My advice would be to chamber a round in a situation like this. I was trained in the military not to chamber rounds unless you're in a situation where you'll likely have to use your weapon. This is one of those situations. Also, keep a good tactical light with you at all times. Put that light right on them and tell them to get lost. They can push the 4 wheeler out of your camp or come back for it in the morning. Once they leave, pack up and go yourself. Don't stick around waiting for the unknown. Never offer help to someone in the middle of the night unless it's a medical emergency. Also, at night, you have to be firm and assertive with strangers and let them know that they are not welcome on your campsite. We can be friendly after the sun comes up, but at night we operate under a different set of rules. Glad everything worked out for you and your family, and thank you for sharing your story.

At night we operate with different rules!! Well said Sir!! My husband is a veteran and he sets up a perimeter for us. Along with our RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK. Most folks stay away.. We were attacked by idiots camping remotely. When Hunter started chewing the idiot #1 . The other guy left his friend to be eaten by a angry RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK. It was interesting how he sounded as he was fighting for his life. He was stuck like chuck. He went to prison missing fingers and parts of his head, neck and chest. Opps. Stay safe and keep your head on a swivel brother

@@annmariemichael1928 A friend of mine had a RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK which escaped one day, it chased a cat, jumped a 6ft fence, caught the cat before it had even hit the ground, the RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK with the cat in its mouth shook it just once from side to side, and let me tell you Ann, that cat just opened right up, at this point I heard screaming, unfortunately the owner of the cat,a young girl was sat in her garden about 3ft away from where it happened. The RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK dropped what was left of her cat and ran off, her cat somehow managed to pull itself using just it's front legs (as it's rears where barely connected) under a parked car, where it very quickly died. The young girl obviously in hysterics and traumatized at this point turned to me and started attacking me, understandably thinking it was my RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK, which it wasn't.

Thanks for sharing your valuable experience. I worked at a hospital inpatient alcohol-drug rehab unit several years ago. Whenever we had an unruly patient we would first send in the smallest female nurse, and it would usually defuse the crisis. Good choice having the wife make first contact. I am an ex Marine, ex police officer, and I keep a chamberd weapon close by. I've never felt the need to remove it from the quick access storage location, but I have opened the door a couple of times. I live in a van, so I'm more secure than being in a tent. I also have the added option to quickly relocate if necessary. I position myself with a clear exit path, backed in, not boxed in. My best protection is what you learned from this experience, avoid questionable situations. I prefer disbursed camping. I avoid locations that support alcohol consumption, and I stay away from large groups. Do more family camping, preferably with another like-minded family, and expose your family to many more valuable life experiences. Enjoy nature and the many opportunities this country still has to offer.

The worst thing that ever happened to me while camping was being sprayed by a skunk. The little critter was behind a tree, & I guess I made it nervous. I never did get that terrible odor out of my jeans or my right boot. If anyone with a left foot needs a size 9 hiking boot, I’ve got one you can have.

@@RestlessWonderer I picked up a rescue dog from a shelter that was kind of disheveled and had been a stray from Texas that was shipped up to Oregon. My wife and I noticed he was kind of stinky so we scheduled a dog groomer to wash him the next day after we brought him home. When we picked him up from the groomer we were notified that he had been previously sprayed by a skunk and as soon as they got water on him the smell was much stronger and distinct.

From someone who has had hunting dogs, the best solution for dogs sprayed by skunks, a solution of Dawn dish soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, works wonders. Rub it in good and let it set. It will get rid of about 80% of the smell. Tomato sauce and the formula in pet shops just don't work. I've had to use this 25 or more times.

Thank you for this information. I have two takeaways from both of your videos. First, I'm glad your and your family are safe. Second, there is absolutely no substitute for real world experience. All of us can talk about "this is what I'd do" or "this is what you should do," etc, etc, but you have first-hand knowledge of a dangerous situation that could have caused harm to you and your family. Everyone's opinion is subjective and what works for one person will not work for someone else. You handled this event to the best of your ability in the moment and no one really knows what they're going to do in a similar situation until they are actually in such of a situation. Please note, my point is not discredit anyone and their opinions. I also agree with a lot of the comments as a means to be better prepared in the future. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I am grateful that you decided to share your experience with the rest of us.

