It sucks that the Navy doesn’t give you a choice. I heard that they purposefully give those that either fail, quite, or get medical discharges the most soul crushing and depressing jobs in the fleet on purpose. They call it, “Chipping Paint.” 😢

Marine officer here: first off, great channel, great video. One thing to note about MARSOC is that you can’t enter right off the bat; you have to do a tour in the fleet first. Recon does offer a contract where you can enlist and go straight to the schoolhouse. Tattoos *may or may not* actually be a dealbreaker. Waivers are available in direct proportion to your desirability as a candidate. Also, we all eat crayons out in the open, no shame in that game.

For all you aspiring 18X’s out there, in the event of a failed SFAS, you may (and probably will) be reclassed to the needs of the Army. That means if you fail SFAS, you may be reclassed to anything else not of your choice. That means in-demand jobs that most don’t want i.e. mechanics and cooks. If you want to get after it, do so, but be prepared for what the future may hold.

Strongly recommend those coming out of HS thinking about a SOF career to take a full year post school and do nothing but soul searching and physically and mentally preparing prior to enlisting. As an officer, you have ample time over four years to do this. Many candidates don't make selection more so because once they're in the process they have an epiphany and realize a SOF career is not really what they wanted all along...

@@AFGixxeR88 I’m about to be 19. You should decide what you want to do but no theres no typical ages for Rangers but you should pick what unit you are more interested in based on how they work, how they train, what they train in, and most importantly what they do. The basis is Rangers are more direct action and conduct raids and CQB, and recon. Green Berets can do the same thing but are masters of unconventional warfare and conduct Foreign Internal Defense and train rebel groups to fight against an insurgent group and such. Just do your own research and find out what you want to do. You could always do both but at different points in your career. Such as being a Ranger first and then go down the pipeline of Green Berets.

Hey Buck, I was in BUDS class 323 and DORed. When you drop from the Seal program you go to needs of the Navy. You just get given a random job. After I dropped I was forced to be a Logistics specialist for 4 1/2 years. Basically staring at a computer in a wear house. This is solid advice your giving. Wish your channel was around when I was enlisting. I'm actually currently transferring transferring to the army for this very reason and still pushing for special operations. It didn’t matter if you were half way through your physical therapy or not. After being dropped they offered me the jobs that no one else in the navy wanted. If you get hurt you have to wait a minimum of 2 years before you can return to any NSW pipeline. I got out of the Navy later on, and now I’m joining the Army to go to RASP because I want to be in the 75th Ranger Regiment.

My 2cents from a retired 18D 20thSFG(A). Again this based on my experience. I'd say go national guard SF if you happen to be in close proximity to a unit(did'nt matter to a lot of guys that just flew in for drill) . Once your tabbed you can always go on active duty with one of the groups if you desire. I went through the Q course in 1986-87. I pursued a career in the Fire dept which I retired from with an awesome pension after 30 years of service. During that time I deployed on multiple JCETs throughout central/south America plus whatever schools I wanted. The GWOT came around and I did 2 OEF and 1 OIF deployments plus multiple JCETs that 7th group couldnt commit to at the time. Now I am very blessed to be receiving 2 pensions FD/Army. With that said, If active duty is what you want I'd say go Ranger RGMT. Keep in mind that now the op tempo is not what its was during the height of the GWOT.

I went into the Navy with a SWCC contract. I didn't do any meaningful preparation, and surprise surprise, I promptly dropped and ended up in the fleet. I didn't really care because I actually liked being on a frigate and sailing all over Europe & the Middle East for a few years, but a fair number of SEAL washouts ended up there too. The biggest problem is that on a ship like that, there is no way to really train, and due to perpetual crew shortages, the command did everything in their power to prevent guys from going back to NSW. So pretty much they would get stuck for an entire enlistment on the ship, and would only try again if they got it as part of their re-enlistment. Out of about 6 guys who'd washed out of NSW and ended up on our ship, none ended up returning that I knew of.

