@Emily Li Everybody is racist to each other and that doesn’t excuse it, but it’s reality. Tons of Chinese people in mainland China are racist to foreigners. The same thing applies in America to Asian Americans. That doesn’t take away from foreigners wearing Chinese dresses or means cultural appropriation isn’t bullshit. Hell, if they’re wearing a Chinese dress or clothing, it usually means they would be the ones NOT being racist and appreciating Chinese culture. Your logic has so many holes in it, it blows my mind that you can’t reason these basic concepts to yourself.

Nobody is right in this situation. First, those 网友 should never so overreact like that, but the way Chinese culture be miss understand was truly a big problem, it is just not that lady's fault. So this is another complicated issue that happened all the time, and it is no way to really solve it. If anyone who tries to defend their stand here will get the things out of control because this is not a real issue, is just an image of normalcy. The way Winston has much hate from China is because he does not have the Chinese ideology and even play against it. Although he makes many videos talking about something like 'face' and 'avoid conversation' things, but there are reasons for it. Chinese have those cultural for thousand's years and Winston did not have a deep discussion about it. Don't try to shape the society because the society shapes you initially, unless you are a saint.

All this weird moral policing irritates the fuck out of me. If someone doesn’t want to wear foreign clothing out of fear of offending someone, fine, I don’t care. But don’t force people to follow along. That’s where you lose me. Social awareness is generally a good thing, but their sadistic fetish of smearing anyone who thinks slightly differently about damn near anything almost makes me ashamed to call myself a liberal. Last I checked "culture appropriation" is just diversity and peoples tastes spreading worldwide. So yes cultural appreciation :) I don't think anybody cares if people outside of America wear t-shirts for example. An American invention; otherwise would be considered cultural appropriation by the standard set by people claiming Americans wearing Chinese dresses is appropriating culture. What about all those college kids dressing in togas? That must be cultural appropriation! Without appropriation we'd be slowing our development down as a human race. The real racists are the ones claiming cultural appropriation; sounds like segregation to me.

I agree with you. From my opinion, usually people screaming and shouting cultural appropriation are those (usually in American) that don't understand their own culture or the culture they think other people is appropriating it. They have low conference or self-esteem as if a foreigner is more cultural that him/her on his/her own culture, it reflect their ignorant and loose face. That is totally opposite in my case. As someone who is working on hanfu/汉服 revival activity, we understand that qipao is not our (han or 汉族)traditional clothing and try to avoid it and only wear hanfu, because wearing qipao ourself is also kinda like appropriation of Manchurian (满族)culture. Too bad, foreigner don't wear hanfu and thought that it is something from cosplay, else we would praise them instead of bashing them.

That is how people improve their lives. I suspect that Jeremy Lam (the guy that famously ranted about the Utah girl) is an angry Marxist sociology major that is bitter about not being able to find a job in his field after racking up $80k in student loan debt. His rants do remind me of the Marxist nuts in college that few people took seriously back then.

In fiction writing class a girl told me I had no write from a woman's pov because I wasn't a woman, that I was engaged in both gender and cultural appropriation. I laughed because I thought she was joking. As a result, she tried to have be written up for "microaggressing" her. That was the first time I'd heard of microaggression and safe-spaces. This was on a college campus in the United States. We were legally adults.
@mike4ty46 жыл бұрын
But if you make it all written from male POVs, then aren't you just contributing to the overrepresentation of male POVs in the culture and the prevalence of male POV-written works? Or worse, if you have to write from a "male pov" what exactly does that mean? Does that mean a stereotypical patriarch male pov where you have to depict the women as sex objects or through a "male gaze" as it's often called? Isn't that then something which will promote discriminating messages in the culture? And to even write a female character at all, don't you kind of have to write at least a _bit_ from their "pov"? At least if you want them to be a realistic, _human_ character and not just a caircature? And isn't that what you need if you want to _not_ have "sexism"? And if you don't write any female characters at all, wouldn't you call that work ... "sexist"? See, the problem is that these doctrines, when taken to extreme all-or-nothing ends, end up becoming logically contradictory to each other and jointly unsatisfiable, and there's never been a good explanatory piece arguing how exactly this is supposed to be reconciled. In _moderate_ forms, they may have valid points, but when taken to extreme they become _logically contradictory_ meaning that an absurdity occurs from which follows everything and anything including a HEADPOP
@mike4ty46 жыл бұрын
@神州 Shenzhou Well I believe though that in a relationship _neither_ should "dominate". It should be about the two as _equals_ and companions. Where does that put me in terms of ideology, anyways?
@toddboothbee13616 жыл бұрын
mike4ty4 I agree. My view of art, such as literary writing, is that it isn't the servant to political fashions. That's an ideal vision, of course. Another ideal I have is that I am a writer, not a penis, and I refuse to restrict my writing to someone else's prejudices, no matter how fashionably justified it is to a narrow few in this current, transient cultural moment. I do sometimes write from a female character's pov and I find this possible and successful because I begin with a human being, not a vagina. I've known women all my life: they've raised me, loved me, mentored me, some have hated me and have been my enemies. Hmmm...in these and many other ways they are like men, that is, they are human. Some are stupid, some are geniuses. Some are thoughtless bigots, others have a deep sense of humanity and its flaws and powers. Writing, at least for this writer, is less about shoving my pet answers about life into peoples heads as much as it is exploratory thought. Freedom is required for this. That freedom begins at the individual level, for example, when you decide to be deeply honest about what you feel and what you know, and to work from there, and sometimes to be willing to tell even the best intentioned and most aggrieved to screw off.

It is a situational thing. For example, non-Native Americans wearing sacred and ceremonial headdresses at Coachella is blatantly cultural appropriation. Furthermore, simply because you surveyed 6-8 people on a random street in China does not support your argument that cultural appropriation is just a thing “for entitled college students”.

