Have you reviewed the the Richard Francis Weymouth New Testament translation? I think it’s called WNT or WEY. I’d never heard of it until it was quoted the other day as being a more accurate translation for 2Peter: 2-4. It is quite different from that verse in my other bibles. I thought I’d come here and ask because I am still learning and not equipped to make comparisons. I can’t find any reviews on this translation but if it is reliable I’d like to get a copy.

Is it simply that Weymouth transliterated the Greek term "Tartarus" into English rather than translating it as "hell"? A few modern translations have tried this, but it hasn't caught on because it seems to cause more confusion than clarity. For instance, the HCSB read "Tartarus," but it was switched to "hell" in the CSB. However, the primary U.S. Catholic translation, the NABRE, still uses "Tartarus" (as does the WEB). A few translations use an English word other than "hell" to distinguish it from the term "Gehenna." For instance, the LSB says "the pit," and the NJB and CEB use the term "the underworld." Most modern translations (RSV, NASB, NIV, NKJV, NLT, ESV, CSB) say "hell" in the text and "Tartarus" in the footnotes.

Hello, thanks for the great review! I'm interested in this Bible, but not necessarily for myself. Hear me out: My husband and I are pretty new to the church we're now attending. The adult Sunday school is just one class and attendance fluctuates but seems very low (at least as to the ratio of people who attend 11:00 a.m. Sunday services). I think this would be a fantastic resource to the guy who leads the class. Is it inappropriate for me to give him a copy of this Bible? I don't want to upset his wife or send the wrong message! Maybe I should just buy it and use it during S.S. myself? Thanks again. PS: Greetings from a frigid Eagle River, Alaska!