Worked/trained with SF guys at Campbell and Okinawa and they just blew me away with their professionalism and intelligence. Never worked with better "trainers". It was obvious that their job/role/mission required a level of maturity that you just don't get with an 18 year-old. These are the small details that people need to understand when joining. I don't think there's a better job for a young, sharp 18 year old 11 bravo than going 75th ranger regt or maybe marine corps infantry. Grow up/mature a little bit, sharpen those skills and then put in your packet for SFAS. Just an opinion.

Not only do you have to be Super Sailor with pins, collaterals and stellar evals in a job you’ll probably hate; if your Year Group isn’t open then all your hard work will be for nothing. As a Navy Vet I can tell you everyone who washes out of SEAL, SWCC, EOD, ect. get sent to the fleet as an Undesignated meaning they dont have a Rate( MOS ). Generally what this means is those sailors will typically get attached to either topside or they will get attached to a Engineering rate with the GSM's. Boatswains mates kind of do the up keep on the ship itself, painting the ship in dock ect. GSM's work on the Turbine engines of the ship, from either of these positions if the sailor like's what they're doing they can Strike into those rates or they can try to strike into another rate that falls into the 2 categories either Fireman or Seaman. The Navy can be a bit confusing with their rates and what they mean. Basic break down of the initial designations would be Seaman, Fireman, Airman, Dentalman, Hospitalman. Seaman are your what's considered your topsiders, BM's, OS's, CS's, IT's CTT's ect. These rates do not normally work in the engine rooms. Fireman are your engineering department such as MM, DC, HT, MR, GSM, GSE ect. These rates do work a lot in the engine rooms. Aviation and the others are kind of self explanatory as for what they do, I never ran into anyone Undesignated in the other 3 designations however I'm sure its possible to choose any of the 5 initial designations to explore the kind of work you're interested in before striking into a specific rate. I got out in 2016 so im sure things have changed and what I've said may not be 100% accurate but over all this should at least give someone the basic ideology for what happens when you fail any of the Naval Spec-War pipelines. Also this is for an enlisted sailor who fails a pipeline, I have no idea what happens to an officer if they fail.

Army Rangers seem to want to be on the front lines and win the war. Others just seem to do it for themselves or want to stay away from front line combat. I remember seeing a Ranger E4 with 2 deployments under his belt and a Ranger Tab and he hadn't even been in for 2 years yet. Those guys are very experienced and knowledgeable. I'm in the medical field and so much of what we know comes from experience with the Rangers. Equipment, battle tactics and much more come from them.

I worked at MARSOC as a contractor for almost 2 years in the 3rd Raider Bn. MARSOC has a LOT of ex SF guys like me there as contractors and GS civilians to help train this young unit. Most of those Marines were ex Force Recon. They were some of the most intelligent and competent warriors Ive had the pleasure of working with. I found they put the SF teams to shame in a lot of areas. MARSOC adopted a mission set and organizational structure modeled off of Army SF focused on UW and FID. They dont do floats like Recon.

There are a LOT of ex-SF guys working at MARSOC as DoD contractors and DoD civilians as instructors and in staff positions. I worked in the S3 section of 3rd Raider Bn as the Special Activities Manager. That was a DoD contract position. These SF guys, like me, work at MARSOC because we are experienced and want to teach this relatively young SOF organization to be successful as a SOF unit in the SOCOM family. The MARSOC Marines, MOS 0372, are referred to as Critical Skills Operators - not the ex-SF contractors or civilians, dipshit.

