In this video I do a shoot out with 3 folding shovels the Coleman Folding Shovel and Pick, The Gerber Gorge Folding Shovel and the New 2015 Schrade SCHSH1 Telescoping Shovel. All 3 shovels will compete in a head to head shoot out where you the viewer will decide the winner and loser.

Schrade: 4.5 -- I would prefer that they only have one side sharpened and leave the other side dull. Gerber: 3.5 -- I like how small it packs up, but it would be nice to see longer extension on the handle. Coleman: 1 -- Boneyard this cheap thing. It acts like it is going to fall apart at a moment's notice.

Coleman - 0 Gerber - 2 Schrade - 3 Cold Steel SFS - 4 United Cutlery M48 - 4.5 (forget the idiots that sell it as some sort of tactical weapon, it really shovels well, cuts roots, light weight & so far it has held up) * I haven't found a 5 star option in a shovel yet

Thanks Wingman 115 .. great video and you have a new subscriber.. I have the united Cutlery UC8017 .. It seems to be very similar to the Coleman ... but much better made, and the locking collar actually works. It has the pick end vs the hammer, but is just as small as the coleman ... It's what the Coleman wants to be. In the video ... Coleman 1 Gerber 3.5 United cutlery 4.2 (small takes away 1/2 point) Schrade ......... 4.8 I have my original issued Canadian Army entrenching tool with the wooden handle (1974), but it's a bit bulky attached onto my newer style frame pack. Great video .. keep em' coming ...

Sharpen the edge of the Gerber and along with the portability, I think it's the choice. Gerber 4. (Holds tight during use. Durable and compact for kit.) Coleman 2. (I like the pick, but had issues with one coming loose with hard use.) Schrade 3. (Mainly because it's too big for a folding shovel).

Wingman, first i would like to say, great video. I found it well thought out and the testing was fair and relatively easy to understand the results. I would like to have seen more on the sheath if they come with one, because this is a factor in purchasing shovels in my opinion. Although the price was not meantioned, i feel it is also a consideration along with the weight of each shovel. As far as my ratings i would have to say based on your video Coleman-1 Gerber-2 and Schrade-5 The coleman shovel had locking issues and it did not have a featur for a hammer. The Gerber was better but it was not sharp and if you have a lot of roots where you did, well you might be there for a while. The Schrade is the best because it was sharp, had a hammer feature and the carbon steel would throw the most sparks. Thanks and be safe Andrew

Deputy Prepper The only sheath that had a belt loop was the Schrade. The other shovels came in bags. As for a price point the Schrade is so new I couldn't lock down a retail and didn't want to misrepresent the product. In the results video if I can get the retails I will state them..Thanks for commenting.

Schrade 4.5 Gerber 2.5 Coleman 1.5 For small tasks these work ok, I take the Condor folding shovel it weighs a bit more but has a unique shape that works great. Thanks for a great video.

I've had the schrade for over 6 months and I lov it !, this vid is exactly what you need the see when picking equipment , smallest and cheapest isn't always best !! Schrade 10 !! The other 2 crap !!

Good demonstration, I would have liked to see how well the locking mechanism worked after each test, I assume they preformed good with the exception of the Colman. I have had trouble with folding shovels after the threads get filled with dirt and mud.

The only one that kept loosening up was the Coleman. Then after awhile even with the collar nut tight the shovel blade was loose..

I have the Coleman. I got it as a gift and it is okay, but it looks like the schrade is much higher quality. I don't dig a lot around camp though so the coleman works alright for now. It is really small, too. I wish you would have put up prices though :/

Good demo. Like you said, I don't know why you would chop with a shovel. .. I give the Colman a 2, the Gerber a 3.5, and the Schrade a 4.8. Don't like that edge.

I own a Colman shovel like that one. for a shovels job it works good. the pick loosens up the dirt great. it was a cheap shovel about 10 dollars for the price I like it. plus a shovels job is to dig. I did put an edge on the shovel with a grinder. thanks for the video ,it was great.

A question on the Schrade John, when in use, would it be ergonomically practical to have the graduated telescoping feature set to any other position that full open? It didn't appear that there was much more than one hand width of space there to begin with. Thanks brother.

Only thing I was thinking where I might shorten the handle is if I was doing say a Dakota fire home and needed the shovel to fit in a tight spot but still be able to dig or trench.

The proof is in the pudding. What was the weight of each please? From the birds eye view it seems the Shrade was the heaviest. Love the side by side :) the only one I have seen.

I love my Schrade shovel. Rate it 4.5. As you dig, it cuts through roots like butter, thanks to its sharp edges. Telescoping handle is rock solid. However, I wish it had a picaxe. Strong hardened steel. It has a sheath, not a pouch. If you want to use the hammer, then protect yourself by merely sheathing the blade. A pickax would make this a 5.0. Highly recommend.

