the throttle body intake when pressure in vapor canister rises too high. The vent valve is typically on the vapor canister or near to the gas tank. Vent valve allows atmospheric air and pressure to enter the canister so a vacuum is not created when the vapor is recycled back to the throttle. If the vent valve is stuck open, vapors will escape into environment and MIL will be thrown. If vent valve is stuck closed, vehicle may run poorly and fuel may be drawn up into the canister causing failure of carbon element. Hope that helps

I fixed my p0440 code by jb welding that plastic nipple on top of the fuel pump it was broken open. I also replaced the fuel pump gasket. $11 as fuel was leaking out when fuel was topped up. That fixed that code and was able to get smog. Months later p0442 is now active im thinking it may be the issue on the sending unit side. Goona replace gasket and check that nipple on that side.

Most likely the vacuum line from the secondary air pump that goes behind the engine

I had the codes P2401 , P2419,P1429 that pointed towards this Evap Canister being faulty but after rrplacement of the DMTL and characoal canister I still have the codes. The check engine comes back after a drive. Anyone have any help please?

Fix It Angel I swapped out the purge valve and it fixed the not wanting to fill up to the "click" Only thing left is a DMTL heater code 2A18 on the 06 BMW 325xi. Hopefully I can diagnose further since the pump is new so it's gotta be a wire perhaps?

Angel Bijarro swap out the purge valve. Pretty easy and will fix the not wanting to start after refuel.

what were your symptoms?? I have a rough idle and p0440. I am trying to figure out if its the fuel cap (doesn't seem like it, looks brand new), bad high pressure fuel pump (seems unlikely since I have no power loss when accelerating), or purge valve. I think it is the purge valve but I haven't been able to find anyone with the same symptoms with a solution. Any info would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

+Hollis Allen Hello Hollis, if you have a rough idle, might have a vacuum leak. The P0440 code should be related but it's a small air leak problem. Is that just the only code?

+Fix It Angel well its weird because i got that code when i scanned it at advanced auto parts, but when i scanned it with my new scanner at home, it did not show up, although that code is in the catalog of codes that reader is able to display. I scanned it at advanced auto parts previously and didn't have the p0440 code. I went back after my idle went rough and the only extra code i had was p0440. the other codes i have before were P112F, P0174, P0171, P0420, P0430 but I'm pretty sure all are caused by cat delete.

OK the P0171 is a lean condition causing the rough idle. It might be a vacuum leak or your MAF sensor is bad or dirty. I suggest to bring it to a goos shop to diagnose, they have better scan tools to pin point the problem. Hope it all works out for you.

+Fix It Angel Went back to Advanced Auto Part to use their scanner, and the p0440 code is magically gone...weird. I think it was due to gas cap being loose. BUT today I randomly checked my oil level while driving as a do a few times per week, and the level was at BARE MINIMUM. The idle symptoms are identical to when there was a small leak in my valve cover gasket...so it wasn't until I went to clean my MAF sensor today (which was actually in pristine shape), and read about how you shouldn't use brake part cleaner since it deteriorates rubber and plastic, that I realized what the problem was. I used brake part cleaner to clean my Vanos solenoids last week, apparently causing the seals to become more damaged than they already were. I know I should have replaced them, but I didn't. The seals didn't leak for a day or two and performance increased, so naturally I thought everything was all fine and dandy!! I pulled them back out again today and noticed what looks like old down the front, although it's not wet, just looks like built up oil residue and dirt. Just ordered the seals, so hoping this is the fix! should be at least. Thanks for your help man! I'll let you know how it goes.

N and F series use a combined FUEL TANK VENT / PURGE VALVE SOLENIOD.ON on intake. but what I was referring to is ALL the prior series utilized a PURGE VENT VALVE SOLENOID. located on the front underside of the intake . alont with a FUEL TANK VENT VALVE SOLENOID located on the charcoal canister and DMTL PUMP. Up in the rear right wheel well. Sorry for the misunderstanding.. That's all I was trying to prevent. Because it's hard to get all the facts right in ten minute video.. We were both correct.and. like you . I only want to help our community understand the systems they need our help on.. Thank you for your quality video. Hope I have helped clarify.
