I agree wholeheartedly with you, and those were 90k miles of HARD WORK as well. It’s nice to finally see the face behind the voice on your videos. I am subscribed to over 160 KZbin channels and your channel is the one I get the most excited to see. Always good content, always educational and always spot on. Thanks Arod, more mechanics should be like you. Corporate Ford should see these videos and offer you a job in diesel product development or that guy that gets these motors when they are returned to get dissected and analyzed for future improvements. If I was the CEO of Ford I would have people like you advising my engineers and making recommendations. Thanks again. And Ford if you are reading this take a hint, it’s blue shirts like this guy that really help to keep you on top.

I can say after being in the automotive field before myself the type of technician that ARod is, is the technician everyone hopes is working on their car. The answer to your question of how many oil changes is at least 19-20 times depending on if you use the 5000 miles or 200 hrs. The 200 hrs interval could be a lot higher depending on how long they let it idle.

If you want to extend your oil change intervals than you better be getting your oil analyzed! Start at 5k to get the break-in oil out of there, and get a sample and see where you're viscosity is. If you're within range, you can maybe bump that up to 7,500 miles and then get another oil sample and go from there. My wife's 22 Navigator has the high output Ecoboost and at just over 5k miles her oil shows it's sheared to the next lower level from where it began. I believe I have heard that is a byproduct of the design of the piston rings, and doesn't have anything to do with the oil. It is afterall, a high performance, twin turbo motor so no worries, oil and filter are cheap compared to tearing down a motor and seeing wear on your bearings, etc.

I purchased a 2011 at 160k miles. I'm already at 3 oil changes at 165k. 1st was a good flush, 2nd was because I replaced valve cover, injector seals, and now the 3rd upper oil pan gasket and turbo base gasket. Not saying it's right, but first thing I did was smell the oil before buying the truck. You can tell quickly how well it was taken care of.

I work at a private diesel shop. Absolute ton of can and chassis engines locked up. A friend of mine was driving one and it did it without warning whatsoever. I pulled one down that was on the verge of doing it Had a very bad knock. Torn down to find every single bearing on the crank, rod and main, we’re severely overheated and spun. I begin to wonder if it is actually lack of maintenance or abuse or if there is another factor at play

Every 5000 miles, it gets new oil and fuel filters. Fuel filters are cheap enough on line to do every oil change. I had water in fuel and the sensor didn’t come on, and drained about 4 oz of water out. Never again! Test fuel before I fill the tank, and drain the water separator once a month.

If the people maintaining that cab and chassis are used to heavy duty diesel engines they run much longer intervals. We run our tractor engines 500-600 hrs per oil change and oil samples come back good. Modern semi truck engines can run 20,000-30,000 miles per oil change, but they also have 3x the oil capacity. I could easily see an f650 being maintained on the same schedule as a semi with 20k oil changes, even though its not correct. Just my thoughts. I have been following the oil change light on my ‘20 6.7 and it usually nets 5-6k miles and 250-300 hrs depending on how much driving in the fields I do.

My 2010 has 125k miles and that's what I've done. Only issues so far was egr and eventually non working parts fall off. My oil doesn't smell burnt at 8-10k miles. And with oil analysis it doesn't have anything in it. My semi's are 20-30k miles like the manufacturer requires

I have a 2017 F250 that is a hot shot rig, that I purchased with 15K on it and two years later it has a little over 150K, and I pull a triple axle 48ft goose neck that is 9K empty every single week, so depending what vehicles Im running I sit around 23-25k. I change my oil every 10K with shell rotella and ford fuel filters every 20K, I also always get diesel at Loves or Pilot so I have the best chance of getting good quality diesel. I have the oil checked at Blackstone Labs every 50K and the samples I send in always have right around 10K to this day the lab tech always states I have at least 2500-3k left on my oil before it even starts to show any signs of needing to be changed. We have talked in depth about running synthetic and he said from all his samples all over the country from work trucks and individual vehicles no matter the brand....Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke....plain old Shell Rotella has been the best and sees no reason to pay extra for synthetic. He also stated there may be a difference in extreme mileage between oils changes 20-25K however he has not seen it. I do not baby my truck but I do not abuse it either and I maintain it relgiously, I let the engine come up to proper running temp and never run it hard until it is fully up to temp. I have not had one single issue from day 1, not 1. I have owned 3 cummins trucks ( 07 5.9, 11 6.7, and a 16 6.7 ) the engines always run flawless however I had issues with transmissions and other electrical things. I ran a 16 Duramax LML for over 110K towing the same trailer for two years, same maintanance schedule, same oil....not a single issue but it def does not pull or the trans feel near as solid as the Ford. In my opinion the Ford has the best engine / trans combo out there, yes its much better than the L5P and allison 10 speed as a whole. I agree Cummins is the best engine however, the engine is only one piece of the puzzle...you have trans, emissions components, electrical.....even with the CP4.2 in the Ford I still believe it is the best. Most of my friends have new ram 3500 HO with the Aisin which seems to be pretty stout however it shifts like shit and is terrible to drive unloaded, lethargic power, detuned / sporatic shifts, no where near the power and confidence I have in my SuperDuty, yes the engine brake sucks compared to the cummins no doubt about it. Just my opinion but I have owned all three and towed heavy over 100K with all three and the Ford just stands above them all which going straight from one truck to another....and this is coming from a die hard Cummins guy.