Excellent video John! Coleman - 1 (the mechanical failures make it a complete waste of time) Gerber - 4 (very good at all except the chopping) Schrade - 5 (good at all tasks. At least comparable to the Gerber, and able to do more than it)

I've got a *generic* copy of the Coleman. Have not used it too much. Handy to make a hip hole for my ground pad or to clear debris away from a campsite. Not sure it'd hold up to much hard use. I keep a WWII folding shovel in my truck box and it has gotten me unstuck at least once. I think they all have strengths/weaknesses, but the bottom line is they can be handy.

Only used the colt, and must say it Rubust, had a second hand in the army. Once I used it for hours to dig a fox hold in frozen ground, and I just abused it, and it was taking everything!

From what I've seen in this vid and another, the Schrade is tops except for the striking tool sticking out a little too far and being difficult to see(?). I noticed you missed once with it. I also like that it is the largest. I have a garden spade in my bob that's almost as large as the other two. Schrade 4 1/2 Gerber 3 1/2 Coleman 2 (3 if that pick is useful)

The Schrade seems like the best to me. Get rid of the Coleman. However I do not like a t-handled or triangle handle on the shovel. Also you should have thrown in a Glock Shovel for further comparison. nice review!

Schrade - 5 Gerber - 4 Coleman - 3 The Coleman is smaller, probably lighter in weight and easier to carry. It has a pick. It probably costs less than the other two. The edge of the Coleman CAN be sharpened to make it a better chopper. STRONG 3 score. Maybe 3.5.

Say Heah John, My Fav that goes on most extended trips us my military issue made in 1942 W. W. 2 vintage, It's the one that possitions the shovel in different angles, A good kitty hole makes and a few other applications. But because of its weight, I really like my Black and Decker garden shovel, It's nice and lite and so far it's holding up for over 2 years now and I don't see any reason to get any other shovel, If it's not broke don't fix it.

First let me say I am prejudice to the old wood handle GI shovel. But that said to me the Coleman just a 2 maybe, the Gerber a 3, the Schrade if I was to buy a new shovel would be a 4.

***** Surprisingly the *Glock Shovel* or Glock Entrenching Tool or E-Tool was absent from the test. That tool would have blown away the other shovels (IMO). Check out any review (especially Amazon's 5 star review on the Glock E-Tool) and you will see why I am praising the Glock over these other designs.

Nice shootout sir. The Coleman looked like a POS. That looked like a 1 to me. I like how compact the Gerber was. It looked like the only place where it really got trounced by the Schrade was in chopping which I'm guessing could be fixed with a file. Id say that was a 4. The Schrade didn't look like it needed anything out of the box. It appeared pretty solid and as long as it's size suits you I'd say it looked like a 4.5 to me.

Coleman - 0, Been there, done that, it broke. Gerber - 0, Been there, done that, it broke too. Schrade - 4, I haven't tried a Schrade shovel, but, based on the test, I'll know where to look if I need a folding shovel. Schrade generally makes good stuff! Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel - 5+, It chops. It throws. It whacks. It hacks, and in a pinch it can even be used as a shovel to dig a hole! It's the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel! Operators are standing by! :-) Seriously though, this is the one I settled on after my Coleman and my Gerber both broke. My only regret is that I didn't buy the Cold Steel shovel first! Did I mention that it can even be used to deflect bullets?! ;-)

You didn't note the price points for each. The Coleman was smaller, the Gerber in the middle and the Schrade was the widest and longest of the group. I'll say Coleman 3, Gerber 4 and the Schrade because of the size and added chopping ability will get 5. Sometimes you DO have to chop through roots. :)

Schrade 4 (A bit big....near E-Tool depending on your purpose/needs)Gerber 4 (Would be nice to have a sharper edge but that's why you need a car knife/hawk)Coleman 3 (Not very capable but could be the answer if weight/size is a premium & needs are smaller in scale)Point: All may be the right tool for the right job.Note: I've used the Coleman and they fill a niche for their obvious capability limitations. I must say, it seems Schrade is being peddled a little bit here Wingman. I think Schrade does some OK gear but observe your swings in the video....clearly more power being put behind the Schrade w/not that much better performance than the Gerber. Swings with the Gerber could have been as powerful but you clearly cut them short. Swings on the Coleman were the least powerful(observe your arm's range of motion) but this is more understandable considering the limitations of the tool. Thanks.

Dude, when you strike a ferro rod, the trick is to move the rod, not the metal thing used as a striker. Much better control of where that spark goes.

Coleman-1 Definitely garbage. Gerber-3.5 Pretty good. Sturdy and well built. Schrade-4.5 For sure the better of the three. Well built, sturdy, sharp edge and t-shape handle. I really think the Schrade would benefit a guy the most.

Coleman - 1 Gerber - 4 Schrade - 5 I have never used a Coleman but with very good reason, every time I have picked one up it just feels very poorly made and lacks quality.

Schrade 5 grandslam Gerber 4 dull blade easily fixed Coleman 1 gimicky edge ripples and the pick is useless ( had one myself ) Dumper-boneyard

lol i bet none of them can handle west Virginia soil iv broke so many brans of shovels here only one that kind of held up was my aims shovel and cold steel survival shovel sharp end are made for cutting roots i don't no why you survival guys chop wood with them but good video
