As someone in the farming community, keeping Roosters that show any aggression towards people is not acceptable. If the guy wanted a pet rooster, he needs to keep it contained in his yard. Roosters of large sizes can have really huge, damaging spurs they'll try to kick you with. Honestly the guy that had the rooster is lucky no one called animal control on it for attacking people in the community.

This was my thought, he let the thing run loose onto other people's property. Where's his charge for failing to contain his animal? If the rooster did nothing and just showed up on someone else's property they'd be well within their rights to shoot it, baffles me that anyone would even contemplate charging the other guy with a felony.

In the case of dogs, the owner is at fault if their dog is not contained properly and runs around attacking people. I understand the damage a rooster can do is usually not as bad as what a dog can, but I think it's unfair that this man is getting a felony charge for defending himself against an animal that wasn't contained properly.

I've owned chickens for years and it is true that most roosters tend to be aggressive. Usually I just shuffle them around with my foot until they give up but its terrifying to people who don't have experience with roosters. When I was a baby my parents had a road island red rooster, appropriately named Red. He was taller than average, around two feet. He hated, HATED, my mother. Was otherwise completely fine. Sometimes roosters, if kept in bad conditions + don’t have hens around, are known to wake up one day completely different and terribly aggressive, especially to people. This was not Red, as the only person he ever hated was my mother. He would go outside her bedroom window, which is on the first floor but high up, and would jump up over and over again to stare at her. If she went outside, he would absolutely chase and attack with full power. If she wanted to get out of a car, she would open and close the opposite car door where he would run to, and then bolt inside while he was confused. It’s not uncommon for roosters to do this to people who have wronged them or something, but my mom never did anything to this chicken. Dude just hated her.

I’ve seen enough court cases of animal violence to tell you that if this gets taken to civil court, this is not going to go well for Jason. As the owner of the pet, it is HIS responsibility to make sure the animal is contained. He knew the animal ran loose in the community and I get a laugh at him saying the rooster “played” with the neighbor’s kids. The fact that James is facing felony charges is laughable. If I was the judge, I’d drop those charges immediately. Jason’s side of the story is incredibly stupid. I grew up on a farm with chickens. Roosters don’t “play.” They are very aggressive and mean. If the kids are throwing rocks at it, they aren’t “playing.” They are trying to get that mean son of a bitch to leave them alone. Jason’s story sounds like one of complete nonsense and wishful thinking. I agree the one thing James did wrong was not communicate about the situation. He should have been the one to call animal control to say he got attacked by the neighbor’s rooster and talk to the neighbor instead of leave it dead in a ditch. To be fair though, I get the feeling James didn’t like the rooster and I hardly think him killing it was an “accident.” When he was swinging the stick at it, he probably was trying to kill it while it was attacking him. Still, if Jason is telling the truth and the rooster attacked him, then he is entitled to self-defense, despite how “small” the animal is.

It's literally all speculation. Animals are completely unpredictable and using force when one even runs up on you should be justified. I punched a lady's dog before it was running straight towards me, turns out it was friendly... but how was I supposed to know it didn't mean harm There's literally nothing on him. If anything Jason should be the only one looked at. The fact James spent anytime behind bars over pure speculation is a complete injustice and a major abuse of our justice system
@justaregulardude895
@justaregulardude895 2 жыл бұрын
It won't go to civil court unless the rooster owner can prove that he lost money from it. Animals are property and are worth precisely ZERO dollars to the civil court system unless the animal was a working animal or a show animal and you lose income from the death of the animal. Nobody gets money in court from someone killing your pet...that's probably why he pressed criminal charges. It's the only way to get "justice" in that scenario.

His is going to attack 100%. I got into literal fights with it and he would always manage to do damage to me. Now that I'm older I know that I could have easily lost an eye. Most are no problem but every now and again you get a Gallo Negro (Black Chicken) which is a term used for the biggest baddest rooster/person there is (Not always but the myth perpetuates that those roosters usually they tend to have black or grey feathers). Texas racoons are something else and for anyone looking to move to Texas with chickens just know you need to build your coop like fort knox and lock it up right at dark every single night and be prepared to kill racoons, foxes, skunks and anything else on sight.

If Jason really did feel that "Big Roo" was a pet then just explaining that he attacked you and then you defended yourself probably wouldn't go over very well. I've seen people lose their shit when a large dog who could really mess someone up would attack people and then they either shoot or hurt the dog to chase it away, they get defensive immediately. "Oh Mr Fluffles wouldn't hurt a fly! He's the gentlest dog I've ever had!" While a child's dismembered leg is dangling from the dogs mouth. Honestly the best way to handle having to kill any animal (pet or wild) is to file a police report, let them handle it, but get them involved from the outset so that they can't use the fact that you didn't call them against you. I've had to shoot aggressive wild animals to defend myself, and the first thing I do is either call fish&wildlife (if it's a wild animal) or the local police (if it's a pet, which thankfully I've not had to do) My family used to have a basset yellow lab mix and a neighbor (not a close neighbor, like 4 miles away) came into our yard one day claiming that the dog had attacked and killed his goats (well our yard is fenced and the dog had stumpy basset legs and was blind as a bat at the time) and he insisted that he watched our dog chase down and maul his goats. The police AND fish&wildlife were dragged into it and they concluded that not only was our dog not responsible, he couldn't have been responsible because the goats had been attacked (fairly obviously) by a bear. Our dog was ancient, blind, and nearly toothless, even if he had managed to "escape" the fence AND walk 4½ miles while blind, he physically couldn't have chased down young healthy goats and torn into them the way the neighbor described. People behave entirely unreasonably when it comes to their pets.

