I wish this could be seen by so many more people in this country to understand what the Armed Forces do for them and why their funding needs to be supported, especially as his was only the tip of the iceberg! Could do hours on the full list, including foreign air policing of the allies who stand first in the path protecting us with their own land, protection of the Falkland Islands and our fellow citizens out there, counter-piracy to protect the things we all buy, mine-hunting within crucial trade lanes in the Gulf that brings the fuel we all use, counter-terrorism to protect us on home lands and abroad, natural disaster ready units to counter storms and flooding on our shores and riverlines, Search and Rescue support in Cyprus and the Falklands, foreign training to our allies to better prepare them and strengthen our global presence by being amongst other prepared nations, defence industries bringing money and work to the nation, Red Arrows carrying the UK's image to the entire world, a nuclear deterrent that has stood in the way of any aggression for decades crewed by men and women who give up years of their lives to live in a small tube, support training with the police to help counter significant events from as malicious as intense looting to something as simple as helping staff the Olympics, Highland protection response to help out small communities if the winter cuts them off...

We need to be spending billions more on our armed forces,this video doesn’t mention the personnel shortages,old & outdated equipment & capability gaps. Could we retake the Falklands if it was invaded now? The answer is probably not. We need to have the ability to operate world wide independently & not be reliant on others for assistance.
@hamishdavidson17147 жыл бұрын
wouldn't need to retake it, the Argies couldn't take in the first place, they've got fuck all amphibious capabilities and their troops r only really able to protect Argentina they aren't equipped for an invasion, we also have a much larger Royal Marine presence and constant naval patrols + a few fighters based on the island, i wouldn't worry especially when the carrier/carriers r equipped and in service
@MrTangolizard7 жыл бұрын
admiralpicard2010 so what capabilities do u think the uk has lost since 1982 that makes that statement true, we are still able to amass a force of that size the only difference is the capabilities now of these ships is greater obviously we would have to wait until PW is finished but I think the sortie rate on Queen Elizabeth is far higher than our 1982 pocket carriers so with just one it is more capable than the 2 we sent in 82
@tanyard7 жыл бұрын
The argument is not if the UK could retake the Falklands, it's if Argentina could, which it can't... The Argies have, Most of their navy in port needing maintenance, No amphibious assault capability, A mostly grounded fighter/attack jet fleet made up of about 30 1970's aircaft, No much of a better economy then what they had in 1982, and more. On the Falklands alone right now the UK has, 1,200 Marines, Army engineers, and RAF pilots, as well as a few hundred Falklands Defence Force personnel (army trained citizen islanders) A dedicated 1,200 tonne patrol ship permanently based there, Regular visits from RN frigates, destroyers and ice breakers, with usually an SSN in the South Atlantic, 4 Typhoon jets, 2 transport helicopters and regular trips by C-130's and Voyagers, and more. I'd easily say that just 1 Type 45 with Aster 15/30 and Harpoon missiles, and a submerged SSN could take out the whole Argentina navy in a few days. The biggest problem would probably be having to locate the fleet and make sure the RN vessels have enough missiles and torpedo's on board! Argentina's 40 year old fleet of roughly 30 working turbo prop COIN jets are no match for even the 4 Typhoons on the Islands. This is Argentina's best jet: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FMA_IA_58_Pucar%C3%A1 This is their best naval ship class, lacking spare parts and with out of date ordinance: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almirante_Brown-class_destroyer

admiralpicard2010 seems the trend for most advanced militaries is troop number reduction. In 20 years we will be sending robots to fight. I just watched a robot do a back flip and parkour. We are going to have less troops, more technicians/engineers. Only way it can go. Money saved on wages would buys more hardware. Some nations are burdoned by troops salaries. Dont think we should sack soldiers though. Should be done naturally over time.

National Service isn't the answer. Ever work with a conscript army? You might end up with more troops but I wouldn't want to fight beside any of them, most of them just don't want to be there. Oh and that has a knock on effect, sprinkle miserable gits into a good body of troops and the misery spreads like a fucking yeast infection. The number of troops is entirely down to the government: 1. Making it hard to join. 2. Making a career in the military look like a non-starter. 3. Letting serving members down so they leave (lower retention = need to recruit more people). 4. Deliberately shrinking the size of the armed forces.
@dernwine7 жыл бұрын
Switzerland is very much in it's own unique situation too though. Conscription for them does not mean military life as the country is small enough that people can commute to their bases. It is also a country that has not been to war for god knows how long, and it's army doesn't need to be put to the test. Also what the moral is like within Swiss units (or what their level of professionalism is like) is unkown to me, I do remember what people being drafted into the Bundeswehr where like though, one of my friends tried to fake mental issues to avoid having to go, trust me you do not want people with that attitude in your army if you can avoid it. "create regiments for them and transfer them to existing regiment*" again that would be poison. You know very well that people would be transferred based on checks in the box not on their personalities, and any CoC would be hopping to get rid of the people they don't want. And if you are going to have a conscript army that you don't use and a regular army that you do use... what's the point of the conscript army? Besides draining MOD finances that could be spend on the regular army. Nice to know that you are serving, you're not the only one ;)
@dernwine7 жыл бұрын
But the central point was: National Service isn't what is needed, what is needed is a government that funds the armed forces properly and takes defence seriously.

When you think about the size of a peace time army VS what we saw in WW2 on a total war footing it's crazy. The amount of people in the entire UK Armed Forces at the moment is but a tiny fraction of what it was at one point. First off I just want to say that I spent 11 yrs in the US army with 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. I have served with a few British soldiers in Iraq and wanted to say that they are very professional and good soldiers. It just sucks that the British military is so badly funded and that the British military is so incredibly small. I didn't realize just how small the British military really was till I looked it up. As of right now the UK military only has a total of 146,000 thousand active duty soldiers!!! That is extremely small. The US Marine Corp, which is by far the smallest branch of the US military has around 220,000 thousand. The British army has 81,000 soldiers, the US army has close to a million if you count it's reserve components. The UK only has 227 MBTs (tanks), the US has over 8,000! If I was British I would be upset with the politicians because they have gutted the British military.

Do the Army have any tanks or just a couple of old Land Rovers with Bren guns on ?
@127cmore5 жыл бұрын
Yes , I confirm they definitely have 2 old Landies with guns...…... only to be used in a major crisis though ,as struggling to push out a leaky aircraft carrier we cant afford to run.

When politicians boast on spending an extra say 2% on defence and fail to mention that that includes a pay rise.

We do have a compliment of tanks to go overseas which is good. Unfortunately we are wide open for attack from any nation therefore we need plenty tanks and armaments to guard British isles
