I’ve completed 7 hard track days in the heat here in Miami and my car has been amazingly reliable. My FL5 is all stock except for Castrol SRF fluid and Project MU pads. I would recommend to do the pedal dance before each session to deactivate the VSA completely, also remove the under-hood rain guard panel.
@zacharymchugh83726 ай бұрын
What's the benefit of removing the rain guard? Just more air flow?
@FlyinGato6 ай бұрын
I’ve watched your vids in Miami, gives me hope the FL5 addressed the overheating issues. The FIRM is a tough track with few straightaways to cool anything down, super tough on breaking systems

Hey Elias, got your question this time. Only changing the fluid in the container and not flooding the original out may not have been the best thing, boiling point and chemistry maybe? But overall it holds out so well. Happy you found the FWD fun again.

Yea I thought I could get away with it, at least it was worth a try, and we still did a bunch of laps!

Love the video and all your previous vids on the FK8. I own a 2017 FK8 which I got brand new in 2017 #224. I have done a few Auto Cross sessions at The FIRM and trying to muster some courage to do my first track day ever since my wife bought me a track day 😅 (She is my Daily). I have watch many of your videos on heat issues many and planning to cut my grill to a little bit more air flow. Do you think adding shims to my hood or removing rear weather strip will help also? Would you have kept your FK8 if it wasn’t for the heat issues?

Sweet ride! I've been out of the loop. Is that your new fl5? 😮 Also long time no see! 😎 I would of been curious to see how it would of performed with the stock fluid. What does the Castro fluid do to help with the breaking? I'm not to well informed on that.
@FlyinGato6 ай бұрын
welcome back! Yes, it's my new FL5 Type R! Castro SRF is a much higher temp brake fluid, won't start boiling when it gets a little hot like factory fluid. If your brake fluid boils, you lose the ability to brake.
@twinkiissb6 ай бұрын
@@FlyinGato oh wow, thank you for the knowledge. I will definitely keep that in mind. Beautiful car and awesome choice of color! I can’t wait to see more content on your new type r! I still remember when you got your fk8…time sure flys lol

Interesting video. Personally, im not seeing the issue with the factory pads not being up-to-task for tracking. I've been tracking for 20 years now and I've never ran a track pad on my car when it wasn't on a track, nor would i wamt to. The car should have a brake pad designed specifically for daily driving and another set dedicated for tracking only. It would be like expecting an All-Season tire to be excellent for daily driving and at the track. Not possible. A reliable, great performing track pad like you seem to have expected this car to have come with will never be good for daily driving. Your video proved exactly what i was expecting and why ive always employed two sets of pads. Other than that, glad to see it out at the track!
@psewgobind6 ай бұрын
I was expecting engine overheat vs brake overheat. I suspect you'd need traction control completely off to manage pads. (Requires a button click while in custom mode in my EN while TypeR may need song and dance)... This track looks nicer than your first track day in FL8 and looking forward to you putting new Type-R through the wringer.
@FlyinGato6 ай бұрын
Appreciate your thoughts, so far the engine hasn’t had any heating issues. The FIRM is very tough on brakes, since there’s little opportunity to cool them down

Interesting comments on the "fun" CTR vs "serious" ZLE. Do you think it's partially a seat time and comfort level thing? Also do you think an NA V8 SS 1LE would be more of a middle ground? I'll be living the FWD lifestyle for quite some time still, but just curious! Glad you're back 🍻
@FlyinGato6 ай бұрын
The ZLE is honestly too much car for the casual track day, it’s a monster, up there with the newer Porsche GT3s, a modified GTR and the fastest corvettes. I’ve also discovered I’m a FWD guy, I prefer trail braking like mad into a corner, and using the throttle to straighten out.
@FlyinGato6 ай бұрын
Oh, and the SS 1LE is the performance car bargain of the century, I did a video on one, search for it on my channel

So you did not do a flush with SRF? I am going to the track in a couple weeks, going to do a flush and change to SRF and then front track pads. Will probably do rears later but keep stocks in the back for now.

Why are you revving up between upshifts? Are you not lifting your foot all the way off the gas as an attempt at squeezing out more speed, or did a previous car have flat-foot upshifts (that this car doesn't have)? It's not going to help with speed much (if at all) and will absolutely kill your clutch prematurely since you're slipping it hard on every upshift under engine power. You should lift your foot all the way off the gas pedal before your clutch-in releases at the grab point, and then time your clutch-out to "catch" the revs as they drop to match the next higher gear, then back on throttle. If you time it right there should be no driveline shock, no head-bob, and no clutch slip/wear whatsoever. So much easier on the machine.
@FlyinGato4 ай бұрын
I'm glad you noticed that. I was not keeping my foot on the gas pedal at all between shifts, what you're noticing is a little bit of throttle lag, mostly there to reduce emissions.
@ixD94 ай бұрын
@@FlyinGato Hmm, that doesn't look like rev hang. If you rewatch it, it's definitely revving up between upshifts (not just hanging), which definitely wouldn't be done for emissions reasons. It could be that you're lifting your foot but not all the way so the throttle is staying a little cracked. Definitely try to get your foot entirely off the throttle between shifts. Your clutch will thank you!
