We have lookism here in America too. I had friends that stopped inviting places because I gained weight. This is a world issue

Size 8 is large because koreans are fit. It is a measurment simply based on normal koreans size. Fyi, obesity rate in Korea is 1/7 of that in the US.

Mental health wise they are not as fit, apparently. Highest suicide rate in the world.

@@susemcx only suicide shows mental illness? We Americans have so many homeless, mass $h00tings, drug problems and crime. We have a much larger mental health problem here in America.

She is hating on a whole country and making fake drama to sell books. That your size is large in Korea is just a fact, doesn't mean they were unwelcoming. And saying that being into looks is the same as racism or sexism? We in the US wrote the book on all of that. This is ridiculous hypocritical BS.

She is actually not hating at all, I have listened to the book on audible. I can highly recommend it. She is very empathetic towards Koreans who struggle meet those standards. She is not even opposed to treatments. She said she felt unwelcome, not that people were unwelcoming.

LOL, is she paying you for a review or are you just a fool? She exaggerates and says "it's very unwelcoming" and she was "flooded" with model posters. US wrote the book on slim models and cosmetic surgery. Ever hear of Kate Moss? Not to mention the author is making up BS terms like lookism and body neutrality. Diabetes doesn't care about body neutrality. She is scapegoating South Korea and worse giving bad health advice to sell books.

I've grown up in Korea but never heard of babies getting facial or 3 year old getting eyelash extensions. I wonder where Ms. Hu got her facts(more likely fake news).

She lived there as a journalist for 4 years. At least one of her children was born there. She probably had very different experiences as a mother from someone growing up there.

I love how foriegners feel empowered to judge another society and offer their own opinion on a better alternative, and then a commercial break, when all the make up technicians touch up the people on camera, so foul.

There is beauty in every type of people. We can not all be a size 2. And if they can, how bad do they look? All skin and bones? We finally have gotten to be a little nicer about different sizes.

The average height of a South Korean female is 157 cm (5' 2"). So being small is not that unrealistic. It's much more unrealistic for US females, where they are on average taller and (more likely to) have weight issues.

@A. Melanoleuca Isn't the average height of a South Korean female 162cm? As younger generations are getting taller than old ones, female teenagers are about 167cm.

Size 8 is LARGE! Oh my. I lived in Panama in the early 70’s. I am petite, but there, I was considered “BIG” or FAT! Of course, the people there were tiny. Af 5’3” I was considered tall. The average height for women in the villages was under five feet. For the first time in my life I wasn’t the smallest in the house.
