I had this thought years ago. The line "I need 6 eggs. That's too expensive." always makes me think it's because Gaston eats most of them so there's only a small amount left.

Yeah, if memory serves me at the time the movie came out it was perfectly reasonable to get a dozen for 89 cents, or maybe less. Of course just your basic inflation has a bit to do with the rise, but $5 a dozen is insanity, and lately I've seen it at higher than that at times. Thankfully KZbin has some great videos about alternatives that you can try out.

Honestly, Matpat makes it sound like 200 is a lot of chickens to have one hand, but my Great Depression Grandmother raised up to 300 chickens each year to sell for meat to a local inn and used the eggs they laid beforehand to sell and feed her 12 children. A little entrepreneurial for the time, but it has been done.

I know someone that raised a dozen or so chickens in his free time back in middle school. He sold them by the dozen on weekends, but I don't have exact numbers. Chicken farming was done differently in Gaston's time. It was only relatively recently that it was discovered that chickens could be raised in what would be considered cramped conditions compared to Gaston's time (which is a fun story in itself, some lady accidentally ordered too many chicks and was all "well, guess I gotta try and raise em in the usual space I raise a quarter of them", and now chicken is the most popular meat sold).

"When I was a lad, I ate four dozen eggs every morning to help me get large. And now that I'm grown, I eat five dozen eggs. So I'm roughly the size of a barge. " I like to imagine that Gaston was just going around early in the morning, pillaging eggs from everyone in town as he slowly grown into a bigger kid and then adult. Gaston going around chicken pens, just swallowing eggs and dipping. Eventually, he just became such a barge that he uses his strength to become the greatest giga-chad in the village. And because he's such a barge, nobody wants to challenge him due to his intimidating strength. In the song, LeFou says "no one's slick as Gaston, no one's quick as Gaston" implying that Gaston is so fast at consuming the eggs so then nobody is able to capture him early on which made him become big and strong in the end.

Something to take into consideration: If a hen is frightened, egg production halts for days. On several occasions, we had to deal with predators getting into the Chicken enclosure at night. Now fortunately, our hens were kept in a building at night, that locked from the outside, so only occasionally did we lose one. Still, the predators got into the fenced area they roamed during the day. After firing some shotgun blasts to take care of the problem, hens stopped laying eggs for almost 7 full days.

Yea, whilst we bred chickens to create eggs faster we also bred them to create larger eggs; now-a-days many chicken breeds can produce an egg each day roughly (when we cared for chickens at my school we always checked daily for eggs on top of making sure they had enough food and water), it can actually lead to calcium deficiency problems in chickens from producing so many eggs so farmers often to have to make sure their feed contains decent amounts of calcium in it so they can produce eggs (calcium deficiency means no eggs because egg's shells are made of calcium)

I don't think Gaston is loaded. His bread and butter is that he was in some war and is now the town's hero. He is using the clout to get either reduced prices to his lifestyle or get handouts. He is the strong guy and has charisma and the town doesn't look at him for why they have economic issues.

I think you overlooked that the town would've because accustomed to gastons egg consumption when he was a child eating 4 dozen. The problem with this theory is that Gaston has been eating that many eggs for years so the towns supply would have adjusted for the extra eggs. The real problem would be when he died and all of a sudden there is a surplus of eggs crashing the market.
@GremlinSciences
@GremlinSciences 2 жыл бұрын
The supply wouldn't be so easy to increase, and the increase certainly wouldn't be without cost. Eggs are not like pearls, where taking them all has no negative effect on the producer, eggs are the way that chickens reproduce. So if all the eggs are constantly in extremely high demand, then there isn't likely going to be any room in production to increase the number of chickens. More chickens also means more feed is needed, and while chickens can get by on kitchen scraps and insects, that alone is only enough to support about 1 chicken for every 2 people. They could try buying from a neighboring town, but excess chickens are normally eaten rather than sold except when they're sold to be eaten, in which case they're normally no longer able to lay eggs and are only sold alive because preserving meat is expensive.

My info came from the book which I read in elementary school so I'm not sure how much made it into the movie but old canned peaches curing foot stink seems like the kind of wild thing this channel would find some truth to

This "controls that shield you" can make the problem worse. An example is California's water. It has subsidies to make water cheap and affordable. Nice, yes? But some towns turn in the taps certain times if the year and get zero water at all. This is because nobody rations the water the way they should, so suddenly entire neighborhoods wake up to zero water. The same market dynamic could potentially happen to eggs. The low price doesn't fix the supply issue. It just helps the consumer temporarily.
@christopherddrew7555
@christopherddrew7555 2 жыл бұрын
@@buckaroobonzai2909 The controls don't make our eggs cheaper, they actually make them more expensive in general. Canada has a lot of rules for importing eggs and dairy, meaning most of the eggs and dairy we use is local. In general we don't have access to US or EU dairy and egg products, which keeps our products costing more. But in this specific case, it has meant we don't rely on the global supply chains for eggs that have run into major issues, so our prices have not really gone up.

Love this episode! Hilarious that we went through literally every other geographical aspect of the movie before settling on the fact that Gaston does, in fact, eat a lot of eggs. But quick question, we saw in the live-action that Gaston is a war hero who just returned, and I don't recall ever hearing that Gaston grew up in the little town where Belle lives... Also, Gaston's entrance in the movie is him "returning" to the village after spending time away. Wouldn't it be more probable to attribute the economic failure (and possibly the lack of population) to the plague mentioned in the live-action (People dying; less labor to meet demand) instead of Gaston's stomach?

@Redhollow
@Redhollow 2 жыл бұрын
Not likely, it's not "breaking down food" like your stomach does so much as prepping it for the real digestion. Your stomach would still need to do the main work of processing the food. Tho I believe there are some chemicals and nutrients your body can utilize as soon as it hits your tongue? Like glucose gets processed real friggin fast. I've heard that saliva is effective at breaking down bread into usable sugar. So who knows, man. Would be a fun video.
