Florida is no different than anywhere else really. The only difference is they have sunshine laws where a full explanation of every police encounter is released online without people having to request it. It’s just really easy to find crazy police encounters which are pretty rare given the population size. You just scroll through the list online that the police upload. If something weird happens somewhere else you’d need to find out about it first hand to even know to request the full police report so it’s harder to stumble across other crazy stories.

@corbiepayne Жыл бұрын
To be fair the only reason the Florida Man phenomenon is a thing is because they have some freedom of information laws that let people access info on your crimes more readily, so if you commit a weird crime in most other places it won't end up in a newspaper but if someone in Florida tries to burn down a house with pasta sauce everybody gets to know about it. TV shows have featured him and there's probably a bunch of interviews on KZbin. Despite being a capable long distance runner I am quite sure if he wasn't stopped by the Coast Guard he would be dead. The Coast Guard has said he would be allowed to attempt his cross ocean journeys so long as he was accompanied by a support boat. He's refused but likely it's due to funding as he's by no means a wealthy man (and he's using up most of his earnings building these contraptions).

@@LexKapatos-hc3di What other people have said about him having this dream is true. An interesting consideration is at what point does a dream/obsession like this turn into a form of mania or mental illness. Obviously these journeys are not safe and this gentleman is aware the Coast Guard will stop him, and yet he spends most of his money from working odd jobs (from working multiple jobs as a cook to working 2 years on a crab boat) building these craft. Conversely the state of Florida continues to allow him to register his creations as "watercraft" which probably convinces him he's as free to head for the open ocean as someone in a 100 foot yacht. He is originally from Iran, and if what I've heard is to be believed, spent several years in jail there for living contrary to the religious law there (suffering torture while in jail). Successfully fleeing that situation, making it to the US, and being granted asylum might also influence his like, uhhh concept of what it means to be a citizen of the world? I feel like maybe they should just let him have a go at it and get it out of his system but at the same time, I have no doubt he would die on the journey or would probably need another costly rescue. He probably just needs a GoFundMe to pay for a proper and safe expedition that the authorities would be fine with tbh but I'm not sure if they'd even let him have another go, with the judge this time forbidding him from getting near the ocean (tough to enforce in some parts of Florida though).

Actually extremely fascinating. This brings up so many questions. What qualifies as walking on water? Does he want to traverse the ocean or does it have to be on top of the water? Does walking mean no propulsion? I guess what he’s been doing is basically the same as floating around on a raft, but i like the original idea. Maybe if the orb had paddles on it so it could steer or something this works, but otherwise I’d wanna hear his own opinion.
@tsc_blt Жыл бұрын
Maybe as a marathon runner his goal is actually being the first man to run the circumference of the globe. Or across a sea. If the walking it the point, maybe a pressurized suit that has an thick air tube leading to a boat at the top to feed air and supplies. Then he can walk the ocean floor and fulfill his dreams. And of course the helmet pov footage would be great for marine scientists. I think if he mapped out a route flat enough to walk, and talked to the right people, this could be a scientific breakthrough. But his hearts in the right place ig.

The classic narcissistic government impulse to regulate everything and make anything unregulated criminal is nauseating.
