Florida shelling during negative low tide is about as good as it gets. The low tides have been in the evening for me so I headed down to Fort Myers Beach to see what I might find during the low tide. The shells have been hiding a bit better than they usually do so I was a little worried I wasn't going to find enough specimens to make a fun video but I had faith, a scooper and a camera and I eventually found tons of great things to share.
Florida shelling is so rewarding because even if I'm not finding tons of great shells, there really always is something to look at and explore.
This Florida shelling trip I also wanted to share a sunset, so not only will be persevere finding shells, we'll see a few hermit crabs and sand dollars and close out the video watching the sun slip below the horizon off Fort Myers Beach.
I brought the scooper but it didn’t really do me any good. I used it to poke a few dark things in the water to make sure it wasn’t a big shell but I could have left it at home because it didn’t help me this time. Oh well. I still plan on being in the water more and eventually that scoop is going to come in REALLY handy.
I hope you enjoy your time with me while you go virtual shelling and I hope you learn a thing or two about the amazing Southwest Florida beaches I visit.

I watch your videos all the time and have learned a lot about shells and critters. Last Monday was a very low tide and my grandson found a special critter and saved it from the low tide. Everyone called it a starfish and I told my grandson it was a seastar and I told him how to pick it up by digging underneath and picking it up with the sand. I’m so happy that I got it on video too. Thanks again for all your videos.

I am so glad I found this channel. I am the one that moved to Connecticut that is disabled. I can’t walk anymore so now I am in a wheelchair. But I miss shelling. If I could get my legs to work I move back to Florida right in Fort Myers again. I love negative tides. It’s so beautiful there’s so many live shells. But I’m like you I always put them back.

While I can't physically take you to the beach with me, I am always thinking about my viewers and I am SO grateful that I can do what I do and share it with others. I will often mention the terrain and how it is to walk where I am because I am very aware of lucky I am to get up and go where I want. My mother was also in a wheelchair so I'm cognizant of others that might have mobility issues. I'm glad I can at least get you shelling with me virtually! xoxo

Hi, Sharmon. Great vid, beautiful shells. Yes, watching the sunset is always fun, and you get to meet great people! My husband & I do the same out on the West Coast (CA) at Corona Del Mar (Newport Beach area in Southern CA). We have met some terrific people. We all bring our folding chairs, a bottle of wine & just sit & gaze; we see Catalina Island in the fairly near distance! And Boy, we see some incredible sunsets (like you do in FL)! Oh, oh, I've seen the "Green Flash" once, wowsers! Thanks for sharing your new found treasures. 😎 🐚

My parents would take us to Florida (or another state with a beach) every summer for two weeks. One year I was out with my dad at low tide (I think it was St Augustine) and we were floating around looking for shells. I spotted a beautiful lightening whelk and snagged it. It was perfect! It was nearly five inches long and still sits on a shelf at my mom and dad's place.

My 2nd video with you shelling, kinda caught you by random, I have never seen the sea in person, I live in Wisconsin so Lake Michigan is my freezing ocean. We only have zebra muscles and the occasional piece of polished glass, but not so much anymore, when I was younger there was more things to find rock, shell and driftwood wise. This was certainly exciting for me. Thanks for posting! I am headed for your night shelling video next ;)

Hey I just saw you're almost up to 10K subscribers!!! That's awesome! How do you keep up with it all? You must have filmed this recently as the tides were low in the evening last week. I almost went but I prefer to get my exercise early... I love those pale ffc's. I have several because they're kind of rare so I always keep them. You were right. Pc of a mossy ark. I've never found an albino ffc, but that just might be one. Congrats! Love the beautiful crown conchs! That were EMPTY! I don't think the purple inside ffc's are that rare also. Can't believe all the moon snails you found! Yeah, that last cc was a winner! Ok, I'm convinced. Need to go to Honeymoon when the tide is low in the evening. Thanks, Sharmon. Beautiful job! xxoo

I think that is an albino conch. It's gorgeous! Another great day at the beach! I do have a question for you. Where did you get your shelling bag? I have looked for some but they are either too small and would only hold up shells or the webbing is too big and shells would fall out. Thanks again!!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
The bag I use I think was originally supposed to be a halloween trick or treat bag! It's larger and stretches and is mesh so it's the best of all things that I need! It had 2 handles, but I cut them and made it into a larger strap I could sling over my shoulder. I see other shelling bags and think the same thing...too small :)

Yes Ma'am! That's exactly where I was. Not on the VERY south of the island but dang close. You're going to LOVE it if you find a place on the south end of the island. Is there any way of telling how old a shell is? Great haul x
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
The bigger the shell, the older they are, but unless it's a certain type of shell I don't think you can tell. Some clams do have ridges in their shells to show how many winter/summers they've survived but I'm not sure you can do that with the gastropods (the single spiral shells). Interesting question though. I'll have to see if I can find out :)

I am on the edge wether that FFC is albino or not. I would lean away from it being a "full" albino if that makes sense? I've found multiple where they were kind of albino, but still had a bit of color to them. I think that's what probably happened there. Great find nonetheless!