So, speaking on experience of my sister owning chickens and a small rooster, I have to believe James here. Her rooster is small but even it runs at you to attack when you open the hen enclosure or if you get too close to the hens - basically where it feels it needs to protect its area. Even that is scary (got good videos of my brother running away screaming), especially as you just don't know what to actually do. It is also irresponsible of Jason, especially if he wasn't home, to leave his rooster outside. Whenever my sister leaves home, she ensures that her hens and rooster are in the enclosure for both their safety and others - particularly with the other wildlife around. Even at home, she has cameras around the house so can call them back to the garden if they stray into other people's properties. The only bit James could have done is talk to Jason and apologise however even then, it doesn't sound like Jason was in so perhaps he didn't get the chance. Sad for the Rooster but I have to say, Jason is the main villian here if you ask me as clearly just didn't do enough to ensure his Rooster was safe.

From what the dude described, that is pretty much exactly what roosters do when they attack. My family had chickens growing up. Most were hens, but we had a few roosters too. They can get pretty big, and they have spurs that are actually really sharp and can cause real damage. Luckily, our big guy was really chill and didn't mind people or our dogs. We had one that was a smaller breed and was like a quarter the size of a normal chicken, and he definitely had little man syndrome. He was so small though, that when he was getting aggressive you could just lightly scoot him over with your foot. Or if he jumped at you, you could hold out your shoe and he would bounce off

Even if it turns out it wasnt 100% like violently coming at him or maybe hasn’t caused as much damage as he try’s to portray, I still feel it’s pretty safe to say that the rooster did still regularly antagonize people, and if the owner doesn’t have a proper pen / coop for him, with possibly other female hens which he could turn his attention to, as well as most likely stay closer to them to protect his female hens, then most likely this rooster would have been fine and happy. There’s no need to give the rooster full run of the property, to the point that he’s going onto other properties and kids are even having to scare him away! I feel this is totally the owners fault, there are SOOOOOOO MANY simple or small changes he could have made to give the rooster more reason or purpose to stay in his territory, as well as just letting him have a decent enough sized pen area that he can comfortably walk around in without having to wonder the whole property. I really think the guy who accidentally killed it probably didn’t mean to hit it hard enough to kill it, but again like how many of us have knowledge of how hard you can hit a rooster to deter it, but not kill it lol There are just so many factors here that show it was most likely an accident, and even if it was maybe a little too hard of a hit by your neighbour, COMMON there’s no need to press charges to the extent of him possibly facing LEGIT life changing jail time, over an accident/ petty disagreement! Maybe just have him buy you another rooster, rather than drag this crap out in court , racking up bills, wasting peoples time and money, it’s just dumb. Buy him a new rooster, apologize, shake on it, and the owner should then need to take more precautions to keep his pet on his property so things like this don’t have the chance to even occur! If he legit presses animal cruelty charges on this guy, that’s friggen redonkulous, I’m sorry chickens and roosters are a dime a dozen, I know you can still have attachment, but I highly doubt your closely hugging or bonding with your rooster daily like you would a dog. Had the neighbour bludgeoned a dog, with only circumstantial evidence of aggression, then ya, sure, charge the guy then or at least have it looked into, but don’t do this over a rooster man, you’ll have other roosters, I mean the way it was wondering around it sounds like it could have been killed by any random dog, or coyote in the area pretty easy, so I think this is just dumb!

Roosters are aggressive, territorial, and absolutely fully capable of seriously injuring people. By allowing the rooster free roaming he basically allowed the rooster to claim the area as its territory and the rooster then acted accordingly to its nature and patrolled and defended its territory

As a kid my cousin had a farm with a roster that stalked me whenever I was there. It would be staying outside the closet window of the room I was in. I would wake up in the morning to that roster just stating at me. When I went outside he would follow me and change me especially if my older cousins were around who would throw rocks close to it to drive it back a couple feet for a moment.

My gut is telling me there's an element of spite here. I feel like the reason James didn't tell Jason about Big Roo being dead is either because the whole affair was pre-meditated, or in the moment that he realised what he'd done he thought back to all the times Jason has obstinately refused to do anything about the aggressive, territorial rooster and decided not to do the neighbourly thing and tell him. I've lived in neighbourhoods with people who have poorly trained pets like this, in my case just a dog that barked at everything, and the word around the neighbourhood is that everyone fucking hated that dude. Right or wrong, I got the strong sense that if that dog had dropped dead, no one in the neighbourhood would lift a finger to help.

I grew up with a rooster and I can confirm that they are very aggressive and will attack you for seemingly no reason. The best way to deter a rooster is by giving it a little punt. To me it sounds like the guy (forgot his name already) meant to deter the rooster by hitting it with a stick but accidentally struck it to hard. I remember when I had my rooster I used to mow my lawn and it would try to attack the mower. There were even times were the neighbors would visit and the rooster would attack them. It got to the point where we decided we had to get rid of it so we called someone who takes roosters and the day before our rooster was going to be taking away, it got killed by a coyote. I’ll just finish saying that roosters are not only assholes, but it’s a huge pain in the ass owning one. Also I feel like some smart ass who’s reading this is going to say “well why did you get a rooster in the first place”. When you buy chicks, occasionally the seller makes a mistake gendering them and throws in a male because it’s simply not easy to identify their sex when they are young.

Okay, so I'm just gonna throw a rock in the dark here. What stands out for me is the fact that reporters only cover the two main characters. And I do feel like that it was on purpose to squeeze as much content out of this "horrific" story as possible. I'm almost willing to bet that had the reporters interviewed anyone else in the neighborhood, they would have been like, "yeah! F'k that chicken!" And would have audibly gasped in relief at the news of its demise.
