Hi, I wanted to ask you about color blindness. I took the plate test at my eye doctor just to see if I could pass. I got 12 out of 15 wrong. I know the Operational Field Test is an option, but if I fail I can't retake it. Do you know another alternative route I could take?

Interestingly - I posed the question to my PPL CFI as to the route he would have preferred to gain his hours. He was honest with me and stated teaching was not his preferred method. But everyone is different and if you like to teach then going through the CFI route may be great for you. As for myself, I'm a "mission" driven type of individual, so for me it might be a commercial pilot job until I reach that number.

After leaving the Navy, I was a "freight dog" for a little over a year. I built a LOT of night and IMC flying time. Ran all over the midwest, in all conditions and because I had no cattle to haul...could be a little more liberal with the control inputs and power settings!lol! Basically "free" time. After that I did ferry flights and really enjoyed that as well. Moved to GD/Gulfstream and flew biz as well before moving to big iron. Now I'm retired and if I were to go do it all over again, would have done it again in a heartbeat.

I dont know guys, at my flight school, we are barely having any activity. Former CFI's working for big jet companies are coming back so they can have some sort of income. It's bad, I hope I'm wrong, but so far the only pilots that I know that have a job are Cargo and private part 91. I'm grateful that I still have a job as a CFI, but things are not good and I doubt the recovering process will fast. I was a pilot on 2006 and the crisis came, this resembles a lot. It will recover, and It will be quicker. Just make a good analysis before you take the jump, its a lot of money and that will only take you to around 250 hours, from then, like Martin said, its another 1200 ish you gotta put on your belt JUST for you to enter on the race.
@essel23fly4 жыл бұрын
I think right now it could still go both ways where there’s hope it won’t be that bad. But if the airlines really start to furlough early fall then I would forget about commercial flying for a while. If there’s furloughs it’s automatic few years of waiting for movement in the industry. I guess if I was starting right now I would just get the private and maybe share a plane and just wait it out until there really is hope before spending all that money for the ratings only to not be flying. I wasn’t a cfi so not sure how much time they get in a recession, I’m assuming not much.
@J.Halllll4 жыл бұрын
The interesting thing about this economic crash is that it didn't happen as part of the natural economic cycle, so there's a good chance it could bounce back since this was an unnatural shock. On the other hand a recession or downturn was forecasted for some time in 2020 as far back as five years ago, so the two things sort of got mashed together. AND if there's a 2nd and 3rd wave, which is extremely likely based on how people in this country are reacting, we could be in for some serious serious trouble.

@dcxplant4 жыл бұрын
'best of luck kid. Nice vids! After 20 years spent at your parent airline, I'm still not safe from the chopping block. Young pilots take heed: This career is not for the faint hearted. Externalities happen quite regularly, creating turmoil. Most likely you will experience many or all of the following: Furlough, bankruptcy, merger and seniority integration, stagnation, and long term or short term disability (airline pilots must maintain a 1st class medical, it is surprising how easy it is to lose it temporarily or even permanently). Being an airline pilot can be very rewarding, but you better realise that it's never as good as it seems, and never as bad as it seems. One must have a resilient, never give up, attitude and be able to take hits to the chin like a champion boxer. My best wishes to all those junior , and not so junior, pilots going forward.

Currently a flight instructor here in Florida. The time building has definitely slowed down due to COVID-19. I will say it is much easier to log the diversity of flight time requirements for ATP as an instructor, especially PIC time. I think the hardest would be logging night time, but the regs allow you to allot 25 night landings for hours after 20 previous completed night landings. That’s only 75 hours minimum after that to meet the 100 hour night requirement. Love your videos as always Swayne! Hopefully once the industry recovers I’ll be right up there with you flying 121.

@fivestringslinger4 жыл бұрын
After earning my private certificate, knowing that I wanted to build hours, my instructor began putting me in contact with his instrument students who just needed a safety pilot to build their instrument time. This let us split the cost of the rental and allows you to log PIC time for all the time instrument student is under the hood, while they also log PIC time as the sole manipulator of the controls while doing their approaches. Its a fun way to save money, meet other pilots and practice some basic CRM. Just remember that from the right seat your sight picture is completely different on landing and will result in a very awkward landing. Ask me how I know. Cheers!
@jianzhang20944 жыл бұрын
fivestringslinger hey mate, I've also heard that cost share story, is it real that both pilots can log pic simultaneously? Thanks in advance.
@fivestringslinger4 жыл бұрын
@@jianzhang2094 You bet! I even confirmed it with my CFI and the DPE that gave me my check ride. If you are acting as a safety pilot for someone practicing instrument procedures under a view limiter, you as the safety pilot must log the time as PIC. The pilot operating the aircraft while under the hood may also log PIC simultaneously as they are the "sole manipulator of the controls". When the other pilot is not under the hood, you may not log that time as PIC unless they have given you the controls. To act as safety pilot you must hold the appropriate certificate and qualifications. It's also important to make sure you add the other pilot's name and certificate number in your log entry and make a note that you were acting as safety pilot. Also add your name to their log as well with the same note. That was the advice given to me by the DPE. He also strongly cautioned against logging "SIC" (second-in-command) for aircraft that do not require a second crewmember, such as the 172 or most GA aircraft. Good luck!

Pretty informative video especially for people new to aviation. I got all of my flight experience banner towing. In my opinion it’s definitely one of the more difficult routes but also the most rewarding. I’ve known quite a few airline pilots who built up all of their time in more traditional ways such as instructing. Most of them go on to become safe and successful airline pilot but there’s always a handful that slip through the cracks and never become truly skilled pilots. I cannot say the same of pilots who cut their teeth towing banners. I guess something about cruising around at 500ft on the edge of a stall makes you a good pilot.

Crazy time for such a video. Most commercial pilots at the moment are very happy if they keep their job, there won't really be anyone new getting to a legacy for at least 5 years.

Even though I am not a future pilot, these videos are really well done and interesting for those who just want a little behind the scenes of the airline industry. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Swayne, I'm still early in my journey but I was thinking of being a bush pilot for a few years before stepping up. Thanks for your video and taking the time :)
