I did the same drain and fill on my 2013 Ford Escape at 50,000 miles. If I’d know sooner I would have done this at 30,000 miles. The fluid came out clear red at first and then it started to come out darker. When I poured the fluid into the container that I was using, I noticed a lot of metallic particles. You will want to do this at least 3 times. It was after the third time I did the drain and fill that there was no more metal particles. These metal particles are in between your gears causing heat, noise and wear n tear. My car ran quieter, shifted smoother with less hard shifts going uphill and my MPG improved. This transmission “6F35” has a 9 quart capacity. When you drain it however, only about 4 quarts comes out. If you do the math, it’s about 3 drain and fills to remove most of the old fluid. I drove the car a few days in between the drain and fills. You don’t have to but I did use ProLong transmission treatment. I used the same Valvoline synthetic Mercon LV fluid. You can use Motorcraft also. I didn’t use Motorcraft because I could not verify that it was a synthetic fluid. It’s probably very good and has additives specifically for this transmission but synthetic was important to me. I work at a Ford dealer and have access to lots of info but I couldn’t verify anywhere that Motorcraft was or wasn’t synthetic. I have 100,000 miles right now and I’m going to do another 2 or 3 drain and fills. Depending how the fluid looks. The issue he mentions is a sticking front piston if my memory serves me. It will prevent it from going into gear, specifically to drive at the start.

It doesn’t matter if you overfill it because you let it run out to a drip. If you remove 4 quarts it’s best to add 4.25 back in and let any excess drain out after it’s been driven for a bit and is checked while running and hot.

On newer cars, the transmission fluid will turn dark like that real fast. Not sure how many miles are on this car but that’s normal. I have a 2014 Ford Escape with 137,000 miles. I was not aware that transmission fluid changes also needed to be performed on top of regular oil changes. With that said, should I perform a transmission fluid drain and fill at this point? I spoke with a Ford Technician who mentioned that it may be best not to. However, I find it odd to just continue driving with old fluid. Increasing the chance of something happening. There is so much back and forth on this topic. Any professional thoughts?

Maintenance is the key to longevity, especially with a transmission that has no 'routinely serviceable' filter. Of course they say don't change the fluid, because WHEN the trans fails, it's a couple thousand dollars of percentage commission paid service. My personal opinion, I would do a drain and fill with Mercon V approved fluid, drive it for and oil change interval, then do it again. DO NOT have a service department do a flush. That's just asking for bad things to happen. Doing a drain and refill introduces new, clean fluid little by little and doesn't artificially push fluid through the system like a power flush would with the equipment they use.

Serviced my wife's 2018 escape trans at 38,000 KM (26,000 miles) for the first time and it came out looking exactly like your fluid. Using Amsoil signature series trans fluid, had good luck with it so far. I am going to start changing it every second year (10-15K KMS) because that fluid obviously picks up a lot of contamination. Oh yeah the PTU gear oil was cooked as well... Then there is the rear differential fluid that is extremely hard to replace. Not a fan of servicing this car that is for sure, real pain in the butt.

The PTU is synthetic 75W-140 gear oil and it’s very important to change it at the same interval because it has less than 1 quart capacity and is exposed to a lot of heat from the turbo; transmission and exhaust because it is located in the middle of them all.

Thank you for the video! If the 6F35 transmission is so vulnerable, why doesn't Ford mandate an oil change? Why does Ford/GM build converter transmissions without a replaceable filter at all? That's negligent. Are the transmissions from other manufacturers such as ZF or Mercedes worse that they install a replaceable oil filter or what is the point here? Is it a cost issue?

Also had an front drive axel/cv boot replaced a year ago. Don't see any visible leaks. Dealer in Atlanta wants car for 3 days to diagnose. If they think it is in the trans, it will take 8 weeks to get evaluated. Then however long to replace or fix trans. Would it be advised to just start w a trans fluid replacement and see what happens? @@JrZCarZthis is true. I laugh at the people who drive Hondas and Toyotas and think their cars are superior quality. All you have to do is google any of the automakers whether it’s Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, Audi, you name it, and ever single one of them have premature engine and transmission failures and other problems on top of that. These days it’s all built as disposable junk. And the government preaches saving the environment but turns a blind eye to all this waste that is bad for the environment. Why? Because they love collecting the tax revenues on new car sales and all the parts required to fix stuff. It’s the same with household appliances. They used to literally last decades without breaking down. Nowadays if you get 10 years from those, consider yourself lucky. I wish someone would start a company to produce genuine high quality appliances and another for high quality, durable vehicles. It would make the others smarten up!

@@newfie-dean5803you are so right! The ones talking about saving the environment are the same hypocrites pushing for this disposable technology that keeps raking in the bucks.

The majority of manufacturers are doing this now. My 08 Honda Odyssey has the same, and so did my 07 Pontiac Torrent

At least it has a drain plug.

That's definitely true! At least it's not these garbage 'lifetime' sealed non-servicable units that they have planned obsolence to make you buy a new trans or new car every couple years. Cars now are throw away items instead of being able to keep them for a long while with preventative maintenance. It's all about that money.....

So you wouldn't buy another Ford because you have to maintain it? I'm not following your logic.....
