@@harvardh Man, that is too good of a question. Honestly, I think I had to buy one, since I've wanted a Type R ever since the Civic Type R came out in Japan. I wish Honda would have made it just slightly better, but that's ok, I've taken it apart and improved a lot of it recently. I haven't really had any transmission issues in my 2019, only time I get a grind is when I did not have the clutch in enough. I noticed 1st to 2nd doesn't like to be rushed when cold, need to let the gearbox get warm before you drive on it hard.

Definitely true and usually driver error. When it happened to me it was either cold or I was too quick on the clutch and it wasn't completely down. 1st and 2nd I agree do not respond like the rest of the gears when you don't press the clutch all the way in.

This. I grew up driving manuals in the uk and I’ve never had the gear grind - he’s just using the clutch slightly wrong.

All my cars have been manual. When I first bought my Type R I thought the second gear grind was a transmission problem, cause I was changing gears the same way I did it with my previous cars. but 2 years later owning the Type R I do understand that the grind appears when I am not clutching at the right time or I want to slam the second gear trying a super fast shift. First to second gear has to be a slower calculated shift.

In the UK my March 2019 registered FK8 at one year old & 7000 miles does not suffer from gear grind, has no rattles, the brakes occasionally squeal in cold weather when feather light braking to a stop & the Polished Metal metallic paint, which had Autoglym Lifeshine paint protection applied when new, does not show any scratches whatsoever. To drive round any brake squeal I mark a spot to stop & do not feather the brakes, so just stop a bit more abruptly. No problems with the wheels so far. I did catch a rear wheel on a concrete kerb turning sharp right at 30mph but dealer checked wheel & it is true. I have had the spare wheel fitted which still leaves a good amount of space in the trunk/boot. I much prefer driving both previously owned FK2 & current FK8 more than any of the three S2000s' previously owned (two 09 reg & one 03 reg) & rate the gear change with rev matching always on, when warmed up, in the FK8 better than S2000. I find seats in FK2/FK8 are more comfortable than 09 reg S2000s' & same as 03 reg S2000, which had more comfortable seats than the 09 reg S2000s'. I did not find any problems with the paint on the S2000s', the 03 & one 09 one were six years old when moved on. The roads where I live, except for few places, are in generally good condition . If the road conditions are generally poor & have potholes then the FK2/FK8 are not suitable even in comfort mode. Both FK2/FK8, as reported, & from experience the S2000 are no good in the snow. Fortunately it does not often snow around Cambridge but if it does then I'd use my wife's CRV.

Having owned my '18 FK8 for almost two years, I can vouch for the thin paint. Looks good- but chips easily. Brakes? No issues. Gear grind? Not really. Maybe 2 or 3 times tops, since I bought it. Wheels and tires? Have replaced all four tires at least once, and repaired one wheel. But still prefer the feel and look of the stock setup. Rattles? Not that I have noticed. Nor were there any on my '17 SI even after 52,000 miles. The Type R has about 30k on it. The thing to watch out for that should be included is the turning circle - large at 39.5 feet- which can result in curbing the wheels if you are not careful on a right turn. And make it harder to park or pull out of a space. But once you adjust to that no biggie. Would I recommend this car? Oh yeah.

I have a 2019 (bought 8/2019) and thought it was me at first with the shifting (coming from an 06 WRX) and had to learn to granny shift 1st to 2nd. Annoying! Immediately got 18” 57DRs which are fantastic, would cringe every time I hit a pothole with the stock 20s. I’ve had a few rocks in the rotor guards, one time it was really bad I had to pull over at work and thought I was dragging something. Installed rally armor flaps after watching your vid, that’s helped my front door paint. Immediately wrapped the front end of the ride and ceramic coated to protect the cheap paint. Tons of rattles, but it’s a $37k race car, what do you expect??? Wouldn’t trade it for the world though, finally installed the PRL HVI and sounds fantastic, just got Hondata and getting ready to install that tomorrow, many more mods to come!

I was a bit surprised by the problems i've had. My FK8 air conditioning failed twice, the second time it failed 5 days after they fixed it. I basically had 5 days of aircon the entire summer. In Romania Honda is not very popular and people are on vacation in the summer so it took 2 weeks just to schedule a check plus another 3-4 for the parts each time. Then a metal collar opened up and broke that attached a turbo to intercooler hose. I lost all power getting off from the motorway, good thing i was only 20 km from home. It's surprising considering everything i've heard about how reliable Honda is.

You just need to use the transmission properly; have had absolutely no issues in mine - you’re just slamming the gear in too roughly and not pressing the clutch far enough. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the transmission, abuse any gearbox and it will have issues. The sound in your example was you not pressing the clutch enough and the car was fighting you going into gear - happens in every car, learn to handle a manual😁 Never had a rattle🤔

Interesting video. I was impressed when I picked up my new 2018 Sonic Grey FK8 (RHD) at how solid the dash was but now there's a rattle/squeak from the dash just right of the binnacle that I am having difficulty locating. Might have a look at the pillar trim, now you have mentioned it. Never had any brake issues, but now and again a stone gets trapped against the metal shield behind the wheel/Brembo and boy does it make a noise, especially in reverse. Paint seems good and is now under TW Ceramic Spray coating. 20' wheels do look good but 30 profile rubber and pot holes, of which there are many in Scotland's back roads d are a big worry. Gearbox is a bit stiff/sluggish in 1 & 2 with cold oil but does ease off with temperature. My biggest gripe is the Infotainment screen. Give a rake of push buttons any day.

Good video. Disagree with the transmission point, seems like it's a US thing. We don't really get that in the UK. Wheels absolutely agree, literally just collected mine from a refurb, near impossible to do and expensive. It's very rattly, if you're coming from a VW or German car you'll notice it even more. I just installed a loud exhaust to combat them :) paint is also very easy to chip. Oh the breaks too but the heatshield behind the the disc traps loose gravel and can sound like a transformer, you'll crap yourself when thay happens, thought the wheel was falling off.

I'm so happy I did it. the type-r is good if you're going to the track a lot it's not a good daily driver. The seats are uncomfortable unless you're 120 lb. If you go over a pothole feels like the whole cars going to explode. And it sucks in the snow if you happen to live in a snowy place. I also think it's overpriced and I overpaid for it and I blame myself for that.

Incredible fast on the track and decent on daily basis. I mean 34 to 37k € and u have some kind of a race car not compareable to any golf or seat or whatever.

You ever very quickly shift into 2nd and maybe even 3rd? Like the way drag racers do? I've only had one gear grind in my 19 and it was when doing that. I've had tons of 4th great lockouts. Mostly when downshifting. Only once upshifting

Put a camera back there to see where it’s coming from, or start tapping around to see if you can find it

It’s the drilled rotors that’s making the squealing so bad. I think Honda replaced it with a 2 piece non drilled/slotted rotors for 2020 and 2021 for the general public to minimize the squealing issue.

So to sum there isn’t any real problems, still yet to find any single reason why this car is not the best hot hatch available, style is subjective......

I am trading my 2018 ctr to a 2020 ctr champ white. I wont be getting into a 11gen ctr until 2023 or buying a tesla performance in 2024 when they have a 500mile range.. i will never invest in ppf either. too old to keep cars 3 plus years... i dont pay for tax title to regester so this is my excuse to trade up. so next week my 2020 msrp will be in my hands
