In the last volume of Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher Saga" there is a nice reference to this term - a young boy who wants to join the army and fight the Nilgaardians tells a dwarf captain in an inn that the war they're about to fight in is The War Able To Put An End To All Wars. And the captain spits, takes a sip of beer and points at a fat lady by the counter: "You see her, boy? She's Evangelina Parr. She's big. Some may even say she's enormous. But, despite her size, she's definitely not a hooker able to put an end to all hookers...

I just noticed something interesting in this scene. The lasso compels Steve to tell the truth, anytime he resist he feels pain. When he starts talking about war, especially when he says the line “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen” you can tell his in pain, and I suspect it’s because he is unwilling to admit the truth of how afraid he is and how much pain and suffering he has witnessed as a result of the war. It’s a subtle but interesting expression during a critical moment of the film. Chris Pine did an excellent job in this scene.

WW1 tends to get overlooked and overshadowed by WW2, but we cannot forget that not only was this the first war that engulfed the entire planet (hence the name) it's the war that changed warfare. For centuries, it had always been the larger army had the most likely chance of succeeding. Even when it went from the sword and spear to the musket and bayonet, it was still considered having the larger army had the best chance of winning. But WW1 made the use of larger armies obsolete; the weapons were evolving faster than we knew how to fight an counter. And what was worse, we had officers who were so used to how we fought before, (both armies marching out onto the field and taking turns exchanging shots while the other side reloads) and stubbornly believed that the war could still be won that way. Machine gun turrets and mortars could wipe out entire battalions in seconds, and long range artillery could destroy entire trenches. This was also the first time we had developed tanks, flamethrowers and fighter planes for warfare. But the worst of it was the gas. Imagine peeking over your trench and seeing a thick green or yellow cloud miles long coming at you. One such event was in 1915, the second year of the war, at Osowiec Fortress. The Germans used chlorine and bromine gas in order to kill the Russians who were holding the line so that they could cover the retreat of the Russian army. The Russians had nothing to use to protect themselves from the gas, save for torn shirts and rags to cover their mouths and noses. When the Germans advanced, they expected the Russians to be completely wiped out. What they did not expect was for 100 Russians to slowly and painfully pick themselves up and advance toward them. The gas had killed most of the Russians there; those that got up suffered a far worse fate. The chemicals from the gas mixed with the moisture in their lungs, forming an acidic compound. They were poisoned and melting from the inside out. Their appearance was like that of the walking dead, coughing up large amounts of blood and bits of lung as flesh fell off here and there. This frightened the Germans so much that they retreated without firing a shot, despite having 7,000 men against the 100 Russians. This event was known as the Attack of the Dead Men, and one of the reasons why chemical warfare was forbidden for future use.
@equarg2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes…. Look up Sabaton, they have a song “Attack of the dead men” commending this. They have many songs about WW1 and WW2. Plus other battles. I am not a fan of metal rock…….but Sabaton is now an exception to that rule. Back then there was no word Zombie back then to describe the living dead. That was not till after WW2 I think…name came from a movie. But if that word had existed, the Germans would of been SCREAMING it!

@patrioticjustice9040 Жыл бұрын
@@RetroCube That shows how wild and chaotic the first Great War was. No one knew how to fight it. With each new weapon came desperation in tactics, which led to more new weapons and even greater desperation. People truly believed the first World War was going to be the end of the world, and that it was only going to end one way; last man standing. One such event to help demonstrate the chaotic desperation was December 13th, 1916, also known as White Friday on Mount Marmolada. There was no success in the battle, and more soldiers each day were dying from freezing to death rather than actual combat. Desperate for an advantage, the officers had the idea to launch mortars at the peaks of the mountain in order to bury the other side in an avalanche. Good strategy; except both sides had the same idea. Over 10,000 died on that mountain; most are buried under so much ice and snow we've only been able to recover a dozen or so bodies 100 years later. To this day, Passchendaele is considered one of the greatest military blunders in history. Over 600,000 died in that battle to claim a mile of territory, which was lost again the next day. A decent amount of those men died not from combat, but from drowning in mud made from heavy rainfall and artillery destroying underground pipes.