A dozen of us at a campground, several tents, 3am everyone sleeping, pitch black woods, some moonlight, I'm in a bag on a fold-out cot beside a heavy picnic table. I hear footsteps walk past our camp twice, then the third time they stopped. They didn't see me behind the table, but could I see the fat one squat down and reach out with both hands for one of our big coolers. I calmly said from behind the table, "Why don't you just ask me to shoot ya?" (my 40s&w was in my hand, but not chambered). The fat one slowly backed away. Too slowly as far as I was concerned. I shouted, "Come here you fat sob!". I heard them run into each other in the scramble. A few minutes later I heard a car startup and leave the campground. Next morning, nobody in our group heard a thing.

As I have gotten older this kind of encounter has become more of a concern to me. So listening to your video made me think being able to pack up and move quickly is part of a good preparation plan. Not only for dealing with unpleasant people but health & weather emergencies. Policing your camp before going to bed at night,packing away unnecessary items in your vehicle. Maybe assigning everyone in your party tasks ahead of time to avoid confusion if an emergency arises.

I grew up in Colorado Springs and in 1999, we bought a house in Florissant, CO. about 35 minutes west of Rampart Range Rd. It has always been very busy, even 25-35 yrs ago. However, it has unfortunately changed for the worse in the last 10 years. There are a lot of homeless people, addicts and drunks in that area. Many come up from Colorado Springs to live in the forest, some from Teller County. Some Woodland Park locals call Rampart Range Rd the ghetto of Pike National Forest because of it. So many people leave huge amounts of trash, including campers, cars etc! Which is a shame because it's a beautiful area with so many opportunities for all types of outdoor recreation, not to mention the views! Due to this, last year the forest service went to work putting up barriers etc and changed a good portion of Rampart Range Rd from being a dispersed camping system to a reservation and pay system. They want to clean up and better regulate the area, which is both a bummer and a blessing. Too bad folks can't act right!! Glad you had a good outcome!

Great follow up video and I agree with everything you said. The term “clip” originally comes from en bloc/stripper clips I believe, which are metal strips that loose rounds are attached to feed into a rifle’s internal magazine for fast feeding a firearm such as an m1 garand or Mauser bolt action. It’s more of an old timey term but I have bought 556 ammo before that comes attached to clips. You have to slide the cartridges off to load a modern AR magazine.

Something kind of similar happened to me when I was a kid, this would have been in the mid 1970’s. We were at the Cove Palisades state park in Oregon. We were tent camping, it was me at probably about 10 and my mom and dad. We went to bed probably at 10pm and there was a large group of young adults playing loud music and drinking next to us, I’m guessing probably 10 individuals. They started throwing watermelon rinds at our car, boat and tent. Then they started coming in our campsite and came around the back of our tent and started peeing on it. We got up, went outside and my mom took the car and drove to the head rangers house which is like 1/2 mile away. Within 30 minutes there were probably 8-10 state and county police cars there. They ended up taking several people to jail, cited multiple others and made them poor our all their remaining alcohol on the ground. The ones that were left, were made to leave immediately. They weren’t allowed to pack up anything, they just had to get in their cars and go.

I was a single mother of one son. I always had bear spray and only got a couple of guns when my son moved out of the house. So, I can understand why you wouldn't keep one in the chamber when you have children, But, I ALWAYS have one in the chamber now, and carry it on my body, never in my purse. I go camping in the wilderness alone, at least 50 miles from a small town. I am much safer alone than someplace with people. When my son was a young boy, we'd go camping every weekend in the wilderness with one of his friends, ride dirt bikes, and have a blast. I felt safe because when I have motorcycles and a big 4x4 crew cab truck...most people don't think of 'single woman'. I have gone horse camping in remote public campgrounds, but I never sign up as 'one' camper...always 2 or more. And, I'll even bring an extra horse too. I love the serenity and the solitude of being in the purest form of nature. Bears? Cougars? They don't scare me...people do. Today, I still go camping alone, and I live in nature on a farm...the best life ever!

