In my experience, if you regularly tow more that 7000lbs, then upgrade to a 3/4+ ton truck. Most 1/2 tons don't have the payload capacity to handle the tongue weights and they aren't stable beyond that either. Towing is about more than just power.

Problem is the light weight truck and then the fulcrum of the heavy hitch weight 3.5ft aft of the rear axle(taking weight of the steer axle).I pull a 12k 40ft fifth wheel and it not an issue behind an F150. There is 500lbft available(at a useable 3000rpm) and I'm stable at speed.now it's not as stable as the F250 or 350 before it, but it does just fine. Its under the 4800lbs on the rear axle(HDPP) and I'm still under on the GVWR 7850lbs. Hell I'm under on the GCWR of 19100lbs combined too. A 250 would be safe on both axles, over on the GVWR(unless it was the 11k GVWR) and under on the GCWR. If you are over an either axle, the GVWR the risk of insurance NOT covering you is pretty high. Intentionally OVERLOADING a vehicle is grounds for policy cancelation. You should know better. You are the person that landed it and then drove it like that
@khakiswag2 күн бұрын
Engine power isn’t the only thing to consider when towing. Any HD truck will tow heavy loads with more stability than a 1500. Brakes, suspension and frame are all built better for heavy towing in a HD. If you’re towing more than 8,000 lbs on a regular basis get a HD gas or diesel.

Torque is the only force at play. HP is just torque at speed or torque over time. 1000lbft@1313rpm is 250hp 1000lbft@2626rpm is 500hp 1000lbft@3939rpm is 750hp 1000lbft@5252rpm is 1000hp All example are the same strength only difference is the RATE OF WORK being done. 400hp@2800rpm is 750lbft 400hp@5200rpm is 396lbft Same "power" way different capability. This is why a diesel stays in 10th and the gassers are screaming in 5th l. The powerstroke in the video make more than 1000lbft from 1400-2400rpm. At 1250rpm it's still making 390lbft more than the 3.5EB at 3000rpm. That's where the efficency and "ease" of towing come in. This is also why the 3.5 beats the other gas motors is performance, the 500lbft is available from 2800-3600rpm where the 6.2 makes 460lbft@4100.

This is a great vid! I’m so glad you did this comparison. I had an ‘07 5.9 years ago, I had a friend that worked at the local Toyota dealership. When the 5.7 Toyota tundra came out, he called me and wanted me to come drive one. He said that the new tundras had a faster 0-60 time with 7800lbs behind them than a stock Cummins. I kind of laughed and asked him what it’d do with 15k behind it and who’s running a stock Cummins… I’m not! LOL! I told him I’d be glad to line up with his new truck with 15k behind us, he declined… it’s hard to beat a diesel when it comes to towing and fuel economy. My family has had lots of and all kinds of diesels and gassers over the years. My dodge handled the weight waaaay better than the Chevy my dad had. I now have a ‘20 stroke, the first new ford truck in my family since 1986. It is by far the best towing truck I’ve ever owned. I’d like to hear your opinion on which trucks/frames handled the weight the best. Keep up the good work! Thanks for the great content for us gearheads.

I did a ton of RVing with gas 1/2 tons of they all did just "fine". My first diesel was a 2013 F350 DRW (17k lb 5th wheel) and the "white knuckle" factor (even towing my lighter RVs at 7k lbs) was a big revelation to me. The HD truck just makes the entire experience such a nothing burger. Heck, it make it downright enjoyable. Every time I'd approach a hill in the mountains on the 1/2 ton and it was screaming its way up the hill to maintain speed on the interstate my stress level would rise a bit. The HD trucks erase that completely for me. So for sure, worth it - the downsides of keeping after the maintenance on the modern diesels is so worth it for me...

The towing experience of a 3/4 ton is far superior then a 1/2 ton and if you get a gasser hd they’re really not much more money. I was towing my boat with a 2021 ram 1500 limited (air suspension) and 5.7 v8 and while I thought the truck did okay i was exceeding payload capacity as well as axle ratings. So I upgraded to a 2024 GMC 2500 Duramax and it remarkable how much better this truck pulls the same boat over the ram I had. Of course the power and fuel economy is better with the Duramax but to me the stability and the control of the hd is far superior. 70 mph in the ram towing the boat; the tail was wagging the dog and you could always feel that weight pushing the truck around. the hd is so much more comfortable and drives straight as an arrow on the highway it’s truly like it’s not there. Remarkable difference in the comfort and control towing with an hd.

My problem with the conclusion here is that, if you start yanking a 8000-10000 lb cargo trailer around the Rockies in the summer with a 1/2 ton, you are probably going to run into cooling issues. When it’s 90+ degrees, and you are at 7000’, the half ton is going to struggle. I had a max tow F150 Ecoboost and towed a 5500 lb travel trailer 24000 miles in UT, WY, ID, NV and MT. It would pull like an ox but the coolant temps would very easily get up into the 230’s and 240’s unless I backed out. I had it hit 250F twice and go into limp mode to protect itself The cooling systems on the 3/4+ ton trucks is just soooo much more substantial.

what’s interesting is our 2021 tundra 5.7 has better power and brakes than my old 97 7.3 f250, and pulls weight up hills better than it, but when you put an enclosed trailer with a truck inside it the 7.3, despite being slower off the line and a little harder to stop, is incredibly more stable. no “white knuckle” experiences, as you’ve described it. whereas pulling a load on a windy highway entering road construction in the tundra is pretty scary, the old f250 just eats it up. wheelbase, frame rigidity, rear spring rate make a huge difference

If you tow a ton with more than 12k get the HD. It’s 10k more for the diesel, diesel fuel costs more, more maintenance, more problems. When all the additional costs are taken into account you are talking about lot of towing and years to offset the fuel savings.

