Was looking for exactly this - a succinct yet thorough video that plays the difference in audio quality between different covers, and explains what the trade-offs are. Thanks!

I watched a few of these and your delivery is Pro - Thank you. You use a plain Mic to benchmark and then comparative tests in a controlled environment and all measured, not guessed. Well done!

Good comparison! Foam and felt dampen the highs, but in many cases this is a good thing (for emphatised condensers ie.)

This is a great video. I ordered a Deadcat a few days ago because I *know* I need one for the stuff I film but I appreciate your testing. Subbed!

Spot on dude - just got a foam wind shield and dead cat for my Zoom H6. I'm heading out for a trip where I'll be doing recordings outdoors which was pretty much impossible before hand, and was wondering which to use in what scenario. I'll be defaulting to the foam, but if it's extra windy I'll switch to the dead cat. Thanks for the brief but in depth testing my man ✌

Dead cat? You have to wonder which cat hater gave it that title. About the demonstration, this was a good one. The controlled environment allowed for consistency in testing. Thanks !!

Very helpful. Is there much of a difference in brands of deadcats? I'm considering either the official rofe or a third party, which is obviously cheaper.

Very helpful thank you! Just bought a Rode VideoMicro Pro Plus and wondered why in addition to the high pass filter, there was a high frequency boost when often boosting those frequencies would risk making things sound bright or harsh...perhaps that high frequency boost is meant to help offset the HF loss that the windscreen and especially the deadcat introduce? Since I'm already in it for $300 for the mic, I might as well spring $40 for the deadcat and try it out.
@JosephAlanMeador Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this it was a helpful comparison! I record music outdoors and have achieved decent results with foam, though if it's too windy I do have to postpone recording. I haven't tried deadcats yet but I'm concerned that would muddy the high end a bit too much for my tastes.

I wish I could hear the difference behind the voiceover. Do you have any videos while you're talking into the mic along with the fan?

I’m trying to get around wind noise when recording outside audio. I’ve experimented with low cut filters at all frequencies, finding that i can get rid of distortion with lowcut at 200hz+ , but then my vocal audio becomes too tinny and loses it’s bassy punch Ive tried deadcats, foam protection and neither seem to do the job completely.. however when experimenting with double layers of pop filter mesh i found it to work very well!! i am using a tascam tx6 for audio, and experimenting with a matched pair of Rode M5 mics, so part of the issue could be that i need proper shotgun microphones to have a more directional recording, then the deadcat might just do the trick?

I have the rode video mic pro plus. I had the foam cover on and was recording someone talking in the car while driving on the highway and the noise was pretty bad. Was wondering if a dead cat would have been better to have on. Or if I should have just used a lav mic on the talent.

You don't lose enough high end for it to matter with a fur windscreen. Most mics have a switch/button to compensate anyway.
@robertsaca35123 ай бұрын
What you do is test a bunch of frequencies with the dead cat on and off and replace the loss in post. Completely reverses the effects.

I like your video, but I had a hard time hearing the difference between all 3 situations. In my situation, I want to record as clear as possible the sound of a mini-split heater/cooler, especially the heat pump in the mini-split turning on and off. I think that would be similar to recording your fan and caputering the sound of the air flowing, the sound of the fan spinning, and sound of fan vibrating if that makes any sense. I think that the dead cat would take too much out and the mic with nothing would be too distorted. So perhaps the foam windsreen would work best? What do you think? I plan to use the Zoom H6 to record noise, and I need to document/record noise that is produced by an mini-split (Heater/Air Conditioner) while it is running from about 8 ft away. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear. The unit sounds listened. The sound of the air flow is gone. The buzzing sound of the heat pump is gone. The sound of the heat-up running is gone. Basically, the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. I want to recorded it so it sounds exactly how it sounds in person. Oh is there any mic that you recommend?

Just ordered a microphone that can convert into phone jack or dlsr and it comes with foam and dead cat and I don’t know am I supposed to put the dead cat over the foam ? Using it for outdoor. Why I ordered this? Because it has both windscreen but I’ve never own one before so I don’t know should I using one at a time or both together, I ordered this because i going on boat and bus tour so there will be tons of wind , I will experiment when it arrive

Are you using the deadcat on the shotgun mic by itself, or on top of the foam windscreen?
@AlteraSound3 жыл бұрын
On top of the foam. The Rode deadcat is designed to fit over the foam and won't sit on the mic properly otherwise.

Hi, I do a lot of outdoor vlogging (Fishing sessions) would you mount the windshield over the top of the foam or is it more of a replacement so take the foam off and just use the deadcat? would the deadcat normally go over the foam? Im using a Rode Go.
@AlteraSound Жыл бұрын
It depends on the mic, but generally the Rode shotgun mics are designed for the dead cat to go over the foam.
@VladMalik3 жыл бұрын
Why put a deadcat on top of the foam? It's a foam vs form+deadcat comparison
@AlteraSound3 жыл бұрын
I only did this for the NTG1. With that mic, the dead cat is designed to go over the foam, and won't fit properly otherwise.

@ElectricLabel3 жыл бұрын
You're supposed to use the deadcat with a foam windscreen. The deadcat is an additional layer, its not designed to be one or the other.
@AlteraSound3 жыл бұрын
For the NTG1, I tested with the dead cat over the foam. The other mics aren't designed to be used this way, so I tested the foam and dead cat separately.

I envolved in memory foam my microphone (the in built mic from my smartphone) and it really sounded awful!! Not like your video (sounded like it didn't have anything on it)
@jonpatchmodular3 жыл бұрын
A smartphone mic is usually a crappy mic with only high frequencies, so just adding a wind shield is already taking a lot away. These things are meant for decent microphones or portable recorders