I noticed that the ammo you have in your magazine looks like a full metal jacket round point. I highly recommend hollow point when carrying a concealed carry firearm for self defense. Also always carry a firearm with one round in the chamber, as well as a extra loaded magazine. Your level headed deescalation strategy is perfect. No need to agitating the confrontation needlessly. A woman is a better communicator and de-escalator in potential dangerous situations. Stay well and safe! You and your wife did the best strategy! Keep camping and the shotgun is also the best choice for self defense of family safety!!!

So I grew up in Fort Bragg California and spent my childhood recreational camping and my adult life guiding whitewater rafting. Two very different kinds of camping . In Fort Bragg it’s not really camping tell there is a fight ( lame if you ask me) . Guiding whitewater it’s a very different crowd never a problem ever . So I guess a person doesn’t need a gun when deep in the wildness camping. Although if your ever where there’s going to be people that are comfortable and close to town bring the firearm because like you said humans drinking are the very most dangerous animal. I’m impressed with the self control you showed and the way you dealt with a threat around your children. I have made the wrong decision when I felt the need to protect my kid and it ended up scaring her way worse than the initial incident. I ended up being the one that caused the emotional damage to my daughter . It s darks and she’s already scared the last thing kids need at that point is for dad to get into a fight or worse have to shoot somebody. I think your a rockstar father for your calm cool and collected well thought out response. I only wish I had done the same as a young father and today at 47 and a grandfather I would of reacted quite differently than at 23.

@DavidHBurkart
@DavidHBurkart Ай бұрын
Correct. Older semi-auto pistols were fed by stripper clips and there are full-moon and half-moon clips for revolvers which are still available and I believe there are still stripper-clips available to actually load detachable magazines, which seems like a waste of time/effort to me. Why not just obtain and carry extra magazines in the first place? For the Garand and the Springfield with a fixed magazine, those stripper clips were literal lifesavers in their time

It is a magazine for a rifle. Specifically, it is a detachable box magazine. People have different approaches to whether to pre-chamber or not. I won't say. A revolver is always chambered. Bear spray is not just for bears. One effective way to approach or confront a strange person in your camp is to have a super bright flashlite in your hand, whether ot not you are armed. If the meeting gets sketchy, blind them, step back and draw - if armed. Keep the light in their face(s). Do not allow them to focus on your exact location. What happens next is up to the fates.

I will be back up there in a few weeks as Junior is graduating USAFA Basic Training. Other than my encounters as posted in previous video, I have had others. As stated before, I am now retired LEO of 36 years (spent 4 down the road at NORAD in the 80's}. You will get a kick out of these 2 encounters: About a decade ago while hiking the area above 7 Falls with my son, we encountered an idiot I arrested years before in North Texas. He recognized me and called me by name (along with other names) and came directly at us stating " what are you going to do now, your out of your jurisdiction and unarmed and you have your kid with you") How wrong he was. Before he got within 30 feet of me, I lifted my shirt and began to pull out my M1911 (Rock Island) and told him to back off. He quickly did and that was that. The other was on a beach in San Diego. I was in a class out there and that night I did a ride out with SDPD. They got a call of a disturbance on the beach and when the officer I was with arrived, (along with another officer and co-worker from my agency) I noticed the guy causing the problem was from our home jurisdiction. He saw both of us Texas cops in civilian attire and said "what are ya'll doing here?" (1500 miles from home) We told the SDPD cops that he had felony warrants out of Texas that we filed on him months before. He was arrested for Delivery of Heroin. This just goes to say you will never know who you will run into and why it is good to be armed when out and about. This is especially true for active & retired cops, since bad guys will usually get released and can be encountered again years later.

