His acting in this scene is just amazing. It has that enormously strong man in a world made of cardboard quality to it at the beginning; the way he gently and delicately sets her down. Then his outpouring of grief and sorrow is just so very real and raw. You see him try to accept what's happened, try to take it in his stride, do what he's sworn to do and abide by the rules he's been taught and then you just see the rage and anger and unwillingness to swallow that. Then finally that scream that roar that comes out of him; it's the sound of an angry god. I just see THE Superman of the comics right here, come to life off the page itself. Nobody else will ever be as definitively Superman as Chris Reeve is for me.

did not concieve that till reading your comment and watching the scene again...but u t 100% correct...the deeper conception of the advice given by his rel father is while you may live among the humans you must at all times remember that you are not of their world....it is auto human nature to control the outcome of events n situations and that is a trait born of the ego..once he felt compelled to control the outcome he became a servant of the ego vs a master of the ego with the will/force to usurp the ego....

@PistolPete19806 жыл бұрын
lol he didnt reverse the rotation of the earth. The theory goes if something goes faster than the speed of light time will reverse for that object. Superman flew faster than light so he was time traveling to the past, the earth only appeared to reverse rotation to his point of view and ours. A way to look at it is if your watcing a video of the earth rotating, and than you rewind that movie while watching it, it would appear the earth was rotating in reverse.

This scene, and especially Superman's scream of rage, still gives me goosebumps each and every time I see it!
@Dr._Atom2 жыл бұрын
For me I'm gonna take it like this: It's not that the earth changed its rotation, it's superman that's going so face he turned back time (time travel to the past) that we see it's effect in real time on earth, just like the flash did in ZSJL. But then why did he also seem to put the rotation back to normal? No, what he did was just circling the earth to observe the entire planet to make sure everything's alright after he had rewinded time. That's how I make sense of the scene, take whatever explanation you like, for me the more logical/believable the better

@@Dr._Atom Since we don't have spacecraft fast enough to do the same thing, we'll never know if circling the earth so fast will really do this. The way I look at this, is Superman just needed to rewind the clock for about an hour. That's about how much the earth rotated backwards. At that point, Hoover Dam didn't collapse, and Lois Lane was still alive trying to start her car. Of course, everything else in the solar system, galaxy and the entire universe, still advanced in time, so things will still be off with atomic clocks, satellites, the moon, etc. The movie didn't explain all this, but maybe Superman did some last minute tidying up later on. :/

People think he made the earth stop rotating and reversed it. That is not at all what happens in this scene. What he is doing is flying around the earth much faster than the speed of light, and by doing so he is traveling back in time (from the safety of the vacuum of space.) What the audience is shown is everything slowing down and reversing as he is flying faster and faster. I guess it is confusing to witness but the flash did it in the Zack Snyder cut of JL in almost the exact same way (faster than light speed)

I’m 50 yrs old… lying here on my living room floor in Southern California. For some reason this scene was “recommended” to me just moments ago (thank you KZbin)… and I’m recalling this scene as I saw it in the theater as a kid. I don’t think there was or will ever be anything more powerful and haunting as Superman screaming in remorse and helplessness and then his internal challenges pushed aside as his POWER takes over to refuse the loss of Lois and his determination to bring her back. The sound of that horrific scream is something I’m surprised they allowed to subject children to back in the day… but perhaps what our generation needed and was blessed with back then. In fifty years on this planet, nothing has affected me more profoundly than this cinematic moment. It is pure, relentless, unapologetic, and unstoppable power.

We have already “time traveled“ to the future thanks to time dilation(special relativity). We actually time travel a lot. It’s why we have to rewind the clocks on our satellites periodically, because they go through space faster, they also go through time faster. Superman is written to be able to fly faster than than the speed of light, and according to special relativity if you move faster than the speed of light, space time around you would move backwards. So this scene is actually kinda scientifically accurate. Of course we will never be able to go faster than the speed of light making backwards time travel impossible. I know I’m a nerd.

As to the question of "Why doesn't he just turn back the world on everything" that I've seen - my take on it is that like normal people can't lift a car except under extreme duress, Superman can't normally turn back time. And I don't think he can ever do it again (Donner's S2 cut notwithstanding, which is one of many reasons why I didn't like it). He made a choice when he defied Jor-El, and bound himself to our world. He didn't do it out of arrogance of his power - he did that out of pure, heartbreaking grief. CR's Superman will always be the best, and most human, to me!