Some thoughts on water one time I fell through the ice on a frozen pond in coveralls and boots, which probably weighed another 80lbs wet, i was alone and I can tell you every bone in your body will tell you to get out, you have maybe 20min before hypothermia sets in, and you can lose all your muscle control. Your brain will do a very fast situation assessment and come up with a plan. I crawled out breaking ice on the way until I hit thicker ice to climb on top. If you want to simulate this pour 15 gallons of ice into a bathtub, fill with cold water, try laying down in it for 10min or more, have a friend in case it gets you , but see what your mind says to you after a while, it sends some pretty strong advice about rapid exit from the situation

Keep your mind open on what you really want. “ you choose your rate you choose your fate” But if you have your heart set on it get your name on the ME-A school list as soon as you get to your unit. There’s also ME-RAP now which is an accelerated course to get that rate. You have to get BTM qualified to get to that a-school though so make sure you request a unit where they do LE on your dream sheet while in basic. Best of luck dude. Lots of perks in The CG compared to the other services but it’s no cake walk.

@@FNGACADEMY Couple of things - would also mention that MARSOC Raiders have a maritime focus like Navy SEALs. Which is part of the mission set, legacy and tradition of the Marines.. MARSOC Assessment and Selection is a 21-day smoker and does puts emphasis swimming, running and rucking. ITC is nine month program. This is longer pipeline than Army Rangers and their mission set is closer to Army SF. Like SF they cover UW, and get foreign language training. Unlike SEALS they do more than DA and SR. A critical point that is different than other SOF units is MARSOC Raiders do NOT have a civilian to MARSOC operator pipeline. Unlike Rangers and SF there is no Marine version of an Option 18X (SF Baby) or Option 40 contract for civilian to Army Ranger. You have to have service time in the Marines before being considered for to be operator in MARSOC, this applies to both enlisted and officers. Sorta old school like how SF used to be before baby SF program was stood up. For MARSOC a more mature operator is preferred so no civilian to Raider contract. Become a Marine first and get squared away, be ready and prepped for the MARSOC schoolhouse A&S. A portion of MARSOC does come from the Force Recon side which was their special operations (capable) unit prior to MARSOC being stood up. There is a civilian to Marine Recon contact. So one could be civilian and go Recon Marine and eventually apply to MARSOC. Just no civilian to MARSOC operator contract. One last suggestion is give some love to SARC - Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman. These are Navy special operations medics attached to Marine Recon and MARSOC (and sometimes DEVGRU). They take the SOCM short course. Experienced SARCs also do take the 2nd half of the 18D course later in their careers.

Great video. Hilarious intro lol. Currently in process of Med boarding due to back injury sustained while in the Special Forces pipeline. Came in as 18xray and had to go to selection twice to make it happen. Was in the SFQC as an 18B student. After not getting selected the first time I received a 6 month return date but I did NOT get to stay at the school house of stay an 11B as my primary MOS. I tried but it didn’t happen and I got reclassed to 19D and was shipped to Germany with the 173rd. Eventually dropped my SFAS packet went back and got selected but I was very very miserable during the entire reclassification process and wasn’t doing the job I signed up for. That’s not only my experience but many of my fellow buddies had the same fate with getting reclassed to MOS’s like cook, parachute rigger, and anything under the sun the Army needs at the time. My understanding is retaining your 11b if you don’t make it through SFAS depends on the needs of the Army at that time. I maintained the 11B mos on my ERB but my primary MOS is 19D. Just some current info for your listeners.

I think the Navy is the one that gives you any job available if you don’t have a prior RATE.

@@AmorFatiMementoMori inb4 "technically navy" but the Marines do the same thing (to an extent). It isn't even just Special Operations either, if you have issues in the intel school, for example, you'll get reclassed to what ever whacky MOS (off hand I've known dudes who dropped from intel and got reclassed to financial management, admin, and radio operator). If you go in with a recon contract and fail, it's the same situation. Whatever they need and want you for at the time you get reclassed to (got to meet a few recon drops on their way to MOS school. A few did go to infantry however). Now as far as I know, Marsoc is different in that you need to already be an established NCO before you can even go to selection, so if you drop at that point, you'll just return to the MOS you previously had. I've met a couple who went to A&S and failed but didn't really pick their brain about it. I've also met a few who served with Marsoc and are extremely intense dudes, but they talk more about how to succeed rather than what may happen if you don't

