Spot on about those chamber steps near the valve seat . 2 years ago I did a set of speedmaster 351c heads . I ordered the non-cnc version which leaves the same step around seats . of course I knew there was flow to be gained , so i fixed 1 chamber pretty much like you are going to. put it on a flow-bench to compare before and after. Results were as expected. Big flow increase on "Intake" from off seat to max lift. Exhaust almost no increase. That was expected. Flow going opposite direction. Intake picked an average of more than 20 cfm , more at lower lifts.

I would think a dynafile with the brown then red scotch Brite belts would be good for the chambers where they don't remove much material they would just remove the casting texture, they will especially the brown if you get aggressive but either are way tamer than sand paper. When I did my iron gm heads I wanted to try the cross buffs they look awesome but never got a set. When I did my iron gm heads it was my first attempt at head work time consuming But in the end I had a nice set of gm 993 iron smoggers that make great power. I got them in the mid 90s from arrowhead They had some work when I bought them. I paid for a "bowl port special it was $100 extra and they did a nice job, bronze guides umbrella seals, 2.02/1.60 s/s valves with a reduced diameter stem and,.525" springs and screw in rocker studs option and still priced pretty fair. Then about 8 or so years ago I did bit more work smoothed the pocket and guide bosses, full exhaust smooth and polish and smoothed the intakes with slight texture. When I bought them I wanted the 64cc heads but they were out of cores, I think back then I paid $350 for em but it was around same price to redo a set of stockers just back to oem. On a 355 with em an original Torker intake with a 2" spacer, summit re calibrated 800 q-jet, cast flat tops and a 232°/.480" 108lsa Howard's cam. I did get a set of summit roller top rockers but just reduce wear in the guides. it runs really strong with roudy idle, it's in a 92 c1500 pulls pretty hard for a open chamber smogger headed engine in 4000lbs truck, it's obviously a mild build it maaaay push 350hp with a perfect tune seems years ago popular hot rodding did an almost exact build with the same heads with smaller cam and less head work but had full roller rockers and a better intake the original conventional performer rpm intake and that made around 360hp. but it surprised quite a few people on how strong it runs

So on that 271 hp 302 with the trickflow cam was that whp or chp?? Im basically trying to build something in that range for my son to replace the tired 289 in his ‘67 mustang….also did that trick flow cam work well with the power brakes producing enough vacuum and did you run it thru an auto or manual if auto what stall converter…..i basically have everything you mentioned new in the box ready to be inspected and assembled…..just havent ordered a cam or converter yet!!!! But i have been eyeing that trick flow cam and to hear that you got 271hp with it out of these heads is awesome…..i could dig it!!!

So that was WHP. It’s been a long time now. I had a 5 speed manual in her and the car was only 3,000lbs as it was a 1970 Maverick. Can’t remember if there was a better cam profile out there or not. If I had it to do over again, I would have bit the bullet and gone with AFR heads though.

You should have no problem at all, although, after going through all of that, I would recommend “buy once, cry once”, and get the Twisted Wedge or AFR heads. You will not regret it

Hey, how did the heads work on your set-up???????????

They woke the motor right up. But, if I had it to do all over again, I would opted for AFR heads. More money yes, but worth the extra.