I`ve never worked on the newer diesels but I worked on all diesels until 1992. All of them had high capcity oil sumps, in the range of 11 gallons or so with large and sometimes multiple filters. Back in those days a n14 cummins made 444hp same as the 6.7 fords, Turn up the power turn down the engine life. I agree with you completely about maintenence, those little engines at that power level ( if I bought the truck) would get the oil changed at 3000/miles. oil is reletively cheap compaired to a new engine...........but what do I know?

My company has bought nothing but Fords for about 50 years. I get to drive a company truck. Each month I get an email that says “how many miles on your unit?” If I want to drive my truck I have to give them this data. They then input that into fleet software and often I’ll get a note that says “time for an oil change”. And I have to go get it done. No choice. Doesn’t cost me anything. I take it to a local place that can get me in and out in 10 min and all I do is sign papers. They send that info and an invoice to my fleet guys. We don’t allow Full Synthetic. Just standard normal oil. BUT we want oil changes to go no more than 5,000 miles. It is GREAT to work for this company because our owner says “you should never have bad tools and trucks are tools and I expect you to maintain them so they are always in working order”. And he means it. What’s great is that at “end of fleet life” we can buy old trucks before they go to auction if we want. We get to buy them at 80% of current valuation. Since they are so well maintained it makes sense to buy them. I am currently driving around in an old 2007 F250 shop truck with a 5.4 Triton that has 130,000 miles on it. The bed is beat to hell and it rattles a lot but it starts and runs smooth. Great brakes. We always require trans oil changes and coolant flushes. So this truck still has a lot of life left in it. It should have gone to auction years ago but it’s servicing as a great shop / mechanic truck. I may buy it just to have as a beater. I bet I can get this thing to 250k miles. I was just scooting around my property in 4wd and it crawls like a beast. So yes. MAINTAIN YOUR DAMN TRUCKS. It is sacrilegious to let them die early. So avoidable.

It's not uncommon for people to extending oil changes. A lot of times it's all up to some bean counter at the company who reads some magazines based on otr trucks that encourage fleet managers to extend oil drain intervals to increase profits. Unfortunately, they don't spend as much time on doing oil analysis testing.

So I bought a used 23 F350 with 1500 miles. During the sale the dealership said they would gold certify it. Part of the gold certification is changing the oil and filters. Soooo my question is I still have a black fomoco filter. Is that the factory filter? Did they actually change the oil like they said they did?

My shop...we don't work on many diesels...but the Ford ones...especially the 6.0/6.5/6.7 Powerstrokes...we recommend a 8,000Km interval on the sticker and we got real smart...only use Motorcraft Powerstroke diesel oil that Ford specifies and also Motorcraft filters...with how pricey these things are for replacement we simply don't screw around. Never had a engine failure...yet.

We do fleet testing with black stone labs. Not only can you learn your actual service intervals, but you can catch catastrophic failures before they happen based on the trace metals. On top of that, we run Amsoil dual remote with bypass filters. There are some engines that run 20K miles on an interval, there are others that only run 5K. We tested all the major brands with the lab and it was absolutely worth the price. Thanks for the video! We've dealt with it because people don't care for things they don't own and aren't responsible for

Oil and filters are cheap. I did my old 7.3 at 5000 miles / 200 hr intervals with lab samples each change, and am continuing that on my 6.7HO. Yeah, having the IOM is nice, but as far as I'm concerned, that is speccing changes to get the engine through warranty, not to get it through 20 years. A pail of T6 0w40 is $200cdn, Motorcraft filter is $40-50cdn, lab sample kit is $25. That's 5.5 cents per mile. Bloody cheap insurance.

HEUI its idiot proof. you'll have a motor left and itll just shut off if its leaking oil somewhere ofcourse unless its running away.

“All being work trucks.” Yup. When I had a fleet patrol car, nobody gave two sh*ts about the check engine light, oil change interval, etc. (except the fleet guys and they were destined for failure because nobody gave a damn). When I got my first take home unit, assigned to me and only me, I put my own spark plugs in it, did my own synth oil changes, pretty much did my own maintenance of my “personal” work vehicle. And you know what? I left that vehicle is such a good shape that my partner went out of his way to have that unit assigned to him when I was promoted. Big difference in mentality between “somebody else’s problem” and “my problem”. Good video!

Not sure what to think of that person tbh lol, maybe a space cadet. I went 7,000 miles sent a sample to black stone labs.they recommend 9,000 oil change not sure how I feel about it. I’m typically a 5,000 mile OCI guy. Everybody said I changed my oil to early. I don’t want to change it with no additives left, but don’t want to throw money down the drain. I use Rotella T6 5w-40 as I live In Arizona where it gets to 120+ for 4 months. What’s y’all’s thoughts? Thought about just doing 7,000-7,500 with annual oil analysis

Had an early 2000s navigator with the DOHC 5.4 get towed in with a loud slapping noise coming from the engine. Upon further review found an intake cam seized and a broken timing chain. Engine still had the filter on it from the assembly plant. 60,000 miles. Safe to say that went customer pay really fast.
