I went to the Penn relays as a kid, and saw Jesse Owens make a quick speech and give the ceremonial baton to the athletes competing in the silver baton series of relays. Early 1970s. Still love this great Meet!

I always find the DMR silly because by the time it gets to the mile anchor, the initial 3 legs don’t matter. Everyone gets into a pack again anyway. Great finish though.

depends. In my conference, it was really only a 3 school fight by the time the anchors got the batons. At a national level, there's less speration of talent

To be able to see which team has guys that have different strengths rather than only 400 runners and no milers. Or have only 800 guys and no 1600 guys

It's the distance medley relay, a kind of relay where each leg runs different amounts of laps. In order they are 1200,400,800,1600. This is different from the 4x4 or the 4x8 but it's still a very fun relay.

In the end as long as your other runners are decent it always just turns into a 1600m

There is also a sprint medley relay: 200m, 200m, 400m, 800m.

Can we stop glorifying Ole Miss for leading only 2 meters of the race. This is the type of stuff that makes these races boring because it incentives these guys to just sit and kick so they become slow and boring until the last 400m and that is not what a true 1600 should be.

@@BeFruitful7 Pre would be crying watching this, and I’d bet if they were running with him in the 70s he would. Same with guys like Stewart Mcsweyn who aren’t just gonna let people run paces that I can run for two laps then decide to pick it up. If you have the ability to run fast why would you give less?

@Baum Squad Yea but he did a Centro and went to the front for the sole purpose of slowing it down not to actually run fast

@@landyncb8751 it is because they end up running a time that just isn’t impressive. He ran 3:59 and he is capable of so much more. I would rather watch a guy run 4:10 and go from the gun than watch him run a 3:59 with only a fast kick.
