I still contend that Bruce's characterization may have been badly altered by the secret changes made to suicide squad. One of the defining elements of batman is that he does not kill, which does not make a whole lot of sense unless he believes that people can be saved with the right treatment, hence all the talk about being a symbol in the dark knight trilogy. The antithesis of this is to take a perfectly fine person raised with the best breeding and to turn them into a monster. It is implied by the tattoos and the unusually youthful presentation of 'damaged joker' (the joker usually looks older than the batman) that he is actually robin, brainwashed into thinking he's the joker. Having robin be transformed so quickly, so badly, kind of shows the futility or sisyphean nature of this aspect of the batman. It's possible that in the shock of this, batman forgot that he even ever had another purpose. Before he chose to 'become a symbol', his goal was to defend the innocent. Having forgotten this, he feels like a criminal, just beating up thugs without any hope of improving anything. He feels ashamed of what he was, and then he sees the superman, who is everything he thought he was before but even worse since he is super powered. What happens to a super man with a super ego when he super falls like Bruce did? Will he have a super hatred and super anger? Why not, given that he is nearly invincible and an alien? This is why bruce hates the superman. All he can see is his own flaws reflected in superman, but even worse since superman is super powerful and nearly unkillable. The danger of a fallen superman causes Bruce to become obsessed, enough to notice that the particles generated by the world engine can actually weaken him. He is so obsessed with the notion of stopping the superman that he forgets to do his usual background investigation. Of course, he has also lost hope that being the batman is meaningful. This is why the Martha line hits him so hard, it's a reminder that the batman hasn't just failed at being a symbol to others, he's forgotten how to actually be the batman. Having lois tell the batman a thing that should have been obvious to him with his usual detective work (that the superman obviously must have had a human life to match his human features) reminds him of what he used to be and what his original mission was. It's a reminder of an earlier version of himself whose primary mission was to protect the innocent, symbols be damned. But, without it being obvious that damaged joker is actually robin, why does batman see himself as a criminal? Why does he give criminals a brand on the face, with no hope of changing from their path? Why is he fallen? The movie gives no explanation other than robin apparently being dead, but batman always knew that his and robins lives were at risk. That changes nothing from their mission. The only reason for a man to become depressed is if he feels useless, or the meaning of his life is ripped away. Robins death would not have caused this, at least not as much as seeing all the work he put into robin go so bad so quickly. The ultimate joke is not to kill robin, it's to show the futility of batman and robins path. Without this essential bit, the characterization of batman in this film feels as odd as Clarks characterization in man of steel. That movie would have benefitted from a reminder to audiences that this movie universe is an elseworld. With that in mind, everything else falls into place. This is a world where being a Kansas farmer wasn't as rewarding as it was for the kents in the comics. This is a world where the harsh reality of survival necessitates a harsher and more cynical stance. This is an elseworld tainted by anti life from darkseid. Without mentioning in the title that man of steel is an elseworld (you can leave the darkseid part out, audiences can figure that out on their own), audiences were shocked by the presentation of Clark and pa Kent. Without it being more obvious that damaged joker is robin, or that the batman feels that he has utterly failed in his mission, audiences are shocked by the darker batman and mystified that he has failed to do any investigation beyond how to stop the superman.

I love how the Kryptonite gradually wears off and it's unclear how much Superman's powers have recovered. When Batman punches into Superman's steel face he's visibly worried because he's like "shit did I lose my opening?". Superman thinks he's pretty much fully recovered but his bullet like speed isn't quite there and he isn't able to stop the 2nd Kryptonite grenade. After that it was game over for Clark. Really appreciated the pacing and story telling of this fight

Batman prepared more than enough for this fight. Taking advantage of Superman's compassion towards humanity, Batman knew he wouldn't be wasted in nano seconds. The idea of using lead smoke and Kryptonite bomb was outstanding. Any superhumans facing Batman on his level end up getting bullied

Unlike Batman, Lex Luthor doesn't magically know every martial art on the planet (skills that Batman never had when he was first created in his original run of Detective Comics). Therefore, technically, Lex Luthor's defeat of Superman over the years is MORE IMPRESSIVE than Batman's defeat because Lex Luthor ONLY HAS his intellect, whereas Batman has mastered 27 martial arts (something no human could realistically achieve and he never had all those martial arts skills when he was first created in his original run of Detective Comics). At the end of the day, Batman "beating" Superman is nothing new and certainly nothing special since the mere human Lex Luthor already beat Superman plenty of times.