I like that the people you asked did not seem to pick up on the 'foreign' aspect at all. The deciding factor seemed to be whether the individual would have the figure to pull it off. Ethnicity didn't even seem come up in their minds as a factor.

Exactly what Chinese people really are like
@illiminatieoverlordgurglek1406 жыл бұрын
I'd say most people outside the US are like that. I've noticed it's mostly Americans who seem to be hyper focussed on ethnicity. I'm 99% sure that if you asked a Dutchman or a German this same question about traditional dress they would not understand that ethnicity might be a factor either. By the way I think you're absolutely right about others wanting to wear your 'cultural/historical dress' being a compliment. If suddenly traditional Dutch dress would become popular in China and they'd all start walking around in it, I would just be amused by that, and maybe even flattered. But not in a million years would I feel they were 'stealing my culture'. It's such a strange concept when you think about it.

there is no such thing as "cultural appropriation" because the sharing of cultures is beautiful, people need to get over themselves already
@PixieElixir5 жыл бұрын
Chris Rackley I think there is such a thing if a culture is misinterpreted and maliciously used.
@StochasticUniverse4 жыл бұрын
@@PixieElixir But in practice, that's almost a logical impossibility, since any act of practicing a culture is just helping it spread. As long as you're accurately portraying it, there's no such thing as bad publicity because any act of invoking the culture, whether it be by practicing it or even just stating facts about it, is helping knowledge of it spread. The only way to "commit a crime against culture", which is basically what you're talking about, is to mischaracterize that culture with libels and slander. So, for example, if you said that jihad is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, that would be a misinterpretation that asserts something that is factually wrong about that culture. But simply wearing a hijab would not, in itself, represent a malicious or distorting act towards the culture (and in fact, a woman would be required to do so if she were going to enter a mosque -- it would not be optional). Since the woman in this video didn't do anything to misrepresent Chinese culture, she's cleared of all thought crimes. =P May the Inquisition grind onward!

Real cultural appropriation is a dominate culture selling a bastardized version of a minority culture. It is a real problem and extremely damaging to minorities. Being infatuated with another culture and buying clothing from said culture is not appropriation as long as it is worn within context. Some cultures are considered closed to outsiders and were never traditionally shared with outsides unless welcomed in through marriage or adoption-- my bf is from a culture like this-- and even then I cannot take apart in the tattoo rituals of his culture because it is closed to people who have that ethnic blood only. The vast majority of cultures are not like this at all. Chinese, japanese, middle eastern, and most western cultures are considered open for anyone to practice.

Plus the whiner had a white name. Cultural appropriation!!!
@mike4ty46 жыл бұрын
@Reed Lenhart Well I think though there is some truth to that the minority culture does get looked down upon and there's a definite hypocritical trend in how that some things are treated when they come from a "White" guy/gal/etc. vs. the same thing coming from a "Black" guy/gal/etc. . But the answer isn't cultural segregation, the answer is for those who do such hypocrisy to purge the prejudice from their minds, and for us in general to purge prejudice from our culture overall. Like I can understand why a Black person might get upset about some White guy wearing dreads if they've been accused all their life of being "ghetto" etc. when they go to wear them but that White guy doesn't and gets called "cool". But the answer then is to _quit calling Black people ghetto for wearing dreads_ , not enforce some kind of culturally based Jim Crow system that will ironically enough just repeat all the very same atrocities that the original one built on far more nefarious motives did.

I’m a college student near LA and this is a huge problem in America right now. There are tons of these rich, entitled kids getting extremely offended on behalf of people who honestly couldn’t care less. It’s all to make themselves feel virtuous and create this faulted sense of individually in a society where being a minority isn’t special anymore. (Most densely populated areas in the US are pretty diverse) The most ironic thing is that most of the Chinese kids that are offended by this are more American than Chinese! If anything they’re claiming a culture they barely even take part in, let alone live in it like the people in the video! This happens all of the time across all ethnic groups in the US and the militantness to enforce this “correct” way of thinking is a little too “Red-Guard” like for my comfort.... Anyways, great video man. Hope it goes viral. Stay awesome!

Z Lin oh yes finally, I've been scrolling for this comment a long time!!! I was shocked about the fact that everyone including most Chinese in this KZbin video only notice qipao and didn't even knew what was hanfu. I personally thought hanfu is much more beautiful and traditional than qipao since it has an longer history. It is the true "traditional" Han Chinese's clothing, qipao was popular through the republic of china era (1912-1949) so it was not long ago and quite modern compare to hanfu with thousand years of histories.
@ganikus85655 жыл бұрын
@@wen.z533 True, the Qi Pao is the clothe of the Qi ren, ennemies of Chinese that we call Manchu. When the Manchu took controle of China, only them could wear their Qi pao; while Chinese were not allowed to. Moreover the actual Qi pao was created in Shanghai in the 30's by a French man and a Chinese lady, using European fashion on that time to change the traditional Qi pao. Nothing much Chinese then
@newname37184 жыл бұрын
To me a qipao isn't near traditional. Anyways, I won't be bothered if Westerners or anyone wears it. As long as they wear it nicely like a normal piece of clothing without any bad intentions or hidden meaning I'm fine. If they indeed have bad intentions it's the intentions that irritates me not the wearing part.

Why do you NOT address the underlying issue as to why the young lady chose the dress she did. For years, girls in Utah, some Mormon and some not, have been clamering for tasteful and modest prom dresses that cover the shoulders and back. And when prom dresses come out in the stores, none meet those standards. The girl selected the qipau as it was tasteful and modest. Personally, I think that they look very beautiful for women with a good figure and very luxurious.