Not really. The first world war didn't resolve anything, folks just got tired of fighting. Part of the reason why folks were initially well-disposed to Germany's initial pushes were the fact that the common sentiment was that what had been done to Germany was far too harsh, and that harshness has resulted not just in Germany's economic collapse, but had a domino effect that suppressed the entire economy of Europe. Then add the rise of Stalinist Russia, and the issue that the United States refused to ratify the same United Nations precursor (the League of Nations) that president Woodrow Wilson had thought would be instrumental in avoiding further open conflict, and you brew the perfect conditions for the second world war to begin.

He had the church’s support to rain horror on the Jews. But sure, coz u r a brainwashed sheep, give in to the Church’s propoganda and call it Swastika. You do you.
@irish56624 жыл бұрын
@@beowulf555 That is a complete fabrication invented by people like you who hate organized religion. I'm sorry to disillusion you, but you're no different from the Neo-Nazis who claim the Jews made up the Holocaust. It's a historical fact that while Hitler and several of his followers were raised Christian, he became hostile towards religion during his rise to power, none more so than Judaism. Moreover, the German Catholic Church opposed the Nazi party. But hey, I'm sure I should ignore all the historical facts and the common consensus just because one person on youtube said so. Of course, I think the large army of American Christian men (which includes my grandfather and great-uncles) that fought against Hitler would disagree with you. And before you type out your witty comeback, know that I truly don't care. This all started because I said most people say swastika, but you're clearly going to be triggered by anything I have to say, so I don't plan on engaging further. Have a nice day~

@4:00 Can we all appreciate how well this moment truly conveys the scale and horror that was the First World War, sure the second was worse but you have to consider the perspective of the human race at the time, before this the largest conflict still in living memory was the Napoleonic wars and that was just armies of men firing muskets and small cannons. World War I was the first time we would witness conflict on an industrial scale, weapons wielded by a single man that could kill hundreds, unstoppable war machines that can lay waste to entire cities, clouds of toxic gas that no one can hide from, it truly looked like an apocalyptic future.

Good point. My grandfather fought in the First World War (or The Great War, as it was known then) and he would never, never speak of it to anyone. He passed away in 1990 at the age of 97. All he ever said about it, was once to my grandmother "if you had seen the terrible sights I saw, you would get down on your knees and thank God you had been spared such things, and if you wish to please me, never ask me of it again."
@josephmargetanski9123 жыл бұрын
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 - My uncle was the same way. He fought in the Pacific during World War 2, and had to use a flame thrower against the Japanese who refused to come out of the caves. I can't imagine the trauma that would cause.

@@josephmargetanski912 We have checked out my grandfather's service record and he was in both the battle of Fromelles and in the battle of Polygon Wood. Meaning that he likely saw mustard gas being used, which caused terrible burns and lifelong lung damage. A lot of men that came home from the Great War suffered what was then called shell shock - today it would be recognised as PTSD

I've always thought that the reason Steve is able to resist the Lasso of Truth temporarily is that the way the Lasso's power would operate specifically; in-universe, would be to remove the inhibitions of someone lying while simultaneously turning any emotions connected to the lie: Greed, malice, shame, guilt, etc. into a burning sensation; both physically and mentally, that would be experienced worse the greater the selfish attachment to the lie. Steve however has no selfish reason to deny them information, hence why it takes a few seconds longer and he's able to resist temporarily as the Lasso's effect has to transform selfless emotions; which would be more difficult to manipulate, hence his temporary resistance. Essentially, if the Lasso removes inhibition and turns negative emotions into a painful force that compels the truth from anyone, then emotions based in selfless actions would not be as immediately painful as the weight of moral duty vs. selfish greed turned against you; by this magical force, would be; in contrast, less immediately painful and compelling. If so, it's a clever way to subtly characterise him as a morally good person from the get go; despite being in a morally grey conflict and job.

I can appreciate the logic in this view of the specific mechanism the lasso operates on. It's well thought out and consistent with what is portrayed.
