I built a similar project when I lived in Oklahoma in 1977, before we had computers, much less KZbin, but I built a board and board rather than a board and batten - (210 feet long). That way, it looked the same from both sides - what I call a good neighbor fence - and it allowed the wind to blow through. Back then I hand sanded each redwood board and sanded off my fingerprints doing it. This was before I even heard of gloves, power nailers, electric screwdrivers, and pocket holes. I grade you 100% on this one, and I saved a link for posterity, just like I saved all those home improvement books from the '70's.

Thanks for mastering and thoroughly explaining your methods for a built-to-last fence! People who call it over-built no longer appreciate the problem solving, calculation, and diligence required in durable, well-measured carpentry.

I can do about anything with wood, carve, cabinets, and carpentry. I say you did an excellent job building a beautiful and durable fence. Can't think of anything that would have made it better. I also appreciate you explanation it was simple but at yhe same time in detail. Anyone wanting to build a fence that does not know how should not have any issues following the directions you gave. I'll give you 5 stars on the fence, 5 stars on the directions, and I'll give you 5 stars on the video. I enjoyed watching this video..

I'm a fellow Texan. I believe that you built your fence better than any wooden picket fences I've seen. I simply love how you did it, from start to finish. I want to suggest that you use a string to help keep the nails in a straight line, instead of using a chalk line. You nailed them in a straight line anyway. I don't think anyone will ever notice that. Thanks for sharing the videos you make! Very insightful and educational. I've enjoyed watching them! 😊

I've been a carpenter for over 35 years. And in that time I've never seen anything as over done as this fence. I found myself amazed of how much thought you put into so many aspects of building a fence. That truly didn't need to be. And to be quite frank with all the nights you must have lost sleep over figuring all this out. I think you missed the more logical way of doing things. I don't mean any of this as an insult because I think your fence speaks for itself. And I think you did a great job. That will even impress your great grand children when they are trying to " maybe make repairs" Anyway great job.

Amazing job and there's lots of stuff I would have never bothered doing. Even though I've never built a fence myself. BUT. I've patched plenty of old, falling down fences, and one thing maybe you could have done is something I swore I'd do if I built one - put some fall on the top surface of each of your runners / rails (and your very top board) so the water runs off them. When I patch up fences I often have to do what you showed in your first video in this series - nail a whole new board over the top of the palings because the rail underneath is too rotten to nail or screw into in places. I've looked at these fences after heavy rain and seen the water pooling in dips, concaves, or cracks in the rails, right where they are most rotten. I always thought having some taper-off would have extended the life of those boards by many years. I'd probably even do it (in my own OCD way) to the curb you poured. Have the formwork on one side just a hair higher (say, 1/8 of an inch?) than the other so that water runs off.

Great series on the fence! Would love to see a little short clip on the final costs. The only thing I might have done different would be something different with the rebar in the curb part. Wasn't crazy about rebar ends touching the ground to hold up the mesh. Might have cut some PVC stubs instead. The great thing is that you can see the hard work you put into it. Awesome job with the fence and the videography.

GREAT JOB ! Stumbled upon your fence project video, watched them all. LOL, watching you with ALL that OVERKILL........reminds me of myself. Did our fence 25+ years ago. Not with all THAT overkill but some. Home D. bought sections but still standing. Friends and family we know had fences put in, are long down and gone. Ours is still standing, all pickets still intact. Sometimes overkill pays. Been thinking about redoing the fence. Was thinking about something like you came up with. Only thing being here in the NYC area the curb between the fence posts would have to be below the frost line to make it "bullet proof" overkill. Just trying to justify that, being that the old fence is still standing almost 30 years, don't think I got another 30 years, LOL. Really nice fence you got there, weedwacker friendly and still pleasant to look at. Your videos are easy watching. Going to keep checking in. If you ever finish fencing off the rest of the yard would be interested to see the final look. Thank you.

Great work, really came out nice. Tarring the entire 4x4 post would give you much greater piece of mind, especially the top of the posts (that's where the water is wicked in from and rot begins ). Been building fences for 35+ years, so I'm just telling you what I run across all the time. You do fine work, but to replace a 4x4 post with that cement footer will be very timely. At least tar the tops of the posts
@dl6317
@dl6317 10 ай бұрын
I was actually thinking the same thing, not just about the posts, but even the pickets. I am thinking that the HOA would have a problem with any black tar showing on the posts etc... Perhaps a clear sealant that can be redone every 5 or 10 years just to eliminate the wicking issue. Also, does it matter that wind can't make it's way through? I think of tornadoes in those areas. Lastly, I love the cement posts but if they do get bent by mother nature, utility truck, etc...are the impossible to replace?

I am in Nevada and that reality is why I insist on using the more expensive Redwood in 3/4” thickness. The large pores in the redwood make expansion during the wet season a consideration one must account for with spacing but unlike cedar pickets or other similar whitewood pickets the redwoods also drain exceptionally well and resist contorting in summer.

Super nice. Nothing like taking time if you have it to dial everything in so well. On the nail line instead of a chalk line you could have strung a line top and bottom, slid the slats behind them and strung another line for the middle after the top and bottom were nailed. That would have been overkill though your line was good on it's own.

Built fences professionally for over 5 years. Overall I'd give it an 8 out of 10. I know it sounds low, but there was one big mistake that I think you're going to regret. Pressure treated lumber sucks. It is excessively warping prone. It's no surprise that some of the post are crooked already; I'm sure more will follow. My post of choice is Master Halco Postmaster. It's a metal post made for wood fences. If the HOA won't allow that I'd go with cedar; its naturally better at handling the elements.

I built my own fence around my house. I did it the traditional way. Except I used deck screws. The fence has been up now almost four years. It has its own issues. I had all my post in perfect alignment but a couple of them leaned somehow. I wish I knew what happened. But my neighbors said it is over kill using screws. Well since then several have hired professionals to build their fences and they have started to fall down. We are I a windy area prone to heavy storms. My fence has needed no repairs from Mother Nature. I did have to trim the bottom of my gate recently as the ground growth has become so thick that it began to drag. After the trimming of the gate it swings a much better. Very nice fence work though. I have a great feeling your fence will out last many fences. I’m sure it will outlast mine.

It looks great, but I think I would've used galvanized fence posts to protect from the slight bowing issue you had on the one end. But that fence is fantastic!!

You should use a laser lvl to get your nails lined up and you would not have to worry about a chalk line being left on it.

Nobody is feeling bad. The title should be changed, this isn't a fence, it's a permanent wall, and way overkill in an HOA residential setting.

Great job. Did your neighbor compensate you for any of your materials or labor ?

Neighbors never do, as the fence is considered yours, so the care & maintenance is yours too... unless you're lucky enough to get a neighbor who's interested in splitting costs bc they need a fence too, which hardly happens, bc as soon as you mention you want a fence, they're like, "nah man,

@@leahrowe847 I think “never” is a stretch. It may be owned by one person but it’s a shared boundary, especially in a sub division. But I would agree, in most cases they aren’t interested in a new fence unless it’s their idea
@leahrowe847
@leahrowe847 Жыл бұрын
@gtowncasey111 it's kind of a shared boundary, but a fence is never built on the exact boundary, rather its on one person's side or the other; usually the person who owns the fence places it on their side. Crazy thing about fences, if they're put in the wrong spot, not disputed, & left standing for a certain number of yrs, they can change boundary lines, & a person can actually lose a section of their property in most states... little known fact!