I used to work in EMS and we had a man who was dead by the time they got help- who'd had a round chambered in his rifle, forgot about it or planned to use it again soon, put it in a gun rack in his truck (when those things still existed) slammed his door shut and it went off and killed him.. Once I had a revolved drop and it landed on it's handle aimed straight at me as I naturally reached to catch it... feel so glad it didn't fall hard enough to go off. So unless I felt there was a threat, I wouldn't chamber it, but I would practice rapid work with the gun so it wouldn't take long. and that guy is lucky he lived after threatening. Can't assume a threat is merely that in that situation.

I would recommend driving further West just get away from the closeness of the large cities. Meeker, CO is epic, Silverton, CO is epic look for places out there not on the weekend. I think you handled as good as you could for being woke up from a sleep in a vulnerable tent. I'll never understand drunk people that get angry at EVERYTHING. It sounded like they were the perfect couple wanting to fight everyone over nothing. They were the ones needing help and I'm sure if they were happy drunks that were nice and asking for jumper cables etc you would have helped them. I don't get these people. If you travel in the backcountry especially with your family you need to have a satellite phone and a hardwired high power GMRS radio installed in your vehicle. You need to have a way to communicate when there is no cell service.

I’m new to your channel, so I found and watched that video. I will echo some of your other viewer’s comments. (I also have 2 decades of military and a decade and a half of law enforcement experience.) Magazine/clip - yep - people tend to interchange the terms, but they are actually different - my other comment offers to shows you some pictures of clips if you’re interested. The easy way to remember is is that clips are used to speed-load magazines (fixed or detachable). I agree that you should have a chambered round. I’ve carried nearly every day for the last 50 years, and I always have a loaded chamber - in that split-second of reaction time, you are likely not going to remember you need to chamber a round, and you may very well not have the dexterity to do so. Even if you do, that’s a full second plus that you are taking off of your reaction time. Other than that, you handled it well. There were several places where things could have gone sideways, but you were able to deescalate, and went home safe - that’s what counts.

Both are magazines but people do get wrapped around terminology too much, main importance is firearms safety. Also, chambered firearms are the way to go but never let someone persuade you to do something you’re uncomfortable with. Train with it and gain self confidence then carry it chambered. Good on ya though bro 🤙🏼

I kinda like that because he is trained in keeping us safe.OCD...ok! We have a 80lb RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK that is on alert 24/7 !!! He sets up his own perimeter LMAO and protects it accordingly.

I disagree with the comment by the cop about always having a round chambered. Perhaps he missed the part about you having three kids, in which case you do NOT want a round chambered - ready to fire. Almost any incident you are going to run across while camping is going to allow you the second or two it takes to rack the slide of your handgun or operate the bolt or slide on your long gun. The last thing you want is for one of your children to pick-up your gun and accidentally pull the trigger with a round in the chamber. I've camped on several occasions along Rampart Range Road outside of Colorado Springs and I agree that this was not a really safe place to be hanging out, especially at night. I had run across people on a couple of occasions that were, shall we say, of interest to law enforcement.

You are lucky, in Canada we are not allowed to have firearms to defend ourselves. When I was younger we where at a government camp site but know staff when shooting started happening. We backup and left. That spoiled a lot of camping for me, hiking is different. I think group camping might be an answer.

I noticed in the original video you said that the area you were camping was federal land and a "national forest". The following information was given to me by US forestry personnel at the Woodsferry National Forest. A lot of people think that "national forests", and "national parks" are the same thing, however they are not and furthermore it isn't legal to carry a firearm in a national forest. It is legal to carry in a national park there is a law on the books that allows for it. However national parks are operated by the department of the interior, and national forests are operated by the US forestry service. Two completely different agencies with two completely different sets of rules. Now please don't get me wrong, I don't care where you carry, just know there could be real consequences if you get caught.

Glad it ended well. Won't dog pile you about not having a round chambered. That's a confidence issue for you. When your training and skill improves you will find the misgivings you have about carrying a defensive pistol with a round chambered to be more of a liability than an asset. Maybe take a few defensive pistol classes, and be sure to focus on weapons retention. Good luck to you and your family.

