Birds have died from fumes from nail polish remover, fumes from new carpeting, fumes from oven cleaner, fumes from oven liners. There is also teflon in self cleaning ovens, some blow dryers and irons. I threw out all of my teflon pans. Anything with fumes can pose a danger to birds, as their respiratory systems are so sensitive. That's why the miners would use a canary before they woud enter a coal mine. Thanks for posting this video, a lot of bird owners are not aware of these things!

VolkColopatrion Wow you're jumping to conclusions really fast. I was asking the question out of curiosity, I don't use teflon pans and haven't for years even before I had a bird. I was just wondering how dangerous it is. Yes my bird is lucky, because he's healthy, happy and in a good home, not because he's simply "alive". You don't need to have a shitty attitude like that, your first answer was plenty enough.

My cocktail Sunny liked to eat tomatoe stems, I did not know that it was poisonous untal one day I was extremely worried about how Sunny was acting. She was stiff and making funny noses and I was scared that she was not going to make it. The vet told me that I was poisoning her. And to let her eat and drink a lot to get the toxins out of her system. So I am so happy people like you are educating other bird owners. Thank you!

saba mehraj obviously im not her so i cant give you a for-sure accurate answer but from what she said and from what i know personally, it seems she basically just gave her lots to drink and eat so that the remaining stems could be flushed out of her system by all the new foods and fluids. also, i think its pretty safe to assume that she stopped feeding her the tomato stems as well😂 however im also curious if there was any sort of medication that the vet might have given her to help the process or if it was safe enough to just flush everything out like i said before.

I love your attitude, about teaching bird owners, not attacking them. I think about how much I've learned, and how happy I am with my little babies. If I didn't have that attitude and consideration from others, I would never have learned the things I have. Everyone has to start somewhere, so if we help them learn, their birds can find happiness faster. Most bird parents don't try to hurt their birds, they just haven't learned it yet.

Hi Marlene! I'm preparing to adopt a 60 year old sulfur crested and I've been doing lots of research. I'm so happy you touched on non stick pans as being toxic. I was wondering if you are familiar with the "green pan" it's like an alternative non stick pan. Is this toxic too? THank you so much for all your helpful tips! I can't wait to see more! :)
@keararanck1768 жыл бұрын
Marie Marco Hey! I have a green cheeked conure and we still use non-stick pans. We just make sure that we don't burn the food and that we have a screen door open and a vent system going. And we don't let her eat any of the food cooked on the pans. Another thing we do is take her away from the kitchen when we are cooking. Not sure about green pans... But I would just make sure your house is well ventilated before cooking at all.
@chaparama8 жыл бұрын
I chucked out all my non-stick cookware, teflon is so poisonous to birds. Why take the risk??? I use stainless steel and cast iron pans. And recently bought the vita verde green pan's so would be interested in other peoples opinions on them.
@MARLENEMCCOHEN8 жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, congratulations on your new bird, I hope you two get on well and that you are is forever home:) my dad is an engineer and he told me that all non stick pans are basically another form of Teflon, even if they don't call it Teflon, it is just another generic form. He said that there is no such thing as a non stick metal so any pan with that black non stick part has harmful materials.

Hey Marlene can you please answer this? Should I let my bird out? It’s been 4 weeks since I got my cockatiel, Smokie. He is unclipped. And if I should. How do I get him back in ( he is 0 tame by the way ) Looking for a reply from anyone. Thank you
@zachturner87455 жыл бұрын
TurquoiseBirbs I would say yes but there are a lot of factors. Not while you are cooking or while the burners are still hot. Not while windows are open or people are going in and out a lot. Generally, not in a situation where any danger is around. If you have a dog or a cat then this is not a good situation. I am a clip wings kind of person but mine are not clipped at this time. Just use extreme caution and always try to give them the step up command to bring them out of there cage. And my big no no is absolutely don’t let them hang out on top of there cage. They can not be above the height of you. It’s some kind of dominance thing. Have a lower play perch or play tower or something for them to be on. Just my thoughts!!!!

Zach Turner I have no control over this cuz I’m just a kid. All in all my grandpa does not want the bird out or inside the House. He seems to do MUCH happier than the petsore. He was in a tiny micro traveler cage with two others. But now he is in the biggest cage they sold. (I bet you would still say it’s small) but he’s hanging around outside in his cage enjoying the budgies in the huge cage and the scenery he gets to enjoy. Glad I could give him a better life. “If I just had more privileges, he would have been the buddy of my life... 😔😔
@graceandhaezel51975 жыл бұрын
Lil Feast I'd say no, find a way to get him clipped and maybe start slowly hand taming him. make sure to watch videos on how to tame a parrot and build up their trust. possibly try in a very safe situation (closed doors, windows, etc.) no other pets in the room if you are going to try (:

Pro tip to increase calcium: shells of hard boiled eggs ground to a fine dust. My parrot shop includes 1 shredded carrot and a half, about a quarter or raw cauliflower, handful of dill, 4 jalapeño peppers and one leaf of romaine lettuce and finely chopped raw eggplant. To all that I add two hard boiled eggs as a binding agent and pulverize the shells to a fine dust.

Is this still bad? And also we were giving him grapes for about 3 weeks because everywhere online it says they are safe for birds, it was his favorite treat. Our first visit to the vet the dr said they are toxic. We don't give them to him anymore but do you know anything about this, even though we are definitely going to listen to the vet as well.