I have always heard that the power is cut back on the single rear wheel F-250 diesel trucks in first and second gears
@TheGettyAdventures2 күн бұрын
could be true. but these 6.7 powerstrokes are fast as hell in these 2500s
@ryanhaasch1708Күн бұрын
The 6.7 would have accelerated quicker if it wasn’t in tow haul I seems to hold the gears a little long with light load even though tow haul should be used for towing.
@patrickthomas8736Күн бұрын
My question is with the truck prices so high, why not use a baseline super duty with the 6.8 liter gasser?? I think that would be a better comparison.
@rustydusty11112 күн бұрын
Gas engines are definitely not reliable either. They seem to be all suffering from rocker/lifter failures from all the cylinder deactivation BS. I ended up going with a low KM duramax LBZ as the new diesels have emissions issues and the new gas engines are having top end issues.
@J.Young808Күн бұрын
If the truck you are buying is for everyday and sometimes towing buying a diesel is bad idea as short trips are bad for diesels.

I get 9mpgs towing with my 2024 Ram 6.4 Hemi 🤷♂️

Well you already knew diesel burns slower than regular gas... There's a reason big rigs and tugboats along with tractors and bulldozers use diesel. All round better for towing/pulling/pushing But most regular truck guys don't need a diesel truck.

With 1500 truck I would probably pull a generator or air compressor a small landscaping trailer nothing more

If you think you don't like turbo leg try driving a diesel without a turbo at all and see what you get
@stevenk8052 күн бұрын
It may seem “easy” towing up a grade at 1400rpm, but the engine is cooking itself. I’m guessing the EGTs and engine de-rating were what caused the downshift, not the lack of power. Being “easy” on a diesel is giving it some rpm for lower EGTs and proper coolant flow
@ALMX5DP2 күн бұрын
I feel that is such an underrated and underreported perspective. I too think that these modern diesels are so damn refined and torquey that they sometimes can be hurting themselves like you mentioned. Downshift a couple of gears to get the rpm up seems to help keep EGTs in check much better but hardly anyone talks about that.

If you are not towing 10,000 lbs 3X times a week, then the answer is no, you do not need a HD.
@aidanscull57702 күн бұрын
Yea but you can always delete and tune a diesel and then it’s 3 times as fast
@ALMX5DP2 күн бұрын
If I had a modern diesel I’d never tune it for more power/torque. In fact I may delete it and derate it to whatever the commercial spec is to try and make it last as long as it could while still having gobs of torque in its own right.

I mean if you don't care about warranty, but they are getting tighter and tighter in most places on deleted trucks.

Tell me something….. are you doing it on purpose when you get the low and high gearing wrong? 3.55 is LOWER than 3.31. I get it the correction comments probably help the channel.
@ALMX5DPКүн бұрын
I think it’s fine as long as it’s stipulated to refer to it as being numerically higher for a lower (speed) ratio.

I dont agree with all the new half tons tow ratings sure can get weight moving but how safe can you stop it in an emergency situation id say anything over 8000 pounds be safer with a 3/4 ton
@ALMX5DP2 күн бұрын
SAE J2807 has braking and handling thresholds just like it does for acceleration and engine related metrics like cooling performance.
@rexchris52832 күн бұрын
Braking is your worry in this situation? I get that, but my brake rotors and pads in my 1500 are almost the same size as my father in laws 3500.
@TheGettyAdventures2 күн бұрын
I agree the ratings are getting a little wild but they are all tested under the same umbrella I believe. either way a 3/4 will handle a trailer much better

Lbz vs 7.3 Godzilla, the real question. Wondered if I could put a different oil pump in the Godzilla if I got one. I’d take a power stroke if I could drop the emissions stuff
@andrewevans15192 күн бұрын
@@rexchris5283 I tow with a ram 1500 and a ram 2500 and I know that I’ve had to replace pads and rotors on my ram 1500 and my 2500 doesn’t even have much wear

Would love to see your towing loop with a 4th Gen Ram 1500 Hemi. I know it's a bit older but still viable for a lot of people. Thanks

You did your acceleration run in 4WD but I read somewhere Ford limits power in the lower gears in 4WD because the either the transfer case or the front differential can’t handle the torque.

The Ford 10 speed transmission is bad news. The truck has power but the transmission is the achilles heal. Brand new 2024 ambulance left me and my crewmember on the side of the road, truck has been down for over a month. Giving a whole new meaning to Ford Tough!

I thought the E-series cutaways and ambulances still had the 6-speed? Or is it an F-450 type ambulance?