I've watched this video and the original. Before I comment, I do know the 60 miles of the Rampart Range Road, but it's 20+ years in my past. I miss the Colorado Front Range and high country! Also have many years experience in wilderness SAR, have been an EMT on a bear attack on sleeping tent campers. Have carried a gun ALWAYS in the back country for a half century now, and only a little less in everyday life. Yes, your pistol and rifle use magazines, not clips. A "Stripper Clip" is a device to reload a magazine quickly. A magazine may be removable or built-in to the firearm. Something like the M1 Garand Rifle or old C96 Mauser pistol have built-in magazines that are reloaded using stripper clips. Modern firearms tend to use removable magazines and stripper clips have become unusual and aren't seen much. You held up a double-stack magazine for your 9mm pistol and a box magazine for your centerfire rifle, not clips. Not chambering a round is strange to me. It is defeating of the purpose be it self defense or hunting. Please never do that again. Instead, train and practice safe handling. Do not do this with live ammunition, train in handling, drawing the weapon all while using dummy rounds. There are many brands and types of dummy rounds you can buy to practice handling and drawing with no concern of an accident. Even so, train with dummy rounds as if they are real live ammunition. This is key to safe handling, always treat the gun as if it is loaded with real live ammunition. The best reaction to danger is always to get the hell away from it if at all possible. So, yes, I agree with the people who advised you to get the family out of there as rapidly as possible. That does mean you abandon your stuff, which is nothing compared to the safety of your children. You toss the sleepy kids physically into the car and you leave. You do not pack up or make coffee, you flee unless you are prevented from fleeing. When you reach cell phone coverage you call 911. You do not have to be right about the risk, you let law enforcement evaluate that. Give the best description you can, but emphasize that you leaving that instant, period end of story. Ask law enforcement to accompany you to retrieve your property. Usually they do not mind at all. I'm of two minds on the concealed firearm, or the openly carried. Hard to know if drunks will react as you want them to when seeing you have a gun. Drunk people do stupid things and sobering up at the sight of overwhelming force isn't always their reaction. Sure glad you all got thru this alright. Hope you continue to enjoy Colorado's wonderful back country!!!

Scary stuff...at least you can carry weapons to defend yourselves with...here in the UK we cannot carry pepper spray (Illegal) a gun ( VERY illegal) a knife and if you hurt a criminal whilst trying to defend yourself...it can be a very thin line between defending yourself and geting sued by the 'criminal' for harming THEM...!

Those are both magazines. They have springs and are enclosed and designed to feed a new round into the chamber. As far as the drunks, it's easy to Monday morning quarterback, but in the end you and your family are safe, nobody got hurt so you must have made the right decision. I camp and backpack alone sometimes and also carry a pistol when I do. I'm not sure how I would have handled that alone. I'm a former cop, can handle myself but still would have definitely been vulnerable in that scenario. It may have ended badly for at least one of them.

You may want to consider upgrading your ammunition to some type of hollow point rounds that have some stopping power. The what looks like ball ammunition you are carrying will basically go through what you are shooting at without expanding and causing the maximum damage a hollow point would. Especially important if a bigger animal is coming at you.
@brianphillips8228
@brianphillips8228 Жыл бұрын
Ball ammo gets more penetration against animals with thicker hides and bones. Hollow points won’t do against some animal predators. They just won’t penetrate far enough to reach vital organs. You’re right, hollow points are more effective against two legged predators, but less effective against the 4 legged ones.

A. Chamber a round! B. You use a clip to load magazines more quickly. That rifle one you showed is a magazine. An M1 Garand uses a clip. C. Don't mention that you have kids they don't care it just makes them think you are automatically a weaker target.

