I wanted to say thank you very much for the 4 videos for repairing the timing chain on a Ford 4.0. I've never done anything like this job but I was suddenly faced with a broken down vehicle that was going to cost a small fortune to get repaired. I was about ready to junk the Explorer when I came across your videos by God's providence. After watching all 4 several times I told my wife that I was going to take on the job of repairing it. After nearly 6 weeks the job was done and ready to install. I would have like to have seen a reinstallation video with all the torque specs and sequences but I wound up buying a Factory Service manual and slowly working my way through the reinstallation. Everything works perfectly though I did wind up having to replace the Idler Pulley, Water Pump, Steering Pump and several other parts along the way as well as chasing the threads on the plugs and rewiring the Throttle Position Sensor due to a mouse having set up it's home in my car while I was waiting to get all the parts in. I put all of it back together and it runs beautifully. Thank You for posting this and other videos which I will watch just to learn more. May the Lord Bless you and your work many times over. Oh, I bought the timing set off of Amazon and the first one I received was broken, got another one and when I finally got to the point of timing it I was past the return window. It sat 5mm to low to align with the Cam for timing. I used a shim to raise it to the right height and the timing came out perfect. I think I would have bought the more expensive tool had I known the problems I'd have with this one.

I have to thank you for all the knowledge you have shared. For without these tutorials and walkthroughs I would not have been able to replace the timing chains in my own ‘10 v6 explorer sport trac, by myself, without ever tackling a job as big as pulling an engine from anything else before. Even after going to my usual shop they said, “You’d be better off running it until it blows”. You saved me the loss of a long revered truck that’s always been around when I needed it. Through all 4 seasons, 260,000+miles strong! And sure to be many more, thank you very much for everything.

Great work, recommendation for beginners like myself are to show all the tools (shopping list) needed in the beginning (Sizes, types that make it easier), I ended up going to harbor freight a few times around $400 in tools I needed for this job, and around $400 in oil, shop supplies, parts. My timing parts exploded at 200k miles on a 06 Explorer 4.0 v6 4x4 Eddie Bower. I ended up doing this alone and took me about 5 days total having never done this type of work ever. First engine pull and first time doing a timing job. Thanks to you it’s back on the road good as new and saved some money. I used Amazon, Rock Auto, Harbor Freight, Walmart, Lowe’s Hardware for the timing parts/tools needed. Good Luck and patience is needed for this job.

I have a 2006 mustang I bought brand new from ford with this engine. Changed oil with mobile 1 every 2k miles like clock work and at 90k the rear chain was rattling like crazy. Could not believe it!!! This car was well taken care of with all fluids whether it needed it or not. I always thought changing fluids more was a cheap insurance policy to extend life on my car. My machanic said it was better to get a new engine from jasper then repair it. I did that and it cost me 6k for the job!!! He did beautiful work and it was done right but no engine should have to b replaced with less than a 100k miles on it period!! I still have the car and nothing else has gone bad and it runs great. What a learning curve. Shame on ford!! By the way I went to ford they heard the rattling and gave me the same price for a new motor or he wanted to sell me a new car

My 93 4.0 v6 just started ticking this year, (very faint on startup) ,after 4 years of letting it sit for weeks/ months between starts. Stopped tracking the miles in 2000 had over 250,000 on it then. Has to be a 500,000 now, odo days 59,000 so 559,000 miles. its 2wd and manual trans too. Kinda scared to get another truck even a Tacoma would be tough to outlive the ranger. (and kill my bank account) Many vehicles have come & past over the years with the intent ro replace it, but none outlive the ranger!. currently a dead CRV in the driveway, AND an 8th gen civic-- dead at 99,000 miles! probably just a starter, but STILL..... I own a 06 ford ranger 3.0 with 130,000 miles on it it runs perfectly zero issue but what should I look out for in the future as far as issues
@hanskinslo3265 жыл бұрын
The main thing you should worry about is the transmission, if it's an automatic. If it's never had fluid and filter changes on the transmission, YOU MAY OR MAY NOT want to change them now. It depends on how badly worn the transmission is. If you have a manual transmission, I wouldn't worry about anything until you have trouble shifting/clutch wears out. The 3.0 Vulcan is a very reliable engine, quite a bit different from the 4.0 SOHC
@Drew-wf7vw5 жыл бұрын
Only thing to look out for as far as critical failure is concerned is your cam synchronizer. If it fails it will take out the oil pump and kiss that engine goodbye.. They will make a pronounced chirping noise when they are on their way out.. Easy to replace and a cheap part.. As far as leaks go, the front timing cover has a coolant passage on the passenger side top, and it commonly it will blow out the timing cover seal.. Rear main seals like any engine will go with time, as water pumps.. But these parts are very cheap on these engines and easy enough for a DIY repair assuming you have a good set of tools.. On my second 3.0l Vulcan engine (sold my last one to buy a truck with a manual trans) last one held up to a ton of abuse and after replacing head gaskets/water pump/timing cover gasket it still ran like a top no issues with over 300,000km on the clock ended up selling it a year ago and the new owner has had it about a year with no further repairs needed (besides maintenance ie: oil changes) These engines make very little power and have crummy fuel consumption but they are cheap, reliable, and extremely loyal standing up to abuse

I have literally been waiting for a how-to video like this for years. It's been my experience that the late 2004 4.0 SOHC engines and up in the Ford Ranger don't have this problem, but if you buy a 2001-early 2004 Ranger with the 4.0 SOHC there's a 75% chance that the timing chain cassettes have disintegrated into the engine and you have some big problems.

