I put a new used trans with half the mileage in my ST a month ago because my 3rd and 4th synchros went bad. 9 days after the warranty expired on this "new" one ended I lost 4th gear... And i haven't been beating it. Hopefully I can rebuild it without messing it up.

This video fully encapsulates working on a car with the boys. 4 of you in the garage, one owns the car, one is the knowledge and tools guy, and the other two are there to fuck around/play mess around with their gun/talk crap to the two working on the car.

My Ford Focus jumps out of reverse, i.e. the shifter jumps out of reverse position as well as the transmission disengages of reverse. All it takes is to stick it in reverse, drive a few feet in reverse and you get this "thump" sound and the stick and the transmission jump out of reverse, sometimes Iget grinding sound sometimes the grinding sound is not there itjust jumps out of reverse. Any thoughts, directions as to what might be the cause?

You think this is a doable job for someone who works in a shop turning wrenches? I've replaced clutch assemblies before just never split a transaxle before? I'm aware of the precise measurements and preload needed when re assembling and am one to pay attention to detail and triple check things. Need to replace a clutch and figured I could do it all at once lsd, clutch, and some fresh synchros

Why doesn't anyone set preload on the new bearings? They do it with the diff bearings when putting a lsd in but not upgrading sychros??
@boost3513 жыл бұрын
Maybe because people aren't aware of it. I think there's a special tool to mount the dial indicator, to set up the bearing preload. I haven't come across anyone doing it when replacing bearing on the shafts

So, what is the advantage of the carbon lining in the new syncros?
@drzflyest4 Жыл бұрын
The grip is superior to a brass lining making high rpm shifts buttery smooth
@HouseLightweight5 жыл бұрын
so I'm guessing the new synchros are stronger than the factory one's?

If you don't mind sending me those forks, I'll make a replacement part for those plastics in CAD, I have a special high heat bearing plastic that would be perfect for that. I'll pay shipping also, just lmk.

samsonyunited sorry for late reply, i found some one to sell it to me used, but you can buy it new off of jacks transmission.
@samsonyunited5 жыл бұрын
@@SlowestRS so I take IT you did not shimm and you used the same bearing race and only changed the bearing on the shaft?
@SlowestRS5 жыл бұрын
samsonyunited i did change the outer race that stays on the housing of the transmission. I had a shop take it off and put the new one in
@boost3513 жыл бұрын
@@samsonyunited I think you need a special tool to mount the dial indicator to set bearing preload (shims)

How did this all work out in the end? I did this exact process and I'm also wondering if it's these upgraded top counter shaft bearings. Did an OEM clutch, DMF, slave cylinder, and syncro upgrade. Also disassembled the shift tower because I had a leak, cleaned thoroughly resealed and installed. The first issue I stumbled across was bleeding the slave cylinder. I have a decent Craftsman bleeder tool but it's not a high-end shop tool. After pumping for a while it finally gravity bled as we couldn't seem to inject too much fluid into the slave cylinder through this particular bleeder tool. Gave it about 100 pumps. The car starts fine and I've got the proper dot 4 pissing out of the slave cylinder. Clutch pedal returns after being depressed. No check engine light. My problem seems to be with the engagement. I have reverse... And if I start in second on the lift, I have wheel rotation. Feels like I'm putting it into first although the feel doesn't seem quite right and nothing. As I go to bring it to the neutral position the wheels start to spin. It looks and appears to be a neutral although there is a slight resistance and the car doesn't want to turn off. After tapping the button four or five times the car finally turns off. With the vehicle off the transmission seems to cycle through all the gears just fine but with a slight resistance. No clunking or banging just feels a little weird. Maybe it's because I've been driving a 2014 6sp Corolla for the past week LOL. Did the shift linkage reset whereas the vehicle was put in a neutral, the clip was released, put into fourth and then clip reattached. Same results. I know there's a few possibilities as this is like calling your doctor and telling him you have a cough and asking for a diagnosis over the phone. But any insight would be appreciated. Gonna give it a go again tomorrow. Worst case scenario pull the transmission and reinspect everything. Pulled the shift tower before I left and everything looked great... Kinda stumped. I am also used Ford OEM spec dual clutch transmission fluid. There's nothing crazy or aftermarket other than the synchros. Shift forks slid up and down on both counter shafts before reinstallation and The shift works lined up properly accepting the shift tower when sealed and installed.
