Given the recent cut's in the manpower of the British Army- how can an ISTAR unit operate with effect when there are fewer and fewer troops in their rear backing them up? In the 1984 exercise Lionheart in Germany, practicing to re-inforce the British Army ferried 750 main battle tanks across the Rhine on mobile bridges. In comparison the British Army plans for 128 tanks now.

Because the days of large scale warfare is over mate. Tanks are some of the most vulnerable pieces of equipment on the battlefield in the modern era. Large formations of troops it’s not 1940 anymore mate. Conventional warfare is pretty much over no major power will go to war with one another it’s all about small scale highly equipped units that can pack a big punch. We in the era of counter terror operations tanks are useless in those types of operations.

@@WAzzzUUppp And history as you describe can not repeat itself? Either way, what constitutes the term "large scale" in warfare is still there even though large to day and large 40 years ago i probably not the same in numbers. There will always be a certain quality in quantity it self. I doubt for example the Royal Navy would be able to loose the same numbers of ships they did in the Falklands, and still function as a force. Just look what happened in Ukraine and more recently in Nagorno-Karabakh , if you static and have to use more then a Minute to setup and take down your dead period.

Nice in theory however in practice its a different story ie you cant return fire to a location in a known residential area with civilian populations located, ie just like issues met in Iraq & Afghanistan then also mortar & rocket positions also didn't sit & stay in positions long enough for any return fire (except for some large scale AA fixed positions etc also for said equipment to be even remotely effective/efficient it really needs to be man portable, as per mentioned teamed by specialists rather then stock troops, as mission requirements don't meet the personnel skill sets ie this is more of a role for 'forward observers & potentially the ranger regiment' better still having equipment mounted on drones would be far better & limit detection & attack, it would also give a further reach... sorry to say this just looks like yet another idea not thought-out very well
@SpratLabs3 жыл бұрын
Thinking more on conventional warfare and near-peer threats as we are now, it still certainly applies. Also, as the Sgt said, it still saved lives on tour in Afghan/Iraq, by detecting incoming IDF and providing advanced warning to seek cover.
@malp62803 жыл бұрын
@@SpratLabs sure this will help locate a portable mortar group..... until they move, which we've seen thousands of times in theatre the term "shoot & scoot" springs to mind. also the it helps ppl seek cover... ok, only what if its a high explosive 88mm or greater round coming into a companies compound.... as you still don't know where its going to land as mortar & artillery rounds aren't accurate weapon systems, not forgetting larger shells if directly hitting a structure "usually" ppl die.. its only by chance your not a under a direct strike.. also as shown & a sensible troop states such role for the detection systems the troops involved need a higher degree of training, weapons, fitness etc again opting for the more specialised groups "forward observers & special forces" the basic troop groups are easy targets & training is pretty poor to incredibly bad. also the tactics witnessed Iraq & Afghanistan you can see conventional defences & attacking/patrolling methods fail, just they did in Vietnam & other war torn nations, including the military fight on drug productions.... hence why you see high kill rates for the opposing forces against our troops. we also then look at terrain, such equipment is wasted in Afghanistan where even satellite communications struggle let alone radio, person coms.. what chance will this equipment have in such environment's "little to none" however having such equipment as a base defence in a open area could help to a degree... then again you look at the price & think.... having aerial equipment to detect such threats make more sense & is less venerable to attack.... also trying to make claims of how sensitive such equipment is I'm sorry but its simply not true, this system cant detect fist sized threats.. I can even point a finger at the american air defence threat system which utilises a minigun & thousands of explosive rounds which detects rocket attacks (rockets bigger then a RPG before you say).. teh 2ns system you see using microphones that's been out for a while & isn't fantastic, that's aimed more towards artillery & vehicle mounted systems & the audio signatures produced..

@malp62803 жыл бұрын
@@tmm32x yes the smaller system is portable its also incredibly limited, overall useless. again its got its limitations due to terrain etc as per the other systems it also adds alot of danger to those sent out to position the sensors. again where by aerial units are less prone to detection & can stay on station for longer whilst also maintaining a 360degree scanning field overall my point! this system is poorly thought out & those set to operate are not trained nor equipped to support the safe use, nor can they maintain these set-up for extended periods of time safely,, in comparison to other assets/units. not forgetting most are suited for detecting large munitions as opposed to what's claimed as that's total rubbish.