I went through the Special Forces Training Group from Sep 68 to graduation Aug 1969 and a month later I was in the 5th Group, IV CTZ Mobile Strike Force out of A-401. Back then there was no SFAS when I showed up at Ft Bragg after Jump School this guy in shorts and fly flops telling us to draw sheets and a blanket. Also be at the first formation 0630 when you guys will start Phase 1. But I was on the wrestling team at Texas A&M so I believe that I could have passed SFAS. I thought I was on my way to OCS with a GT-126, but after my Infantry AIT at N. Ft Polk; the FSG told me that I was going to FT Benning Jump School. I was in shock, I passed the teat for OCS but I was told too bad dude. I ran to the Orderly Room and asked the 71L to pull my 201 and there the first page was my change of orders. Jump School with further on orders to Ft Bragg to start the Special Forces Training Group. When I arrived at Ft Bragg I asked to have a meeting with the Training Group CSM. I told him about my contract to attend OCS; he advised me to not go down there. I responded that I was an Army Brat and dreamed about leading a platoon in Combat. He smiled and said, “stay here and if you graduate ask for the 5th Group and after you arrive ask for the Mike Forces, you’ll command a company, a company of indigenous soldiers but a company nonetheless.” I stayed graduating Aug 2, 1969 and after graduation I was in a formation for Group assignments. When he said my name he then said 7th Group. MSG Howell dismissed the formation but I stayed in place. MSG Howell walked up to me and asked if I had a problem? Well yes I responded, “I want to be in the %th Group!” Howell asked me if I knew where the 5th Group was located? I smiled and said yes RVN. But why not the 7th? Back then there was a saying going around ‘Better Dead then Red (Flash)’ plus I don’t want to paint rocks white or cut grass. So he erased the 7 and wrote a 5 and said, “son pack your shit you’re on your way to the Nam. I arrived in the Nam Sep 17, 1969 and when I finished the COC on Hon Thre Island I was standing in front of a desk to receive my assignment. The SGM asked me where I’d like to serve and I responded CCn, CCC or CCS. He said that my Top Secret classification wasn’t yet approved and if I had another choice. I replied, “anywhere but in the Rear with the Gear (REMP). Now he was pissed off and said I’m putting you in the Mike Force you’ll be WIA or KIA within 6 months. I smiled and as a young Turk said C..O..O..L. I spent 3 months on the B-40 team and Imbegged Maj Bridgewater almost everyday to send me to a team. NO and stop asking. But in Dec David Soucie was badly wounded and he was the only 05B on the team. I was told to report to Maj Bridgewater’s office. As I walked in he said , “well I have to send you to A-401 to replace SSG Soucie because you are an excellent 05B and you’ll be replacing Soucie. when I arrived at A-401 no one said a word to me and after 3 days CPT Mike (ret LTG Michael Canavan) told Riley Lott to get his company ready for a 30 day op and to take the kid with him (me). WTF, I hadn’t had time to read the Team SOP. After the 30 day combat op where I simply followed Lott’s lead; fired in the same direction and watched him and acted like him; because he had been in the Mike Force for four consecutive years. When we returned to A-401 I took a shower, shaved and put on new Tigers then walked into the Team Room. As soon as I entered I was met with a cold beer and told to sit down with other teammates and it hit me that I didn’t have a reputation. Lott told the team that I was solid and never showed fear of froze during the spradic contacts that occurred. I felt ten feet tall and when Lott left when his year was up I was given command of his 43rd Company with 112 Cambodians and I was still an E-4 SPC 4. I went on another 4 trips to the field with my company and his replacement SGT Skogland also a Team Medic. Best fucking job I ever had. When I returned to the states Sep 16, 1970 I enrolled in the University of Texas, Austin and graduated May 5, 1974 on the GI Bill. Once my career got started I joined the 12th Group Reserves it was a home for 5th Group Vets and when the 12th was deactivated in 1993 I was the 18Z of ODA-1256; now that was the best job I ever had.
