Dave Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana, not the guitarist. This song is not about Kurt Cobain. Dave has said it's about people who influenced him in his life who were just ordinary people(hence the lyrics) that he observed doing great things. Cool reaction though.

Grohl has said it is "loosely based on Kurt, but wanted it to be more applicable to everyday heroes." "Use that evidence, race it around"... about Kurt's death investigation. That's all per Grohl. IMO, you can see how the lyrics change after that to be pliable to anyone.

I prefer to think it's about Kurt, and that's what most people think the song is about, so let's just leave it at that. It doesn't even matter what Dave Grohl said because musicians always say stuff about their songs, then say other things later. Plus, people sing about things unconsciously. If he didn't purposely sing this about Kurt, then it just came out that way regardless.

i can't find the interview, but if i remember, the song was not about Kurt, but about some older kid in his neighborhood growing up that could ride his bike faster than everyone else or do tricks (its's been a while since i heard the interview). anyway, the song was meant to be that you didn't have to be super in order to inspire - you could be ordinary, you just had to try.

The thickest neck in rock/ metal is George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher of death metal band Cannibal Corpse 🤘🤘 When Dave Grohl was playing drums in Nirvana, he said he learned a lot about songwriting from (the late) Kurt Cobain... simple songwriting, strong melodies, hooks... That philosophy in Nirvana carried over to Foo Fighters... but Dave did not want to ride on Kurt's coattails; he wanted his own sound and made the 1st Foo Fighters album sound nothing like Nirvana. Now, rock history has so many artists trying to begin anew after being in a successful band, but building their own audience always proved problematic in the shadow of a legendary band... Robert Plant and Jimmy Page could not escape Led Zeppelin's shadow... Roger Waters found his solo records disappointing after leaving Pink Floyd... George Lynch (guitar) could never replicate the success of Dokken... Bruce Dickinson found his solo career flounder after he quit Iron Maiden in 1993... Rob Halford of Judas Priest had the same problem when he quit Priest in 1992 for a solo career... Chris Cornell found his solo records floundering after the breakup of Soundgarden in 1998... The list goes on... Dave Grohl took a risky chance releasing the first Foo Fighters record in 1995 and touring w/ the live band that year... playing only his original songs, while Nirvana fans showed up & kept screaming for Nirvana songs! But the record went gold... then platinum in the US, and in the UK, the Foo Fighters were playing huge shows by 1996. The 2nd Foo Fighters album 'The color & the shape' in 1997 was another challenge - to record his songs w/ the live band in the studio... Drummer William Goldsmith was not cutting it in the studio, so Dave Grohl re-recorded all the drums tracks - Goldsmith quit after he found out, and was replaced by (the late) Taylor Hawkins for the tour. But the album took off after the first single 'Monkey wrench' debuted on MTV and had 4 major singles - 'Everlong' ... 'My hero'... and 'Walking after you' ... the record went platinum even faster than the debut album. The Foo Fighters proved that they were here to stay... and Dave Grohl got the recognition as a songwriter and frontman.
@TheNewRevolution
@TheNewRevolution 2 жыл бұрын
Well said. Many rock legends in bands think the grass is greener on the solo side. Many of them find out the hard way they need the band. Mick Jagger and Keith Richard's would be another great example. Both have solo records you've never heard of....and really wouldn't want to listen too.

You can mark times in your life by the songs. We all know Taylor was a beast of a drummer, "the backbone of The Foos Fighters", as Dave would say. But, he was also one hell of a singer with huge stage presence. This performance is epic! 1/2 Foos & 1/2 Led Zeppelin singing "Rock & Roll" (LZ) at Wembley. @@TheRealSweetcherryo I had May 24th in Charlotte as well. I was flying in from Florida. I'm so sorry your Grandson won't be able to see them. 😢 What an experience that would have been for him. Truly sorry, my friend. ❤️

I was going to see them for the first time this year. I'm so gutted about Taylor, and feel awful about what his family, Dave, and the foos are going through. Even if the band doesn't call it a day, it will never be the same...

Dave Grohl is such a cool dood we need more people in the world like him.. Loved watching him drum off this young black girl she's amazingly talented.. He loved her so much he invited her to drum one of their songs live at concert..he often invites people out from the crowd to play guitar or drums on his concerts.. Very cool of him.

I'm always moved when I see them perform live - definitely check out how the stadium-filled crowds react when these more popular hits come on. The loss of Taylor Hawkins is heartbreaking... I don't know what the Foo Fighters are, or will be, without him.

First off dave grohl never said he wrote a song about Kurt cobain. He has been asked many many times if this song was for Kurt and he says its for ordinary people who influenced him. And also hes the drummer for nirvana. Kurt was the guarist.

Dave was the drummer of Nirvana, not the guitarist. Very talented musician. On the album "The colour and the shape" Dave replaced all of the previously recorded tracks by the Foo Fighters drummer at the time, William Goldsmith. After learning that Dave re-recorded all of the drum tracks for the album, William quit the band. That's when Dave reached out to Taylor Hawkins. The rest is history.

“Too alarming now…..to talk about”….. Exactly. Fly high, Taylor! Dave NEVER said this was about Kurt. He specifically said it was about ordinary heroes like fireman, etc. Moreover, Dave is the lead singer and guitarist of the Foo’s. Dave played drums in Nirvana. Nothing else. Ever.

Dave grohl was the drummer from nirvana, pat smear who plays guitar for the foo fighters was an extra guitar player near the end of nirvana. The other members were from the band sunny day real estate, except for the drummer Taylor Hawkins who passed away a few days ago, he used to be in alanis morissette’s band.

Hi Brad (ampersand) Lex! ❤ The lead singer for Foo Fighters was the drummer for Nirvana. A beautiful moment in history. The Foo Fighters played the White House, covering a Paul McCartney song (wings). The song...Band on the run (very nice). Here's a link if you're interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/horIpXtsecqAmbs Anyway, love you two. Peace ✌️.
