Some ideas if you wanted to try for next year... Summer/Autumn flowers: gerbera, geranium, antirrhinum, poppies, cornflower, flaxseed flowers, dahlia, hydrangea, calendula, marigolds, lillies, stocks/delphinium/larkspur. Spring: pansy, bluebells, tulips, daffadils, daisies, hyacinth, iris, crocus and bleeding heart. But great video, I love seeing all the new ideas you have! And its okay to feel your emotions, I feel like content creators always have to present themselves as this idea of perfect but imo I just want to see someone like us 🥰🥰

Sadness is part of the human brain experience and it's not something that needs to be fixed (unless it is so painful that the person starts leaning into self-harm or other-harm thoughts and actions). Especially when we have quiet moments to self-reflect, look around, and assess our feelings about our life and our existence, sadness naturally creeps in. There's a lot to be sad about because there is suffering in the world. But there's of course a lot to be joyful about, like creating and doing self-expressive things with our hands and with art and craft materials. I feel like we need to get away from trying to fix our sad feelings and just know that those feelings are normal and universal, fleeting and yet recurrent. Allow yourself to be a normal human with mood swings and moody days. It's all okay. PS: favorite flowers are lantana, lilacs, roses, hyacinth, and hydrangea. Those might be cool to try!

When I visited Japan a few years ago (after the cherry blossom festivals, as it was cheaper), my favorite flower became the huge pink peonies with frothy-looking petals which I saw in gardens all over. I just fell in love with this beautiful creation. It was happiness in a garden.

Honestly thank you for including the part where you talk about being in a bad mood. I feel like a lot of creators probably feel similarly that they can’t be on camera if they aren’t in a good mood. But I agree that you should absolutely be allowed to show yourself however you are in the moment. You don’t have to be in the best mood to be creative. I also like to just sit in peace doing something creative while I’m not in a good mood. Thank you for sharing that very relatable reality of your life ❤️

100% agree it’s is wonderful to be able to know/see that someone else feels the same way you do. I think maybe sometimes I would suggest a break as from an outside perspective it can seem like people are trying to keep up with their content, as a priority rather than taking care of their health. However this doesn’t sound like it’s the case for you at all! As long as any activity you are doing is still making you a positive way and they don’t add to any negative emotions you are feeling keep doing that. I think it’s so important to listen to what our bodies want. From listening to what she has to say it sounds like she’s doing that.

I really felt your comment about being told to rest. You’re allowed to exist in a bad mood! You’re allowed to simply observe that you are unhappy! We have such a drive to pretend bad moods don’t exist or that it’s something shameful you should “get rid of” ASAP. You are how you are and that’s okay!

10:47 Wendy, I am 56 and you are my mood for the last 30 years. I love that you just said it and I saw your tears were 2 seconds away but it’s not as if you can not function. If you can only be seen when you are pretty, in a good mood and emotionally stable you are not yourself. It’s not only hormones; you are feeling the weight of the world and the worries for the future of your kid. The suffering of people and it’s totally impossible to do anything about it. I think you will do the world a great service by being yourself allways. Teaching your daughter it’s okay to be sad, angry or just something ineffable. Let other people know that there is another way to be than always putting on a mask. ❤ Thank you!

I’ve hosted a crafting meetup EVERY TUESDAY (rain or shine, good vibes or emotionally exhausted) for the last 2 years, and it’s been SUCH a good opportunity to practice being social while also being authentic to myself and feelings. Turns out one can just be one’s self and let others manage their own emotions 🙂 even when I really did not want to go, I’ve ALWAYS left feeling better after than before. Crafting alone definitely helps me to emotionally regulate, but I’m shocked at how much just existing in public and listening to others talk about their problems, projects, aspirations, lives-while they are happy to see me and accept me in whatever mood level of engagement I can give-has been really healing to my inner child who wasn’t allowed to emote without consequences ☺️

It's ok to not be ok. Speaking as someone with depression and anxiety, talking about it helps. It sounds like you have a good handle on being you and how to exist in your world. That's important. It's totally cool to not be in the best mood. I completely get that crafting can sometimes be the best therapy. I'm glad you shared this with us. We really need to normalize not being ok and that being ok. I LOVE the pounded flowers, so pretty. Happy crafting!

