The bend of the hook will move the articulation point from the point of attachment to behind the bend. So not sure you will get much articulation from a shank. It would mainly add tying area which you may need. If you want a stiffer material back to the bend add Faux bucktail first to keep it from entangling the bend. Great series. Curious to see how the foam comes into it.

Pilot brand "Frixion" erasable pens are the BEST for this. I draw all kinds of sketches for stuff from fly tying to re-structuring the office at work to woodworking. They come in sets of 7 colors. Can't recommend them enough.

If you could only get that excited about your day job, but I digress. I think you new nick name is Brian "Picasso" Wise. It is interesting seeing you go through this process. I need to do it soon because I'm on the shore of Lake Okeechobee as I write this and I have a idea for a fly I need to try, and I only have about 30 more days. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.

Good Stuff Brian! I'd look into taking a minimal approach with the Extension and loose the shank. 50-60lb mono will move just the right amount and will take a lot of bulk out of your hook gap. Looking forward to the next video!

I really don't think I will have issues with needing more room to tie the fly.....the only reason I want the shank is for more movement, the only thing mono does is add "shank" to tie more of a fly on.

Instead of a shank , maybe let's try a mono straight to attach our tail to. We can play with size of mono for flexibility. Similar to Gunnar with the Ahrex hook. My concern is the weight of the shank itself. But let's try it and see what happens ! But keep our options open. Great series. We need more design videos.
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
Options are definitely open. The thing is....Mono-Straights give zero movement, and movement is the only reason I want the shank. I will 'probably' have plenty of room to tie the whole fly in the neck portion of the hook, including the tail and flash. If the shank doesn't work at all--I will just kill it and keep everything on the neck.
@deankrueger7178
@deankrueger7178 5 ай бұрын
@flyfishingtheozarks I just tried one and you are absolutely correct. No tail kick at all...I'm gonna try one with a shank tomorrow, drop in the tank, and see if it will swim. I'm also gonna move and change a couple of materials, ss well. The test tank is the key to success for me for sure. Thanks again Brian.

I like the ideas you have for this fly. I do believe gunner bramer did something similar to your shank idea but he used mono flats as he called them. Might be something to explore. Maybe will give ideas on how to incorporate this element into this pattern. Love the series and am excited to see where it goes.
@flyfishingtheozarks

Thanks for watching! This is super fun. My main thing with the shank is I want that extra movement. The mono-straights will extend the tyable portion of the hook shank, but they are pretty rigid and won't give the fly the extra kick of an articulation point.

A great and thoroughly entertaining series. I suggest you make notes with your sketches, e.g., leader lines with a description, like pointing to the flash, or the hackle, etc. previous commenter suggested color coding your materials is a great idea. I am a bit confused about “the shank”, which you mention a lot, but I don’t recall an explanation about “attaching it” to the hook. You also mention “articulation”, is the “ shank” attached at an articulation point on the hook so it is free moving? At first I thought perhaps it was just a fixed extension of the hook shank to provide a second surface to tie to. Perhaps you could share more though about how the shank is expected to work. Thanks.
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
The shank idea is something that will pop up and be discussed in more depth in the episode where I sit down and tie the fly. I am definitely looking for it to be a moving, articulation point---100%. I only want the shank for movement.

Hello, new sub here, congratulations on the YT work!! Old-timers put the weight on the tippet/leader section (split shot) and for decades never on the fly pattern. Wonder if you guys tried. I did in the NE surf, this is my second season doing so and it seems to work, to me ,a fly without any weight on the shank looks more natural once the rig it’s 100 balance to the actual conditions we deal with in the surf. Another element we should consider on fly design, it’s the cast-ability vs presentation, sometimes , the wind conditions and surf we need to sacrifice one part to make the other one work more efficiently. Thank you for sharing and the good work!!

Might consider tying a mono extension into the shank and tie that extension onto the hook. It will be a little more stiff versus a true articulation but will foul less than an articulation.
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
Really, the only reason for a mono extention is to be able to tie more material onto the hook. All I am looking for is extra movement and mono-straights don't give movement.
@AdrianStruwig
@AdrianStruwig 5 ай бұрын
Hey Brian. Could you not tie in a sparse and flaired bucktail collar after the shank so it acts as 360 degree support. Or you could hang the shank off a mono loop that passes hook bend and just use slightly shorter feathers so the fly doesn’t get too long.
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
I have actually filmed all the way to tying the fly already. Things are shifting a little bit when it comes to how the shank works, and what order things are tied onto the shank. Still not 100% sure it will stay--but things are happening. :)

Have you seen Gunnar Brammer 60 lbs mono shank tie in his weedless swimbait? May work to get that swim you're looking for. every time you talk about that shank i think of this method. I like where this is going, make it swimmy!!
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
The only problem with Mono Straights is they are rigid. They do a great job of adding "hook shank" to be able to get more materials in the fly.....but they don't really move.
@DriftingFlyFisherman
@DriftingFlyFisherman 5 ай бұрын
I see your point it can be a bit rigid. I’m working on a similar bait pattern for pike and musky with the ahrex hooks so will be interested to see how this turns out!

Two things. First, I call bullshit on “not an artist”. You’re past that into being a “designer”. Second, if you want to up your sketching game for developing future flies, check out Design Sketching by Erik Olofsson and Klara Sjölén. It won’t all be relevant, but has some good visual references for how to convey some of the more dynamic aspects of how you want the fly to move. Keep it up; can’t wait to see how you start playing with materiality!

Hey bud take a note from the feathered game changers that Schultz outfitters tie. If you want that movement per say you could tie it on the top then continue the body to the head. The bucktail can be the veil over it to hide it a little way and prevent it from going all over the place. Something to think on

So are you thinking of tying the hackle on a shank first, then attaching that to the hook using a second shank with one end cut off, or perhaps a mono/wire loop? Great video!
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 5 ай бұрын
Exactly. I am thinking the process will be tying the Saddles and some flash on a 10mm shank and attaching the tail shank to the hook via wire. If it works, it will ABSOLUTELY add more movement....I just have to make sure that extra movement doesn't allow materials to foul around the hook.

Mono-Straights will only extend the tyable portion of the hook shank, they don't add extra movement by themselves. A shank will add a true articulation point that moves....adding that much more movement---if it works.

I LOVE Nayat. One thing I have to keep an eye on as a designer that might end up being taken on by a manufacturer is the availability of materials. Nayat is definitely available in small quantities, but when you are looking at tying enough flies that pounds of Nayat would need to be ordered over mulitple colors---things get weird. But I REALLY like Nayat....