I've watched both of your videos, this one and the one in the woods. I tried carrying a gun without a chambered round, but what always came to the surface was the confusion of chambering the round in a crisis. It wasn't long before I realized, it's safer to have a round chambered at all times. My gun has a safety, which is probably almost as bad as not having a round chambered, because in a crisis you may forget to turn the safety off. But I do keep the safety on and Hope that I remember to take it off in a crisis. There's always going to be one risk or another with guns, but you do the best you can. And last, you want a full featured gun that's very small and very reliable that you can carry without it being noticed too much. Take care and thanks for the videos.

You have to become proficient at handling your weapon ‼️ You need to set up a time daily, weekly, monthly where you will handle your weapon in a safe environment and know every aspect of its function. You need to work out a dry fire scenario where you load a magazine and chamber a round, and discharge the weapon with deliberate confidence knowing the function of the safety and other functions ‼️ thereafter train into a live fire scenario. As you grow confident like driving a car you will also know how to handle a weapon in a stressful situation ‼️🤔

@@MrDeleoco A follow-up to your video and comments. Yes things are getting potentially more dangerous in unsupervised areas such as campgrounds. I bought a Beretta 32 Caliber well researched gun and it's designed to make shooting fun with lots of features that other guns don't have, mainly can be concealed easily. Because if someone knows you have a weapon they can be more unpredictable. Also I'm taking the advice to practice my weapon. Good luck on your future camping experiences. Take care.

@@MrDeleoco, I agree with your suggestions. I'd also suggest carrying a revolver in the woods. 357 mag in the woods, and 38 special ammo for training. Very easy to use, if someone has the hand strength to shoot double action. Since I go to places where I've seen a couple of wolves and a black bear, I carry a S&W 629. Never had to shoot at an animal, but would rather have the 240 gr 44 mag than most autos. (Exception: my Glock 20 comes with me when I go alone, but my wife would rather shoot the 44 than the 10mm, so I bring Smith since we're both comfortable shooting it.)

If it helps any, I also went out on a camping trip without realizing it was Memorial Day weekend. I was doing a bicycle tour on the Blue Ridge Parkway and traffic was atrocious for the weekend, a lot of it being loud motorcycle traffic. Luckily I could just take it easy for the weekend and traffic was much, much better for the rest of the time I was on the tour.

Not a clip, but a magazine. Clips exist, but that is not one. Clips bundle rounds together allowing for the quick and easy insertion of all the rounds at once into a magazine. BTW, I strongly agree with Yukon's comment regarding having a round chambered.

I'd like to suggest taking some defensive firearm classes where you are trained to be confident with your handguns in a stressful environment. A good defensive handguns course at a place like Gunsight Academy would do a world of good. If you're not trained, it's going to make a defensive encounter that much more difficult. However, that said, research the training school you choose and make sure you are being trained by qualified professionals. I'm an advocate for getting quality training and practicing with your handgun with dry fire practice(remove all ammunition from your practice area including loaded magazines) drawing from concealed and dry firing three to five times a week. Do live fire practice at least every other week and consider competing in local USPSA style matches which will help add the pressure you need to get used to. Although, a real world defensive use will be much more stressful. But, competing will help train your gross motor skills into muscle memory. Thanks for sharing your experience and yes, the rifle magazine is a magazine. Look up M1 Garand to see what a clip is.

im sure this got said already but you generally wont find a clip for modern guns. Clips are small metal strips that grip the rims of the cartrages for loading them into an internal magazine such as those on old school WWII rifles. They are also sometimes used to more quickly load regular magazines by loading 5-10 rounds at once instead of 1 at a time. That rifle one you showed would also be a magazine since you load it into the rifle and not push rounds into the gun with it and discard.

scariest camping experience we had was setting up camp in a wisconsin state park. i was drinking a beer setting up the tent. my wife was making some sandwiches for the kids. the sun was going down when suddenly a car pulled in. in the car were two young gentleman dressed in what would typically be classified as gang clothes. black and white nike/adidas as well as gang style bandannas. it was a low rider style monte carlo. i nodded at them and they nodded back and then they drove off. i had a bad feeling about it and thought they might come back later wgen we were sleeping to attack us. so we packed up and went to a cheap hotel in the area.