I’ve literally never left a KZbin comment before but I felt so compelled by what you shared here that here goes - I just want to support you in being exactly how you are in the moment AND making beautiful things at the same time. Seeing you be open about that makes me feel like it’s more ok for me too, and in the end what’s better than just hanging out making stuff and being ourselves? I’ve always appreciated seeing your process and how it’s evolved over the years (especially as a fellow Asian crafter and new mom who sometimes feels like we don’t get to have parts of ourselves that aren’t tied to productivity), and now I’m excited to see and support you in this new openness!

12:25 I get this so much. Sometimes it's okay and even kind of nice to let the often considered "bad" emotions be there and just work on something. There's something almost cathartic or nice about it, just kind of letting your emotions be there while you work on something that fits with who you are. Idk if this makes sense, but as a person that goes through lots of strong emotions and moods all the time there's just something about this video that makes me feel very understood that I don't have with a lot of other creators. Thank you for being open about it.❤

I get you wendy! Sewing is my hobby (and little side hustle every now and then) and when my contact at work didn't get renewed and management were complete assholes, sewing kept me sorta sane instead of spiralling over what was said. I was very down, sad, frustrated, angry, but sewing helped me maintain some purpose during the day, made met get up and kept me stable whilst doing someting I genuinely enjoy. Kept my mind clear and just take it bit by bit. I get you :)

Only because you sounded worried: If you worry about your mood, try making a diary of how your mood swings. You can add biological stuff as well if you'd like, such as your cycles, what you ate, exercise, that kind of stuff (of course you don't have to) - that will allow you to see if you can see trends, and if you keep feeling worried, you can bring it to your doctor. And thank you for sharing that you're not always in a good mood/your vulnerability.

I’m so glad you decided to put in the part where you discuss your emotions! It’s so comforting to see that everyone feels similarly - sometimes you’re in a bad mood and the best thing you can do is just doing the thing you want to do whilst grumpy/crying. A wide range of emotions are normal and valid - you got this! We believe in you 🌸

Thank you for your honesty, Wendy. Being human includes such a vast array of emotion. None of them are wrong, but how we act while feeling can have negative effects when we stuff or lash out towards ourselves and/or others. Your approach seems refreshing and healthy. There is something so healing about putting some of the moody energy into a creative project. Your final product is beautiful. It can remind you on the other side of the sadness that you are contributing to loveliness and growth in life even in the midst of the hard. Thank you

I'm learning how to feel my own emotions and feel that they are allowed even if I still work that day or spend time with family or friends or whatever. And I'm greatful to you for what you said. I think normalizing that sometimes it's not that something is wrong with the person if they are sad or not thrilled every day and instead it's just good to normalize being a person.

I always enjoy watching someone brace a project full of unknowns. I also enjoy when you share your ups and downs. You didn't have to get specific, but knowing there were heavy emotions making you feel sad was helpful to see. As a parent myself, I sometimes feel like I cannot feel. Like I have to keep it together. My therapist told me once, watching me feel and process is the best way for my children to learn. So I try to lean into that when I'm feeling bad/sad/tired/grumpy/angry/frustrated/exasperated/(any other society labeled "bad" emotion). Processing is good, and showing even a small amount of that process to others is a kindness. Thank you.

Thank you, @withwendy for sharing this fun process of flower pounding with us. I feel like you echoed my thoughts when sharing about your mood. I think society had a messaging for quite awhile that “one should just be tough, hang in there, and push through” if someone was having a low feeling day. Nowadays, the social cultural norm is often to recognize that that can be cruel to someone really burnt out, and so we try to speak against that, offer grace and permission to rest and take a break, to people. But I agree that that conversely can sound (and I am sure this is even more so for someone with a public facing job), like we are not allowed to exist and function unless we are having a sparkly smile on our face. It makes me feel like I got a cut, and someone offered me a band-aid. But it wasn’t the latex-free kind, and they didn’t realize that I have a latex allergy. So, their gesture was an attempt at aid but not the kind I need. In my own life with family, friends, and coworkers, I have learnt that sometimes our listeners need to be told what kind of support we need and desire at the moment. So, thank you for speaking up about it. It’s hardest to put those sorts of things in words when we are not feeling our best, so we appreciate the effort it took. Thank you for letting us know how we can support you!

I’m watching this months later but I just wanted to say I feel the same way. Creating is my safe space. Authentic is a great way to describe it. I feel the most me when I’m creating. Even when I’m frustrated, frazzled, or time crunched. It’s not stress. That creative craziness doesn’t feel like stress the same way that other life things do. The only time I feel the need to step away from a creative project is when I’m actually tired. Like energy-wise. And it’s more because I don’t think or problem-solve well when I’m exhausted so I step away for the sake of the project. So I don’t show up to it later to find the hot mess I created when I should have been resting.

