For all those interested the word soccer derives from Association Football a sort of play on words of the "ssoc" bit of association. It's pretty much always been called Football in England, and we started it so that's all that matters. But some areas here did say soccer, mainly in the rugby dominant parts of the country and it comes from our word so we have to shoulder some of the blame. The USA also had a game they call football... it's sort of like a wimps version of rubgy... we call it American Football. It was only really the USA that ever called it soccer just to differentiate... but a few other lesser nations might have followed given the dominance of American pop culture especially in the newer nations.