Sure?
@jamesgoforth1606 Жыл бұрын
I know, right -- some people say that by the 2003 model year, the problems were known, and had been addressed -- greatly reducing the incidence of failure. Strange there's so much ambiguity on which years were problematic.

A good way to relieve fuel pressure to avoid spraying it everywhere is to pull the fuel relay and then turn the engine over a few times. You can drain the line from the fuel filter which is quick and easy or from where you are taking it apart.

Only problem I had after, I developed a leak at the front girdle seal. Unfortunately looks like I’ll be dropping the girdle and lower pan. Is it possible to change the girdle pan gasket in the ford Ranger or does the engine have to come back out? Maybe if I Jack the engine up of the motor mounts I’ll have enough clearance? Man that engine is a bear lol.

Since i can't discharge my ac at home, is it possible to keep ac lines hooked up and move stuff to the side to get the engine out?? Thanks!
@ShainAndrews6 жыл бұрын
I recommend keeping the hoist chain to the equalizer as short as possible. Noting worse than reaching the end of your ram and still can't clear the vehicle. I also keep all castors on jacks and hoists lubricated with motorcycle chain lubricant. You would be surprised how much that improves their operation and maneuverability.
@FordTechMakuloco6 жыл бұрын
Yup I agree, I have had a few engines max out and couldn't clear the vehicle to be removed. On this one though the chain is so thick that the cross bolt only fits on an end link not a middle link otherwise all of that slack would have been removed.
@ShainAndrews6 жыл бұрын
@@FordTechMakuloco Oh yeah, I remember having that very same issue. I think I swapped the bolt out with one that would fit between the links. Used a grade 8. Also remember getting the bolt through an alternate link was challenging to say the least. I did that early on, and never had a reason to lengthen it back out. I'd be tempted to cut the links off, but you know as soon as I do that I'll need the length for something.

Great video. I have an 2004 Ranger with this motor. Good too know what to expect down the road potentially. It is a torquey motor like you said and thirsty. I get 20mpg on the highway during the summer season, and around 16 or 17 on winter gas.

What a absolute mess under that Hood. The complexity of modern engines is Horrible. Brian your an Mega Ace mechanic and i see why so many mechanics retired. Especially with today's high tech junk. I'll keep my 1996. Buick Lesebre 3800. Easy car to work on.and a Bulletproof motor. Great video again.

Awesome video, thank you. I have to pull the engine on my 2002 Ranger with the 3.0 Not sure if you can attach the lifting eyes to it the same way you do here. I have the manual from Alldata but it doesn't show or tell you where to attach them. Any help would be appreciated. Love your videos and they have taught me a lot. Semper Fi Brother.

What is the chain kit you use?
@user-qb7qg2pp6w2 жыл бұрын
would a random misfire under heavy load and slight shaking at idle be an indication these chains may need replaced?

Something else you can do to help on re-installation is to take lots and lots of pictures as you disassemble. It makes life so much easier especially if it takes more and than a few days to fix and re-install.

Another quick tip for pulling any engine which has worked for me is loosening the rear trans mount bolts so the trans can scoot a bit back making it way easier to remove and install the engine to mate the 2 assemblies together. Dunno just the way I have done it. See if it works for u

Yup I always do that on the f-150 models but not all vehicles have a slotted transmission crossmember.

Great video, 2 questions? How many miles are on that engine? Also, how long typically does a timing chain last on the 3.0 vulcan? Love your videos!
@boobalew5 жыл бұрын
The Vulcan is a push rod engine. Shouldn't have to worry about the chain for a long time.

I don't see the need in these newer engines.

@@FordTechMakuloco it's a 2002, I thought it had rod knock at first, the way it was sounding like a knock, then totally went normal sounding, only chain rattle for a second on start up, VERY weird, so I'm doing the timing chain now, that's why I was asking about doing the rod bearings. I have 1 video under Kyle woodward of the motor running that your GREAT wisdom could look at if you see this..lol..might interest you. Maybe give your thoughts. Thanks for all your teaching!!!

Jose Garcia your Ranger should have the older OHV 4.0 (pushrod). Those run forever

@@chrisp7570 I miss the 4.0L OHV very much. It was discontinued after 2000 model year. The next similar one is 4.2L OHV, discontinued after 2008 model year in F-150 regular cab.

@@waltchan nothing between the 4.0 ohv and 4.2 ohv are shared except the number of cylinders and the thread pitch on the oil filters. 4.0 ohv is in the cologne family...4.2 ohv is the Essex family.

@@thefordmaniac A OHV is a OHV, no difference in quality. Both of them are pretty bulletproof.

@@waltchan ah I see what you meant. Yes. Agreed. Gm is able to produce pushrod engines that are pretty realiable their ohc offerings have the same quirks as ford's do. I have a 4.2 in my 98 f150. We have a 4.2 in our 03 f150 service truck. I've seen more issues from the ohc engines than any 4.0 ohv 3.0 3.8 4.2 4.9 5.0 5.8. It's a shame.

Core support is just spot-welded in...getting ready to swap my engine for a fresh before I supercharge it. Thinking the front clip is going to come off and reinstall the core support with welded nuts or nutserts. Easier access for future mods. Good video, didn't think it would be too difficult but every time I look at that cramped engine bay I have a small anxiety attack. lol

Is a "chain" better than the "belt" in terms of performance? I have worked with bicycles before, re-seating the chain on the sprocket, and even replacing it. But that seems to be a lot of work. Fun tinkering when equipment needed is available.

hey FordTechMakuloco, Do you feel like there should be a service interval for this timing chain set?

Yeah, whenever you start to hear noise. There will be warning signs well before a complete failure like this.
