Maintain healthy digestion without diet taking over your life - the mantra Jodie and Vicky who both live with young onset Parkinson’s disease (YOPD) follow, which allows for their medication-induced sugar cravings. Have you also noticed a slight addiction to sugary foods since starting Parkinson’s treatment? 🍫🍭

I'm fairly recently diagnosed with PD and have found that intermittent fasting seems to help with reducing symptoms (to your point about the gut and impact to brain health). I do a 16:8 schedule and follow a keto-ish diet (I'm not fanatical, just try to make better choices). Grain Brain book was a good source of information for me. Lots of exercise makes a big difference too. Thank you for posting these vids for the community!

That's really interesting Craig, thank you for sharing! Were you interested in nutrition at all prior to your diagnosis? Was it a fairly easy change to make or did you struggle at first?

@@LivedHealthParks No, I was not particularly focused on nutrition and good eating habits. I've always been very active, but had a very poor diet. A couple of resources helped convince me to change my diet like Dr. Perlmutter's Grain Brain book and other research like Dr. Matthew Phillips as well. But the combo of dietary and very, very intentional exercise is what I'm focused on now. Worst case is that I'm stronger and healthier, even if it doesn't stalemate the symptoms.

I've heard others talk about that book too - I'm definitely adding it to my list. They sound like very sustainable changes to have made to your lifestyle, as well as a positive mindset. I hope you've enjoyed our other videos too.

High protein diet impacts my quality. I follow eating 1 hour after a dose. Allowing time for the meds to kick in before food hits. Plenty of water. Drinking is a no no or kept to a minimum. It impacts.

That's really interesting! Does a high protein diet have a positive or negative impact?

@@LivedHealthParks I find does negatively. I keep protein rich meals towards the end of the day. When I am done with my day. It did not in the start but as PD progressed it's a factor.

How much protein should I eat? The amount of protein you need each day depends on your body size. On average, a person who weighs between 60-70kg needs between 45-53g of protein. For example, you might eat a total of 47g in a day made up of 2 eggs (12g), a portion of meat or oily fish (20g) and a cup of kidney beans (15g).

@@parkinsonsmysecondshadow You're definitely not alone in that. Many people find that high-protein food can interfere with absorption of levodopa and therefore reduce the efficacy of the dose. Our next video that goes live tomorrow actually is actually based on timing your Parkinson's medication around food for this very reason.
