Ford PCM / ECM VIN reflash when original control is not available or not working.
Follow the steps in this video to help rewrite the vin in the replacement controller.
We do offer new and used module reprogramming on selected Ford Engine Controller off car. Please see the bottom of the description for more info.
The controller being reprogrammed in this video is the for EEC-V PCM. Computer info can be found on the white tag affixed to the header connector. In the top left you will find the computer type. EX EEC-IV, EEC-V, EEC-VI ect.

If you’re using a bench tester like the TomSad Smart Connect they recently came out with a ignition coil attachment that you could use for programming your keys in as long as the key data is saved in the module you’re working on.

Eric, I am trying to figure out if I should replace my pcm in a 1999 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L. My vehicle randomly shuts off when running, and when it does this, the Odometer reads '-------' and the numbers are not displayed on the odometer when it shuts off. If I switch the ignition off at the key and restart, it restarts fine, until the '------' returns on the odometer. What does that typically mean? I was thinking that since it is random and that the odometer is good, that it may mean that the pcm is bad, assuming all the wiring in the harness is good. Previously, I had the instrument panel serviced to repair a problem where the fluorescent digital display odometer was intermittently blanking out to black due to a bad solder joint which is a known problem for Ford Expeditions and F-150s that have this type of display. I took the Expedition to the Ford Dealership where they detected a TPS code and replaced the Autozone TPS that was replaced a few years ago, to a Motorcraft TPS. About a week later the Expedition shut down at 45 mph when I was driving it on a 2 lane road. Also, I want to know if the TPS % reading on a scanner should range from 19.2% to 95% normally with a good TPS and a good PCM? I ask this, because I thought it was supposed to be more like 5% to 98% or something like that. I have read on the Internet that the PCM Relay might be bad, and cheap to replace, maybe $15. But, that doesn't explain why the Expedition starts up immediately and runs fine until it shuts down randomly, again while driving, at various speeds. I have seen pcm used on eBay.com for $25 to $35 to $55 on up for used Expedition computers. I have seen programmed pcm units from Flagship One for only $177 that have been refurbished and are warranted for a lifetime. I have seen OEM pcm units for $500 and above. What would you do if you were trying to repair this intermittent problem on a 1999 Ford Expedition in 2023? It is a 24 year old car at this point, and although I would like to have it run right, I do not know what is the most economical, yet reliable. Duane Wong Somerset, PA

So, I have a VIN but I have a VIN I want to mimic. The VIN I want to mimic is the one that has an option I want, I just don't want to have this PCM think that the VIN is of the vehicle I want to mimic Is this what I would do? enter my PN on my sticker not have it on basically fool it into thinking it burned out completely then after plug it in? Or do I tell it the VIN of the one I want and it download everything from Ford?

Hey, Original PCM on my 2004 Ford got shorted out and replaced by a shop with a used PCM. Discovered at emissions testing that shop did not reflash the PCM and still has old VIN. I suspect that this replacement PCM is not calibrated properly for my car since it is running rich. Contacted shop that claims no, PCM will go back to factory settings even if prior owner of PCM changed settings in PCM and old VIN won’t make a difference. I’ve asked them to check the PCM settings on my car and reset to factory settings if necessary. They said that that can’t be done via the OBD2 port and the PCM needs to come off the car to do that. I’ll press them to do that if necessary, but is that true? Is this procedure not through the ODB2. Any tips or advise welcomed. I paid way too much for them to just blow off reflashing the PCM if they should have done that. Thank you.

Reflash can be done in the car or off. Sounds like they threw it in and programmed two keys to it via a handheld scan tool. If they did reflash it then the procedure for vin replacement was not correct. Would need to follow key procedures discussed in this video to manually input the vin for the rewrite.

They could only disabled PATS. With PATS disabled you could plug the PCM in any car.

Hey question, what are the pinouts on the ford pcms that are required in order to read them on a bench? I know it’s power, ground, can h, can l, 120ohm resistor. J2534 device? I use drew tech mainly as for software IDS or FJDS when using drew tech. I clone lots of ford pcms now vs flashing them with a subscription when I can. Anything late model especially to avoid the pats reset with nastf. I use for scan a lot for transit vans when doing abs and other odd things. Software works great for weird odds and ends.

I have a question...... 07 f150 I have only 1 key before I start programming I need 2 working keys I understand that. In the pats section can I program the 2 new keys with 1 original to make a total of 3 keys before I switch pcm????

Not sure I understand what you are asking. When you enter Pats All keys will be erased. So You must have Two keys in order to program the keys correctly to start the vehicle. Only one key would be required in order to access the pats function.

