Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

I've seen this movie about 5 times. Partially because of this man and his performance. Such a beautiful human being.

Matthias is a soulful, highly intelligent, enigmatic being; evocative and alive. He is such a beautiful contradiction in substance and style; an Alpha male with such rare tenderness, always present ... Palpably real & raw in every role I have seen him. From the start of this interview he schools this interviewer with his deep, visceral understanding of authenticity, humanity, art and nature. Multi-lingual - I am in awe of his capacity to innately communicate his ideas in perfect English; (a language he learnt from watching American movies.) It's a joy to see him interviewed as he is so generous and humble. I am becoming his biggest fan!

While I agree that matthias is very capable of expressing some deep and complex ideas in English. He didn't learn English from watching movies, English is taught in Belgian (Flemmish) schools as a basic subject. It's rather rare to meet someone from Belgium who doesn't speak at least 2 different languages.

Matthias is so eloquent, insightful and thoughtful with his answers. He becomes the person that he is portraying and one cannot ask anything more of an actor. I love to watch his films because he does it every time.

Matthias explains that authenticity is not a concept. Either you feel a certain way that is real or not real. He is so intelligent and has a great command of the English language and transfuses his explanation in any language he is speaking. He's so gifted and is able to explain the movie beautifully. He's great and handsome and we haven't seen an actor like him in a long time.

I have been listening to many other actors try to explain how thwy are feeling, how they are enjoying their spare time and I really haven't heard ant come close to how Matthias explains who he is trying to reincarnate and he does it so intelligently. He is a genius.

I am a huge fan of The Madding Crowd I have viewed all three of the movies all the actors were great but I enjoyed 2015 movie as the best of the three giving Matthias Schoenaerts as superbly played in this roll Carey was great but he fit the roll can't change that Spencer Tracey once said don't let them catch you acting an Matthias did make you believe Oak was him. Thanks enjoyed it!

Do you guys think Cqarey mulligan was right for this role? She was good - very good even, but not like reach in and grab you in the guts like Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet or Anne-Marie McDuff you know. Then I think it would have been extraordinary - like Pride and Prejudice the miniseries.

I really did like Carey Mulligan in this role, I felt moved by her performance. But now that you mention it, I think Anne-Marie Duff would be fantastic as Bathsheba due to her fierceness and intensity :)
