Changed these pipes today on my wife's focus,absolute nightmare getting it off,easy to put on,no room to get at anything,I used a very long flat head screw driver and a rubber mallet to break through the old pipe,the nut was easy to get out then with an 18 ratchet,good tip to not put the nut on first,and after all that the steering still gets heavy when the car is at idle!!! Thanks for the video great tips, it was a big help.

Mine blew other week! Regarding the union nut the correct procedure is to use an 18mm flared nut wrench and insert the pipe into the nut. When the nut is then tightened down using the wrench it clamps down in the pipe creating the seal needed. I'm sure both methods work, but correct way requires different tool.

@sandyanderson, thanks for this video. Just changed the pipes on my Focus after watching this. I think that I probably would have out the union on the pipe first, if I hadn't watched this. Just to confirm to those that have asked. Fit the union nut first & tighten, the pipe then push fits in. You should feel it lock in place.

Any advice from anyone doing this: Firstly don't buy the aftermarket pipe. They don't match up to the framework of the car and don't fit in properly into the union bolt. Secondly, get the car jacked up, you'll need to work from the bottom of the car. Also take off the front left light and the power steering reservoir, it will give you loads of space you need. To separate the pipe from the union bolt I just used my jack handle(about 2 ft solid pipe) and hammer to tap it off. It tears off the bolt and then you can just use an 18mm socket to unscrew the bolt. I would say it'scan achievable Infront of the house job but don't go for a cheap replacement.

Hi Sandy, thanks for an excellent video. Could you use a second hand hoses but just a new pump fitting to save money? I'm guessing it's just the seal that needs replacing?
@Vanadeo2 жыл бұрын
The 18mm bolt on the pump... Do you tighten it before you put the pipe in or leave it loose and tighten after?.. Im guessing the bracket holds the pipe in place?
@stevekeen2 жыл бұрын
Just another update from a previous post concerning this job, I have done another replacement hose recently it appears it's a common fault where a leak occurs in the high pressure metal pipe that fits to the steering pump. In both cases a fracture occurs at this pipe where the metal support bracket is welded to the pipe. I have learnt a few thinks since doing two of these hose fittings which I am sure will make fitting the hose easier if doing this job for a first time , in particular push fitting the high pressure pipe into the new nut, this nut must be replaced when fitting a new hose, (ford parts supplier), the new nut should comes with the new hose kit from ford. A mistake I made twice was to fit and attach the hose at all its mount points first and then try to push fit the high pressure line and was unable to get it to lock in place, you may be tempted to undo the nut as I did the first time a few turns then and you will find the hose locks in place but you will find it very very difficult to fully tightened the nut up, I did this by using a small chisel to tap up the nut tight (not recommended). So my advice for everyone doing this job is to fit the hose in its location but NOT to screw it down at its mountain points, this will enable you to push the hose into place much easier because there is no longer any resistance caused by the rest of the hoses and pipe and preventing you from having full movement of pipe and preventing it from locking into place , once locked in place next fit its mounting bracket to the pump, once done finish and attach all other fixings - hope this helps everyone.

It will click into place, and won't pull back out. I just spent all day trying to get my pipe into the union, but eventually took it apart again to discover the copper locking washer was all mangled, which was why it wouldn't push in. Took the copper washer out of the union, straightened it up, put it back in and it clicked into place very easy. Stupid design!