Hey ive been flashing pcms for a while now but sometimes when i flash used pcms on fords older than 2004 it seems to freeze the screen and lose communication to the pcm?? has this happened to you before and if yes what exactly is the issue thats causing the diagnostic tool to freeze and not program the module? could it be a bad pcm?

I have never had that issue. The only Ford PCM I have ever bricked was when I shop pulled a relay in the fusebox in the middle of my flash.

Hi question, i have a 2004 Focus svt, that the oem ecu has Zero communication so car would just crank. No fuel or spark at all. After changing almost every possible part, I decided And found a 03 Focus svt ecu And came with the key too. After installing the replacement ecu car started right up, yeah! My main issue is that my 04 svt came with a supercharger And a Ford SCT X3 scanner that now say Vehicle not recognized. Of course is because the sct is married to the oem ecu. I need somehow to transfer the Vin to the replacement ecu. I've called SCT and they told me sorry your sct scanner is too old for us to unlock. Any suggestions??

Wondering if you could help me out... I had a tuner install a tune on my 2003 excursion 6.0 diesel. It works, however, the tuner changed my vin and locked me out of my sct x3. I have a vcm and ids, can i sace the tune file, revert to my vin, and install the tune on my sct x3?

You can rewrite the orig file with the ids but puling the tune off with ids is not going to happen. HP tuners or SCT would be needed to read the mod tune. Dont mess with aftermarket tuning with fords so I have no answers on this one.

Hey just a question. Not sure how much experience you have with ford pcm reflashing. I have a 2011 mustang, with the tear tag of xfn3. I purchased a ecm with the wrong tear tag of zfk1. Both cars have 5.0 both manual trans. Only difference is the new one was from a 2012. Is it possible to program to my vin. Or do I need the vin for that vehicle? I tried to program it but as soon as I did it would tell me the ecm was unknown/ wrong. And that I needed a certain part number. Any help is appreciated

From my experience, you almost always have to have like for like part numbers when flashing fords. Fords can be a real pain to flash sometimes due to part compatibility. Good luck.

Great video. I have a question. My 2015 f350 6.2 pcm went bad. Ordered one that was programmed to my vin. After installation the truck runs terrible and won’t idle right and eventually throws the wrench icon and goes into limp mode. Even though it shows the vin on remanufactured pcm is correct is it possible it still wasn’t programmed right? Tia

To my knowledge you wont find anyway to disable vats with ford or oem level diag tools. HP SCT ect would be required for a pats disable.

What if the pcm part numbers aren’t exactly the same. I have a used one trying to do on a 2008 focus the tear tags aren’t exactly the same. Just replaced the pcm on my 98 Ranger. Everything was fine....until it got warm, then it wouldn't start. Had to replace old one. Does it need to be programmed? I just swapped it out. Is that the problem?

IF the VIN was in the original, nothing I ever had could read it....had to manually input the VIN into the AutoTap program I had. Got another one, and it worked for about a week, then wouldn't start when cold. Connected a reader to it...said it had no codes...and then it started!?!?

You will need two keys no way around it. I would blankpath ecm do a perimeter reset and program in two new keys.

Not sure if im understanding. A rebuild would not need to be re flashed. A re builder should not have to re flash unless some programming specific parts had to be replaced. PATS may have to be relearned but that about it.

Tried this on 2 separate yet identical PCMs... At the point it should start programming i get an error "The current session does not match this vehicle... Please start a new session" Unfortunately, I cant find a way around it. using legit NEW VCMii and registered legit FJDS with the newest 2019 update. Any suggestions?

7/8/22. RARE SITUATION ??? Been to two emissions testing families, two dealerships, and spoken with six different technician and mechanics and not one has ever even heard of my present situation in which a car won't pass smog because the first digit (country code, 5) showed up as a special character on my ecu. Mechanics tell me the problem cannot be fixed with a refresh because the Vin is programed and the country code shouldn't matter bc it is a standard prefix which all auto in the U.S. have anyway, technicians say to refresh the unit and the smog station says I have to go to Oregon DMV/ODOT because the Vin is not even in the system even though the registration notice came from them. This is a clusterF of seemingly random non-answers. What the heck am I supposed to do, throw away a perfectly functioning vehicle simply bc the ecu doesn't verify the fact the 2005 Toyota Sienna was OBVIOUSLY manufactured in the U.S.? Please, please HELP!!!

@@SpartanAutoworx Thank you for that. From what I have found, not all scan tools have a read/write utility to enter the eeprom. Toyota dealership wants $200 just to try with no guarantee it will work. Literally zero people that have heard of ECU VIN mismatches (Southern OR) have not heard anything of this kind of partial mismatch and no one can say why it happens. Thank you for your reply! 👍🙂

Used If programming is found in IDS use as built from the server to flash it. If it ask then copy data from the old module. Never done ABS on a Push or Repair daily