I have some questions for you. My blue and gold macaw Quigley is 2 soon. But my question is how to get him to stop trying to regurgitate? Any time I try to give him head scratches or any type of interaction and he immediately starts trying to regurg. I have tried just walking away when he does it but it doesn't seem to phase him. He also tries to put my fingers in the corner of his mouth where his soft pads are and he applies pressure and starts bobbing away. Any advice to discourage these behaviors? It's pretty much the only thing he is interested in. Another question. When I ask him to step up on my arm, he willingly complies, but he always puts 1 foot on, pinches my arm with his beak (sometimes very hard) and then he puts the other foot up. Any advice there? And last question. I've been working with him to fly from my arm to his cage at varying distances. He's doing great except I can not get him to fly from his cage to me yet. Any tips? I saw your video where rocky flew away and that really struck a chord in me. So glad it ended well!

Just a warning if you get another budgie if they do not bond with each other you will have to buy another cage for them and also be careful when pairing two birds together because some birds (even the small ones like budgies) have killed its "mate" or friend. I am no expert but Marlene did make a video about this topic if you wanted to know more. I think it was called "should I get my bird a mate? 13 things to know before getting a second parrot." Not all birds hate each other and I'm not saying that you shouldn't get another budgie, just maybe do some research if you haven't already on how to bond two birds together Have a wonderful day! :) Olivia

I forgot to mention if you do only end up getting one, make sure you spend a lot, (and I mean a lot) of time with him so he doesn't get lonely or sad and that could cause him to become depressed or start plucking his feathers. So I think I’m planning on buying a parakeet and I’m pretty sure my mom has at least 2 nonstick pans, when you use those do they release toxins into the air or is it just the pan itself that they can’t go near? Or like if food is cooked on there? My room also is about 6 yards away from the kitchen and I normally keep my door closed and fan on, would the parakeet be safe in my room? I’ve also heard that you shouldn’t keep them alone at all but I’ve heard that it’s better to bond w them if they’re alone so I was wondering which choice is better? (I go to school from 8-3:30 and rarely leave my house)

I’ve always heard about Teflon pans but what exactly down to the detail happens with it? And if you can’t use non stick, then what would be a great alternative also without having your food stick to your pans? Maybe I know other kinds of pans and it’s just not coming to mind right now. Thanks in advance!
@Just-me2336 жыл бұрын
Do your research if used right the pans without non stick won't stick lower heat is one way little oil many ways to cook if you watch chefs you see that they don't normally use non stick at all

Can't you cut the fruit/vegetable/food (i'm talking about fruit mostly) into slices will it still effect them? If you take the pit out, and then you cut the like cherry pit or cut the cherry starting from the top then slicing around the side, bottom, other side, then meeting the top where you made the first slice and sticking your knife in the pit or use a silverware or your finger to get the pit out depending on how hard it is/ as big as a avocado or peach or mango. Will this still effect you bird? Not that I have one I really want one though!
@Haizme7 жыл бұрын
Avocado is terrible for your bird. Because the skin and oily pit have toxins that can get in the flesh. However apples can be sliced, same for cherry's. Just keep the seeds away from them. I give my chickens a bit of apple or cherry sometimes (although mine prefer zucchini, tomato and spinach over fruits)

why take the chance? the oil is going to be all through out and you don't know if it's cleaned properly and you can make a mistake. best to avoid it all together. Why take a chance on anything except a slot machine or a poker table?

Theres an app i use to identify the different plants and trees, because my mother is a gardener and in spring she pulls the flowers off plants that are a bit early..it helps the plant put more into its groth vut my bird loves them..he is 12 months..a year old on the 27th so his taste is getting easier ive spent a year trying to figure out what he likes...but where getting there steaming a lot of the veg was huge to his diet ..no one was talking about it..now he gets lotas of the right stuff..and all treat food is given in training...he has been free flight trained since about a month after he learned he could fly ..mind id been training him before he ever got lift so he was about 4/5 months when we could carry on his training while letting him out to fly off line..there training especially regarding free flight never ends .and every different bird touvtrain will be so different and will all teach you as well...I love working out how a mother macaw might teach something...i just have to help him with comands he understands, like if he is in a tree and the branches are teiggy so wont take his weight he knows the comand for up or down but we have never needed to use that from a ttee..thats 1 of a million things you have to support and give them the tools to figure stuff out..hin mom could show him ..but he loves to fly..its looking like it will be a nice day today hes been stuck in the house because of stormy weather so he is like a wound up spring today..theres a few shorts of him on my channel..

I hate to say this but my sulphur-crested cockatoo loves Ellios frozen Pizza. I give him a one-inch strip once a week . He eats the cheese and sauce off the crust then drops it. It doesn't seem to hurt him I don't know about long-term but I don't think once a week is going to hurt him. I also give all my birds scrambled eggs once a week and I fortify that with all kinds of fillings like couscous quinoa crumbled up Cheerios whole wheat no sugar, I also will take Supreme parrot pellets and grind them up and mix them in scrambled eggs. I also make pancakes for my birds from whole wheat and eggs mixed with other grains and cereal they love it.

If birds are kept in a completely separate room far from the kitchen, and the kitchen is well ventilated, can non-stick pans be used or should they really be avoided altogether?
@DizzyDoob8 жыл бұрын
flyingzebracakes just be sure to have it ventilated and keep your Bird in a different room and you should be good. but why take the chance? maybe have a outside cage for your Bird and whenever u cook just take him outside. My birds love to be outside.
@flyingzebracakes8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely keep the outdoor cage in mind.

I truly am terrified of non stick pans. I wouldn't want to wonder if it was my pan, if anything ever happened to the bird. The other thing is guests will never take the same care you will so if you have visitors or in-laws it's just better to be safe.
@flyingzebracakes8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for responding! I have a year or more to plan for a potential bird if I do decide I'm ready for that commitment, so I will definitely keep this in mind and cycle out my non-stick pans for better options as I am able to.

@@MARLENEMCCOHEN it also has to be heated in high temperatures. Like around 560°f/300°C. It stilk should be ventilated.
