Flint & Tinder Waxed Rancher Review: A Rugged & Warm Work Jacket

Flint & Tinder's jacket lineup just keeps on delivering, and the iconic waxed trucker has been a recent standout for me. Now, imagine taking that awesomeness and giving it a serious upgrade - enter the Flint & Tinder Waxed Ranger. This one is like the waxed trucker on steroids. I have the Wool-lined Trucker and the Rancher. I feel like people overstate the warmth of the flannel and wool-lined versions. The wool is about as warm as a nice medium/heavy hoodie. The Rancher on the other hand really is warm, it's the only one that is in the ballpark of handling the frozen Hellscape of Minnesota winters.

Thank you for the comment! I'm still on the fence between the two. I live in the Netherlands and the coldest it gets here is around -5° celcius or 23° fahrenheit, which one would you recommend, the wool lined or the quilted?

@semvansambeek Without being too convoluted and simplifying the best I can... Wool: -Range: Mild/cool to decently cold - Can do light layering -Below freezing is pushing it for me but that also depends on personal cold tolerance. - Rugged yet stylish. Rancher: -Range: Cool/chilly to very cold -Beefy and warm with more layering potential -maybe a little too warm for mild days. -Less fitted but still forms to you and stays stylish. -No question it's a rugged jacket. Both have a pretty good range so I don't think you'd be disappointed with either. Whichever style grabs your eye more and makes you want to wear it. Hopefully that helps and doesn't make your decision harder.

This Rancher looks great! I have the Freenote Cloth rider jacket and it's incredible and perfect for the climate I live in, but this Rancher is tempting.

Great video, thanks for the review. I own 2 Free Note RJ1 jackets and absolutely love them. They are lined (tho not insulated) but the lining is beautiful Japanese cotton with satin lined sleeves. The shoulder gussets are also amazing. Hope you get to try one, I think you’ll love it.

I have that RJ1, a P&Co Olive, a Thursday and the Kühl RJ1 is the best but I like the Thursday best aesthetically. Thursday probably the closest to the F&T

Got this in black! Love that it's their warmest and with thickest canvas, sizing is funny but i sized down and it RULES. i think a lot about the white version

I own many diff colors of the Freenote riders jackets and they are top tier. Beautiful patina , built tough as nails. I loved them so much , I bought it in 20oz tobacco , rust , black , and tumbleweed and oak ! The fit for me is also the best! Only jacket imop that’s built better is my Ship John’s Wills !

I love mine. My only gripe is that the inside pocket is on the right side. No big deal, but I still go for the left side 9 times in 10. It is the perfect, cold weather compliment to the waxed trucker.

You have to get your hands on a Freenote Cloth Riders. I recently picked up their new 20 oz version and it’s unreal. Also recently tried on the regular, unlined version and it’s also great. While more expensive, they do feel worth the money. I’d go with a Large in your case.

I've got the Rancher (and all the other waxed jackets in the FNT line up). I think the Rancher is me new favorite, or at the very least tied for my favorite with the Flannel Lined Waxed Trucker. I find the Rancher to be a bit more over sized, allowing me to layer on the really cold days. It is definitely my go to on these 20F mornings here on the East Coast of the US.

Which one in the line-up has the corduroy collar on the top side?

@@averagejoe4101 The only FNT waxed jacket in the current line-up with cord top side, would be the Mill Jacket. The Hudson and the Rancher have a liner on the under side. But only the Mill Jack has it on the top of the collar.

​​@@averagejoe4101 From the pictures online it looks like the Natural Seeded color of the Rancher has corduroy on the topside of the collar. Although the pictures also show the inner pocket label saying "Waxed Rancher Jacket" when my tan Rancher's label says "Waxed Trucker Jacket" for some reason. So I don't know what to believe anymore.

I live in the southern U.S. so I don't wear this often. We had snow this week, so it got some use. I have mixed feelings about waxed jackets in general. I love the look, but they are not the most comfortable. Mine still hasn't softened up, so it doesn't flex much. And trying to get it buttoned, agh. Will I get roasted for wanting a zipper? All that said, what you see is what you get: a well-made, nice-looking jacket that needs time to break in. Even if I don't wear it a lot, I am glad i have it when the weather turns.

Huckberry did their thing with this waxed rancher and the flannel-lined jacket. Now, from silhouette alone, judging as best compliments your body type and casual appearance say, for date nights on the town, which jacket do you prefer? With joy I'm looking for something trim and the trucker (small) rides quite high up my waist, so the waxed rancher (small) might work.

Really wish they had a website for Europe to reduce shipping fees like iron and resin, that's one of the reasons what swayed me towards their cruiser jacket instead, even though iv heard the quality of flint and tinder is superior.

I was looking at a Barbour Ashby as a possible winter jacket for me, especially since they can have zip-in liners for added warmth, but this makes me wonder if I should consider the Flint & Tinder instead. Is the quilted lining filled with down or something?
