That looked like such a realistic shooting scene. It captures the reality of it so well. In real life a firing squad ain’t pretty. When a person is shot they slump and fall to the ground, lights out, that’s it.

What most movies and even WWII footage don’t often capture is that death is not always immediate - imagine being stabbed by a rapier but very fast - some hitting vital organs and others not. It’s the initial shock which causes the initial loss of balance control - compounded by the fact you KNOW what is happening to you and the brain is doing EVERYTHING it can to survive - which includes the shut down of any organ function it thinks it doesn’t think is a priority - while also stuffing through waves of pain, internal bleeding, and/or drowning on blood. The coup de grâce was meant to end the suffering if the initial volley failed It is noticeable that in comparison to other Allies and enemies during WWII, American firing squads did not do the coup de grâce.

The disgustingly sad part of history is that most of the men who actually committed war crimes and mass executions like what the Soviets did at the katyn forest massacre during WW2 or the Babi Yar holocaust of bullets in Ukraine by the Nazis, never saw justice or punishment for their deeds. Most of them ditched their uniforms after the war and moved to small towns across Europe disguised as civilians and lived their lives out peacefully raising families and never paid for their crimes. You will hear stories about Nazi hunters and how after the war they tracked down a bunch of these guys but in reality they only caught a handful out of the thousands of people who actually participated in these genocidal acts.

When an SAS unit was betrayed in the Vosges Mts in late 1944 the Regt went and hunted down the SS/Gestapo responsible for the torture and Atrocities committed after the War, the SS Officer I/C was not brought to justice until 1951 as he had an important post in W/Germany,Yes he was a lawyer but it did not save him he was found dead at the stair bottom with multiple bones fractured no one heard or saw anything.

No place to hide, buddies dropping all around you, nowhere to go except TOWARDS the unseen enemy. Amazing ANY boy... and many were just that... survived.

I like your scenario better mate but sadly no one came to save the poor Norwegian men who faced the firing squad, but they were brave to the end. Certainly in the rest of the movie some German soldiers are killed in the fighting and perhaps some of these men were there. But to be fair if you are ordered to take part in a firing squad you can't really say no, horrible or not. It's a very good movie this and it doesn't overdo the action scenes so is much more realistic. There will be more soon, so keep viewing!

Here's the bottom line. These men executed were civilians illegally conducting war. A uniformed soldier is at a disadvantage if he can't tell who is and who isn't a combatant. These so-called partisans were outside the rules of war. They made the choice and paid the ultimate penalty.

Not quite. The young one on the left was picked at random off the street and his father was a Norwegian Nazi. His mother pleaded with the Germans for him to be released and they still shot him. So it wasn't always as black-and-white as you imply. The Nazis often swept hostages from the streets and put them in front of firing squads as punishment for the actions of others.

@@foreverblueclassics Yes, that did happen. However that was a result of the partisan attacks on German soldiers. It was the few recourses that the Germans had to try to deter these attacks. With guerrilla warfare (we call it terrorist in places like Afghanistan and Iraq), it's very hard to distinquish who are guerillas and who are not. I'm reminded of the Dutch woman who lured German soldiers to their death by acting like a lover. For every action, there is a reaction.

Whilst reprisals against civilians for partisan attacks are allowed in some instances, within reason, that does not include killing innocents as revenge. It would normally be along the lines of destroying homes, belongings and/or livestock or such like. The Nazis (and the Soviets) took their revenge to whole new levels.

@@foreverblueclassics Unless a combantant wears a uniform, you simply can't tell if the civilian that you are approaching is about to kill you. That exposes soldiers to an unacceptable level of risk. Unfortunately, there aren't many remedies to this. The Germans used reprisals as a deterrent. In many cases, it did deter violence. One problem was that partisans were willing to see their own countrymen when the Germans retaliated. The partisans bear a good deal of reponsibility themselves for civilian deaths. Every captured partisan would proclaim their innocence if they could walk away free. Ironically, many Western Europeans felt that the Germans were less problematic as an occupier than the Allies. A remember, the French complaining that the Allies stole far more than the Germans and committed more rapes as well. Of course, the victor gets to write the history and those facts often are ommitted. Of course, the war in the east was much different than war in the west.
