Looking good Dave - working on yet another Escort here - a customers 90's RS2000, in for floor, sills & general stuff. Have to say the earlier models are a doddle compared to when you hit the 90's versions - totally different beasts to weld on. Broke out the fire-extinguisher for the first time ever here today - never once had to before - this yokes a tinderbox as someone (too late) doused every cavity with waxoyl or some such, long after the rust had set in. By "doused" I mean absolutely flooded - every spot of welds a fire but one "spot" took off nicely, causing panic - I never panic, lol - I did today. Quite the bonfire kicked off up inside the A pillar.. :-) Never a good look.
@jamesward5721

BTW - for small bits like that door repair, a die grinder with a carbide burr is dead handy - you can carve back fast right to the edge of where the grot stops without the limitations of a cutting disc - every shape is possible. Its also great for plunge-cutting into small rot-spots to get shut of them/enlarge them for a patch. Be lost without mine. :-) Also - this will bore everyone - I discovered a "weird" hack for welding sketchy modern Ford steel - the stuff that nothing welds. Heartbreak material. Welders will know. It works amazing, absolute game-changer - I use 0.8mm flux core, so this only applies to that: 1. Bang the amp setting to the lowest, full anti-clockwise. 2. Bang the voltage knob fully clockwise - have it on both stops. 137V in my case, 40 amps. In theory that setting should be absolute pish & ought weld nothing. However - I have no clue what the science is (ish)- it welds pish Ford steel beautifully. Don't ask me how or why, no idea, but it works & can absolutely save you struggling for days trying to weld rubbish steel that refuses to weld on any normal parameters.

great work as always Dave that method of fixing wing after door fitted certainly worked well!! not a criticism but looked like your door pins were thick wall ones...........I have used in the past and they are a pig to fit and worse to get out!!! so I use thin wall stainless ones that a guy sells on eBay same dimensions as the original ford ones but don't rust. keep up the fab content Dave its great viewing.

Hello Dave, i finished restoring my 1989 Mk3 Transit pop top campervan nearly a year ago and used a few types of zinc sprays and all seems good, when the weather breaks going to start on my 1982 Capri 2.8i (been in a lock up 31 yrs) so nothing like my Transit or your Escort rust wise, if when you can, can you show the rust effects on the panel you used to test the zinc sprays, It showed Halfords held up well, be interesting to see results, many thanks, keep the great videos coming.

Dave, you would be doing me a big favour if you could tell me what that 2k brush on paint is. For many, many, reasons I am considering brush painting a car who's life I want to prolong. What exactly would I have to ask for? i.e. what manufacturer?, acrylic,? enamel? Is it readily available? I know some of the purists said, in the comments section, that they were going to ex-communicate you if you brush painted the whole car. It may take more time in, terms of finishing, but I really don't see the problem, if it look's good in the end.
@DavesGarageuk
@DavesGarageuk 6 ай бұрын
Hi, it's nothing out of the ordinary, not "brush on 2k" just normal 2k paint. I don't know the manufacturer, I use a local paint supplier who mixes in shop and the tins are unbranded.
@davemole1670
@davemole1670 6 ай бұрын
Great progress Dave. So the 2K paint is mixed with hardener and then brushed on un thinned is that correct Dave? I’ve got some paint which has been removed from a chassis rail on my Stag due to a power steering fluid leak and brush painting the rail would be a good option.
@DavesGarageuk
@DavesGarageuk 6 ай бұрын
@@davemole1670 it would definitely be better than leaving it, best to paint on 2k epoxy first then the 2k top coat. brushing it on works just fine, un-thinned. Hope this helps.
