may I suggest rigging your dust collector system so it has a pivoting arm like Mark Galicic has on his saw mill for the hydraulic lines. And I would highly recommend a "Floor chute" so when you sweep up you just move it over to the large floor inlet and let it handle it. And have a hand held hose like you do on a shop vac to tidy up the Lt70

Hey Nathan, the six inch hose needs to be about four inches so that it matches the intake fitting of your blower. The larger hose reduces the velocity inside. It's the velocity that moves the saw dust, not the vacuum. Think of the difference between 20 MPH wind and 40 MPH wind. 20 MPH just makes a whistling sound but 40 MPH can take the roof off. The force increases to the square of the velocity. Double the velocity, four times the force. The area inside the hose increases to the square of the radius. The radius of the six inch hose is three inches. The radius of the four inch hose is two inches. 3^2=9 2^=4 The six inch hose has more than twice the area of the four inch hose which means, for the same volume of air, the velocity inside the four inch hose is more than twice the velocity inside the six inch hose. That makes a big difference when you're trying to move saw dust.

@@VTKingdomsawing Nathan says that he tried a smaller hose but it didn't work for him. My reasoning is that the velocity of the air flow is more important than the volume of the air flow. Larger hose, less flow resistance due to lower velocity results in a higher flow rate but lower velocity. Smaller hose, has more flow resistance due to the higher flow rate which yields a lower flow rate, but higher flow velocity. It's the velocity of the air flow that moves objects entrained in the flow, not the volume of the flow. In a summer storm there may be wind gusts of 40 MPH for example. The result is practically no damage to infrastructure. In a hurricane the wind velocity can exceed 80 MPH. The force of the wind does not just double with the doubling of wind speed, the force increases to the square of the velocity change. If the force was 40 lbs at 40 MPH then the force at 80 MPH would be 1640 lbs.

Husqvarna 372 with 36 inch bar is all I use to cut down the trees for my sawmill. I burn all my slab cut offs except for what I burn for firewood in my shop. Great video as always.

If you add old coffee grounds to the compost pile, it draws worms that digest the pile, and feeds the chickens a handy meal. If in the ground, they will rise into the hill and leave castings.

I'm on the bandwagon supporting other commenters suggesting connecting a floor sweep to the "Y" fitting on the dust collector. Rockler has a dandy one with a handle. I thought of that the first time you showed your new set-up. You could even get a blast gate (manual or powered) to switch it on and off. Very fast and better on your lungs than sweeping. Also, switching from 6" to 4" hose would increase the velocity of the dust extraction. You could bring some hose from the shop to try it. I know it seems backwards, but worked in my wood shop. Hope your procedure took care of any and all issues. Thanks for another look into your daily life.

Well, I've been a furniture maker for quite some time and mostly use cherry as the wood of choice. I do not pick my slabs based on the lack of sap wood or not. In fact, I try to celebrate and incorporate it into my design. Sap wood makes for some interesting designs.

I switched to diesel for blade lube and for the life of my question why i ever waited to do so. What a difference! My dust collector hose is looped and hung on pulleys and runs on a cable to keep it up. I also run my power wires and other wiring on that cable. My milll is 3 phase electric. Just a few things i found to be a huge improvement to my little setup.

Not useless. I make a lot of cooking utensils and that would be great for it. It's a bit of a pain, but you can work around the checks to find plenty of spoons and spatulas in that.

Another great video. l learnt chainsaw when l was 19 and have used them occasionally up until the age of 66. l remember that the man who taught me all those years ago said that l would spend as much on PPE as l did on my saw if l was to do it right. l recommend leg chaps and gloves as a minimum in addition to eye and ear protection. Strong footwear is also important (no flipflops!!) l happen to think that the world is probably a slightly better place with you all in it, so be safe.

question do you line up the center at the start of a new log end for end . and every time you flip the log? i know this is old video but never saw it your new barn is looking nice. fyi make your son a clock like 36in cookie etc and hang in the new shed . or find a saw blade that is old and make a clock from it i bet he knows where to buy clock kits from Brano's lumber mill . hang it center in the end wall . if you do decide that start a page i got the first 100.00 thank you from west tn.

Consider picking up the log with the skid steer before cutting with the chain saw. Easier on the back and keeps the blade out of the dirt

You ever climbed in and out of a skid steer while holding a log? Especially a large log, for those of us with back issues, the extra work getting in and out of the skid steer makes the advantage not worth it. Not to mention the possibility of slipping and falling makes it a no for me anyway.

I'm a woodworker, high end tables and cabinets. Agree, we dont like cherry sapwood. It contrasts too much with the wood. Very few sawyers actually remove it though, they leave it up to us to pay the bdft for it then cut it off ourselves.

Something to consider when using the Kato to lift large logs Nathan. Has been my experience that equipment of its size have hydraulics that operate best when the throttle is at a high level. Usually this is true because the hydraulic system operates best at high pump speed. Usually you can pick up heavier loads with confidence because you can ease into the controls to make the lift rather than having to kind of make a weight lifters jerking motion to start the lift. Something to try on your next attempt at large logs. Have a good day.

The dust collection system appears to be working quite well. Maybe you can create a container (that dumps) the sawdust goes in to so you won't have continually scoop it off the ground. Just a thought. Glad to hear all is well with the cancer. Stay safe.

Nathan, if you’re going to extend your exhaust hose a couple of feet you could use a blast gate as the coupler. That would prevent critters from going in and building a nest during the sawmill downtime.

Hi Nathan Just a suggestion if you can hook up a vacuum hose to the suction side of the dust collector that you can open and close you could use it to clean the floor and blow it into the pile Also a dump cart outside to catch the saw dust would make it easier to move

I would hang the blower for the dust collector up from the rafters and run hard pipe out the side of the building to vent it. If you rig the hose right it will clear up your floor space.

Can you position an IBC tote with the top removed under the dust extractor, that way you could pick up up and haul it with the skidsteer and dump it. Or build a frame and discharge into bulk bags
