I know that if I were in a study, and a bowl of singular-colored candy was presented to me, I would be distracted by trying to figure out what the study was trying to discover, whereas being in a room with a bowl of normal distribution candy colors, I would assume they were just there as a bonus snack to help the subjects focus on the task at hand. Maybe that's a future theory too, "does eating while doing a task help you focus?"

When I was young I recall reading that British soldiers in WW2 would keep their green Smarties (a candy-coated chocolate like M&Ms) to throw into the grass when they returned home. Why? So their kids would spend the afternoon trying to find them, while dad was inside making up for lost time with mom. Tried to find a reference online, but can't find one. My favorite fact about M&Ms. Eddie van Halen would mandate that a bowl of M&Ms be put in the back room of the venue exactly in the middle of the room and there would be NO brown candies, and this is item 295 out of 541 of setting up a typical van Halen concert. If they messed up the candy, then van Halen suspected the pyrotechnics we're neglected too, and would just cancel the concert.
@ChanceTheBrony2 жыл бұрын
What’s sad is that I think a lot of people misinterpreted that fact back in the day, because “no brown M&Ms” has since become a trope establishing that a character is a diva, despite Van Halen having *genuine concern for his life* if something went wrong.

Some European perspective, if it's of any help: In my experience, we just don't use the "base" metaphors; we just say what we mean-- but we _are_ second-hand familiar with them because of American media. I just haven't experienced anyone using them sincerely/unironically. I've never heard anyone claim the green M&Ms to have any particular properties; and so, prior to watching this episode, I had just assumed it was a psychological thing, relating it back to the Green M&M from the advertising. If anything, the hot-ticket M&Ms over here (at least, in the UK) are the blue ones, because they disappeared from the market during... the 2000s, I think? Maybe the '90s?-- and when they came back, they made a HUGE deal out of it. Again, I think it had something to do with a connection being alleged between food-colouring and carcinogens.

My theory: A full bowl of vari coloured M&Ms could induce a sense of security thanks to the perception of choice. Participants may also have been in a better mood because the garish colours made them think it was a party and thus socially appropriate to let loose. Meanwhile, single coloured M&m bowls could have induce a manufactured sense of scarcity, which would make people hesitant to date since they wouldn't have the resources to finish the seduction process. All in all, I think the lighting results are polluted with the sugar results and social perception. It would have been better to isolate the colour variable
@eriwhomst2 жыл бұрын
i'm gonna be honest, i think you overcomplicated it. i don't think most people associate a full bowl of multi color m&m's with a party, but moreso a doctor's office. also idk if the scarcity part makes sense? realistically, one would think, "hmm, they're all one color, so clearly someone grabbed a fuckton of m&m's bags and kept only some colors." i think even i'm overcomplicating it. no hate btw, i just like debating theories

Here’s my theory: The bowls of the same colored candy definitely had something to do with color theory (maybe not all but at least a little). But my guess is that they also made the brain a little confused. You see, when you see an ad for m&m’s you see (usually) see all the colors, and so you kind of get used to it, anytime you see a bowl of same colored m&m’s its for a reason- its there to prove some sort of point (like in on the desk of a receptionist or something, hopefully that makes sense). But in conclusion it just doesn’t make sense to our brain is some way, like the uncanny valley of candy. Though I did see a theory on here saying something about the fact that they’d be suspicious is they walked in a room for an experiment and saw a bowl of same colored m&m’s there, they might wonder a little more what the experiment is about and get distracted. I could see this making sense in a way.

also, placebo is a thing. believing the green m&M's actually make you feel "something"
@gogauze2 жыл бұрын
This is one of the most understated and misunderstood things in pop science. Placebo reactions are a massive part of everyone's daily life, and they significantly impact our quality of life. The whole reason you give a placebo pill in the identical shape and color, in the exact same way, to a control group in a medical study, is because the expectation of the thing can, in part or in full, be causal to the thing. We don't want a medicine to just be better than nothing, we want it to be better than our perceptions can manipulate. A lot of folks think of the word as bad or dirty. It gets a lot of attention when something gets deemed to be "no more effective than a placebo," and folks who use or do those things don't respond well to being told the benefits they experience aren't real. The thing is, they probably are getting benefits. Like, if you grew up with your parents telling you that orange juice makes you better when you're feeling sick, you are very likely to actually get better. No joke, it frequently shortens your recovery and blunts your symptoms if you believe that. But we know for a fact that there are zero objective benefits from drinking orange juice compared to water and a few calories. How can those two things both be true? Because we don't actually deal with objective reality as much as we think we do. That's what science means when it mentions placebos. Your brain can take information and make your body do a bunch of things that don't seem like they should be possible. Those reactions are frequently belief based, and they do meaningfully help. They just aren't universal to every human. This is really just the tip of this iceberg. If it occurred to you that negative things could happen in the same way, you're absolutely right. And the sheer number of things a placebo reaction can do are not presently calculable. But it's a lot, and the differences are significant.

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

Here’s an idea to further iterate on this experiment: since you now know that a mix of colors produces better results than a bowl of just one colored candies, try running the experiment again with mixed bowls each time, but with two bowls where the mix has been artificially bloated with extra red or green M&Ms respectively. Consider doing the same for the other candy colors as well, just to see if there are any unexpected contenders.

You just reminded me of an experiment I did once, about 10 years ago: What happens when you combine Red Bull and instant coffee, and is the result greater than the sum of their parts? I took out a large mug, poured in one regular 8.4 oz. (250ml) can of Red Bull, then added 2 heaping teaspoons of coffee crystals, about what I drank every morning. At first, they refused to mix, and when I stirred, the liquid foamed up violently. I drank it all, despite my lizard brain telling me this did not look, smell, taste, or even FEEL safe. 30 minutes later, my eyeballs were vibrating and I had to consciously blink. I was certainly alert, though my ability to focus didn't feel much better or worse. I can't recall if there was a caffeine crash afterwards, but I do remember staying awake later than normal. So yes, I would be extremely interested to see this theory put to the test. I'm curious to know if the alertness helps or hinders focus, too, especially for the kind of work Team Theorist, and by extension, college students and the like, do. Would a person benefit from chugging a suspicious concoction of stimulants, or does it hurt more than it helps?

8:29 Matpat, as a man of the internet, I must say I'm disappointed in you. Everyone knows Danny Diveto is the sexiest man on earth, and Mars making the red M&M him was fully embracing that.

I love the dedication matpat gives to this kind of stuff, he does researchs to find out if a colorant can make you want to do "bad stuff"

It also depends on favorite colors as well, and whether or not the participants even like M&M's. It could also be as simple as the groups that got only red or only green were disappointed because they didn't get their favorite color of M&M's, whereas the group that got all the main M&M's colors weren't preoccupied with color, just excited to have chocolate candy. Variety is also the spice of life, after all. 😉 Also, everyone knows that the biggest M&M's let-down is that in spite of purple winning the "new M&M color" contest back in 2002 as well as there having been a history of purple M&M's prior and that purple would complete the rainbow, Mars still has yet to standardize it. PS: In my opinion, The blue M&M is the sexiest one, and he also represents the almond M&M's, which is more fancy than the peanut. He apparently also represented raspberry M&M's and dark chocolate M&M's. I don't know about you, but Dark Chocolate Almond Raspberry sounds amazing for a romantic dessert.