I think hanging out even if we both don't feel our best sounds beautiful. I actually really admire that you're able to be so creative while feeling down - most of the time I get very very tired and just sleep, and sometimes I clean aggressively 😅Probably the healthiest coping mechanism I have is gardening. I always kept myself away from projects that I love when I'm not at my best because I'm afraid to ruin the enjoyment I normally get from them. But I think you have the right idea - next time I will try to just do some nice sewing or knitting and try to enjoy it anyway 😊 Thank you very much for sharing your feelings with us. By the way, the fabric came out beautiful - I'll definitely want to try this in the future!

The part about existing and doing stuff while in a bad/down mood was great. We are human, we don't feel great all the time, and that is normal. Existing and being our true selves comes together with good and bad and great and awful days, even when we don't really know WHY we feel that way.

Hi Wendy. I recently discovered you after hearing your interview on Love to Sew podcast. I'm so happy I found you. I love long form videos and as a fairly new sewist myself, I really appreciate watching mistakes and folks share how they grow and learn. I especially appreciate you in this video sharing about your mood and working through it. I completely resonate with that. Sometimes we need breaks, but sometimes we create beautiful art through those days. Keep doing what you're doing! Consider me inspired!

Wendy thank you so much for being authentically you and sharing your feelings with us! I love that you can say "hey guys I haven't been feeling amazing and I'm not super sure why but I'm gonna do this thing I love anyway." It's really beautiful. You don't have to always know exactly why you aren't feeling your best and that's okay! Just know that even if you're not feeling great, it'll get better. Bo Burnham has a quote, "So today I'm gonna try just getting up, sitting down, going back to work. Might not help but it couldn't hurt" and I think that's kinda perfect. There's no one cure all for those crummy feelings, a lot of times we gotta just allow them to be there and know they aren't gonna always be there, and do what we can to make ourselves feel even 1% better. Keep taking care of yourself the best way you know how, and I hope you can feel safe letting folks know when you're not at 100%, and asking for help when you need a little support.

Hi Wendy ! I’ve been watching you for 5 years or so, I would love you to look into status, it’s an old flower and you dry it and it stays the same colour forever, very beautiful. They’re often referred to as paper flowers. Love your clips ❤

This was a super inspiring video in some many ways. Thank-you for sharing about your emotions… I can really relate. Funny enough, I have been channeling my stress, anxiety and emotions into gardening! The flowers and the way they attract pollinators gives me a lot of joy, but it is ephemeral. You’ve inspired me to try this technique with the flowers that are still in bloom and then write what they are below in fabric pen, maybe as tea towels? We shall see!

I'm always more creative when I'm unwell, strangely enough. In any case, I feel much more the need to do creative things when I'm unwell. If that makes sense. So I agree with your words 🌈

❤ Such a cute apron, love this technique! It definitely seems like something that would be fun to do with kids : let them have free reign to do whatever design they wanted on the fabric and then turn it into some item of clothing for them 😁 Thank you for sharing your mood, I think we should all be allowed to exist in whatever mood we have that day. ❤ Also I say this as someone who has to smile and be nice for their job everyday, with my colleagues we have a way of letting the others know that today is just a day off without having to give any detail or explain ourselves. When we arrive and we have a day off we just say "today is a small jar" meaning that "the jar" will be full pretty quickly and we probably won't have as much patience or energy as a good day, and won't be able to deal with as much as usual (especially in the case of a difficult customer for example). This way the team knows that it doesn't have anything to do with them we're just having a day off. I share this just in case it helps anyone.

I used cosmos which turned out beautifully. Also marigold, petunias and nasturtium. I found the thinner the petal the better the transfer. My favorite one (I made 9 total!) was all leaves , and , dont judge pls its just a plant i challenged myself to grow, the "leaves" of my marijuana plant were absolutely stunning! Another tip, make sure whatever flowers or leaves u are using are dry, otherwise the transfer looks like mush. Thank you for showing how to help make them colorfast. I gave mine as gifts with a warning to not wash lol.

This is so delicate and so lovely. I would like to try flowers that when pounded are orange and dark blue. I like the natural tea dyeing you did. It's ok to not be happy all the time. I would watch a video of you just sewing and a few words to explain what you're doing. Simply doing and being in your feelings. Or whatever kind of video. Cue the montage!
