Have to agree, I came on looking for an explanation because I felt the same, obviously a snell differs when on a hook, but outside of that I see it as a nail knot. Thanks for the clip !

I don't see a difference in the end result, just a different way to tie it

Love my Tie Fast Knot Tyer, it's probably 30yrs old now, been tying my trout fly line this way as long, great video.

Great explanation, great demonstration, and fantastic practicality.

I remember seeing Pallot tie his snell knot and thinking he's trying to re-invent the wheel......he was tying a nail knot but using a slightly different technique and changing the name to snell - but it was in fact a nail knot. I tie a nail less nail knot for my fly line to leader and i have no issues.

I have for years used micro loops to join line and no issues with turn over

A modified Albright where you push several butt section wraps ahead of the doubled fly line is the strongest other than the welded loop. I won’t use anything else for Tarpon:

What weight fly line were you using? I wander if the knot would slip less if you used a larger weight fly line? Or if you matched the mono line to the fly line would the breaking strength/slip point incease as the matching pair increases? I am curious because I believe Flip uses the snell/nail knot for sailfish. Thanks for the video. It seems the two knots are identical.

I lost a golden Trevally with this exact mechanism of failure. Could not agree more with the commentary.

Add a hitch knot at end of fly line and it wouldn’t slip off until it breaks

That is what I do for my hook to line knot I thought it was a snell knot but a mate was telling me a snell knot goes back through the eye of the hook

Looked at it on my phone but isn’t this a barrel knot and not a nail knot - barrel has tag at end whereas nail knot has tags in middle of the wraps

You're thinking of a blood knot. He tied a nail knot.

The problem is obvious, you are using Danco pliers and Flip uses Manley pliers. 🤣 I have no idea if it's the same knot or not but as you said unless you are using really heavy tippet the difference is not of any consequence.
